915369 tn?1355314810 I've been questioning my diagnosis for the past couple of months so I figured I'd ask on this forum and see what a doctor thinks about it. I was seeing a psychiatrist for a few years but she stopped seeing me after diagnosing me with borderline personality disorder. She also diagnosed me with dysthymia, social anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive features.
202665 tn?1248806733 I don't personally believe in one disorder transforming into an entirely different disorder, but that's just me. The diagnosis could've just been incorrect to start with and as the others said, bipolar disorder can have psychotic features and you could develop schizophrenia symptoms down the road alongside the bipolar disorder, but that would be schizoaffective disorder.
Avatar f tn When I went to see a new psychologist for therapy, she made a point of doing her own evaluation to make sure the diagnosis was correct and again diagnosed me with bipolar disorder. So I am 3 for 3. I think it is a good sign when doctors do not blindly follow the diagnosis of someone else and try to better understand the patient. I think you found a winner - good luck!
1351968 tn?1278205300 One more thing, the two disorders can kind of be put together for one diagnosis. If the person has the symptoms of bipolar disorder but they have the disconects from reality of a person with schizophrenia then they can be diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.
Avatar n tn There are different types of bipolar and as research has noted (and has occurred in my family as an example, my mom has cyclothymia which is mild bipolar, I have schizoaffective disorder) the spectrum from bipolar to bipolar with psychotic features to schizoaffective is continuous. What is happening with him may be different and more severe but you could ask the psychiatrist for the specifics. This would have some helpful information that you could discuss with the psychiatrist: http://www.
Avatar m tn Yeah so I was wondering, if my diagnosis, which seems to change constantly because apparently I'm like a square peg trying to fit in a round hole, changes from schizophrenia to bipolar disorder, will they potentially mess with my medication regimen and get rid of my antipsychotic in favor of a mood stabilizer?
Avatar f tn t say I know what specifically causes it in the brain (nor can ANYONE or it would be CURED), but I do know how it is classified and I also know the unfortunate kind of misdiagnosing that goes on with unskilled psychiatrists and doctors whom have never seen this illness before. Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder because reality testing is lost, however, reality testing remains during DP/DR episodes.
Avatar n tn I am scared to be in that mental state again. When i went to emergency they kept me for 22 days and the diagnosis was psychotic depression. I was taking effexor and zoloft but six months after i was hospitalized out of nowhere i started having visions of me dying, I would hide the knives, and other horrible visions crossed my mind. but I would not harm myself and was crying everytime i saw my children's pictures, a sense of guilt but i could not control the sadness that enveloped me.
Avatar f tn Before my current recovery I had full blown mania and also had psychotic episodes (which need not go with it, I have schizoaffective disorder but there is also bioplar with psychotic features where psychosis only occurs during mood changes, in schizoaffective disorder its all the time). Things were disturbing and extreme and I needed medication as soon as I had my first psychotic break.
1256303 tn?1291752568 My second question is how do I (and of course, my psychiatrist) differentiate between whether I am bipolar with psychotic features or schizo-affective? I definitely have the cycles of mania and depression, starting about three years ago, would have auditory and visual hallucinations when severely depressed. Recently with this batch of mania, I have begun to have the auditory hallucinations too, as well as visual. I also am having some problems with disorganized thoughts and speech and delusions.
Avatar m tn What is your exact diagnosis? Olanzapine is also known as Zyprexa which is an antipsychotic. Mitrapazine is Remeron which is an anti-depressent. I would doubt an antipsychotic would be given for anxiety. So although you are on two anti-anxiety agents (Etazolam and Xanax which is the brand name for Alprazolam) you have another diagnosis, I would assume and another set of issues to deal with.
Avatar n tn Actually if bipolar disorder has psychotic features, the person in question can hear voices from what I know. I also even knew someone with psychotic major depression who heard voices.
Avatar n tn Regardless if a person has thoughts or ideas that show a strong departure from reality or reality testing that is generally considered psychotic. Mania and depression are easier to explain. If a person only has psychotic thoughts during moodswings that is generally classified as bipolar with psychotic features. That is of course treatable. See a psychiatrist you trust more and ask them why they see what they are diagnosing in you and how it can be treated.
Avatar f tn I know because that was me for five years I was diagnosed with it as a form of bi-polar disorder. I have been off all anti-psychotic meds now since 1997 and take nothing but something for insomnia and am sober as well. But besides multiple medications related to bipolar disease I was on Thorazine for the hallucinations from 1991 through 1996. It is not BOTH. Schizophrenia doesn't just appear one day. here is some information: https://www.mind.org.
933174 tn?1375792553 Keep seeing the p work, psychotic, sort gets me worried. I don't see myself as psychotic. My doctor doesn't think I'm psychotic, I think he just thinks that when I'm very depressed I can get this way. I remember calling my therapist while I was in San Diego on a nightmare vacation, where the whole time I thought I had rabies or something was terriblly wrong with me. I might add, I was also on a medication for birth control called yaz, which I think contributed to the whole thing.
918275 tn?1254068752 To put it simply ive known people who have been bipolar but misdiagnosed as a range of similar and only similar at a bit of a stretch such as borderline personality disorder, dissociative personality disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, unipolar depression, schizophrenia, autism, attention deficeit hyperactivity disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and many many more...
Avatar f tn It could also take some time to find the medication which is right for her because not every medication works the same and as effectively for every single person but chances are that one of them will work for her eventually. It could be bipolar disorder with psychotic features like ILADVOCATE said or some psychotic disorder since 120 conditions can have psychosis as a symptom.
Avatar n tn She is 20 years old and in college. Today she told me she felt like she was having a psychotic breakdown. What is this kind of breakdown?
12268405 tn?1427853361 On April 2nd I made the decision to admit myself to a psychiatric hospital due to a psychotic episode. The thing that I'm having the hardest time comprehending is if I induced the episode or not. I convinced myself that I was covered in fleas, I heard voices saying my name and calling me worthless in the past, & I experienced paranoia. I don't know what to think right now. I wish I could know if I made the symptoms worse or not...
Avatar f tn If he was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder then his diagnosis has been changed from bipolar disorder with psychotic features. The only real difference between these two is in schizoaffective disorder the psychosis happens all the time regardless of mood and in BP with psychotic features it happens with mood episodes. Anyway, he could be living in a fantasy world and truly believing all of this.
