Common Questions and Answers about Psychotic disorder behavior

psychotic

Avatar n tn A person from my family went undiagnosed for many years despite strange behavior, only when she had a psychotic episode did she allow us to take her to a doctor and was diagnosed with paranoid disorder. The symptoms fit her "usual" symptoms (i.e. those she's had for years) - relatively coherent delusions of being disliked, plotted against, of her flat being bugged, someone stealing things when she's out.
Avatar f tn They can be primary psychiatric diagnoses, such as schizophrenia, or they may be associated with another neurological disorder such as a movement disorder like that seen in Huntington’s disease. Furthermore, psychotic episodes may be an acute change like that seen in delirium, stroke, or seizure. Depending on the complete history, including family history, associated symptoms, and clinical examination, imaging findings will likely be in different anatomical locations.
Avatar n tn How long does this psychotic behavior last? And is the psychotic behavior as a result of withdrawal. I have been using Cranberry Juice to flush it out of my son's system. He is not bipolar for he does not get sad. Bipolars get sad, not angry. My son never gets sad. He gets psychotic from good mood to psychotic mood in a split second within a conversation. I, the mother, is always on eggshells with him.
Avatar f tn I have only had psychotic episodes once and that was after being in a manic state for more than a week. I definatly have "trigger" words but I have no idea what they are because we don't remember psychotic episodes. My sons "trigger" words are "I'm going to call your parents." He throws things including his desk and he is only in first grade. His teacher keeps triggering him even though I've told her not to say it and to just do it.
Avatar n tn Regardless if a person has thoughts or ideas that show a strong departure from reality or reality testing that is generally considered psychotic. Mania and depression are easier to explain. If a person only has psychotic thoughts during moodswings that is generally classified as bipolar with psychotic features. That is of course treatable. See a psychiatrist you trust more and ask them why they see what they are diagnosing in you and how it can be treated.
12268405 tn?1427853361 On April 2nd I made the decision to admit myself to a psychiatric hospital due to a psychotic episode. The thing that I'm having the hardest time comprehending is if I induced the episode or not. I convinced myself that I was covered in fleas, I heard voices saying my name and calling me worthless in the past, & I experienced paranoia. I don't know what to think right now. I wish I could know if I made the symptoms worse or not...
Avatar n tn Yes from what you describe he probably does have ocd but compulsive lying to the point where a person believes it themselves is much more than that. It can be part of a personality disorder and is potentially psychotic. Someone can have ocd as well. If he has a family history of depression and bipolar he could have that. Only a psychiatrist can make a diagnosis.
Avatar f tn Could be manic but part of it sounds psychotic as well. There must have been a reason he did this and one doesn't know if he was reacting to some form of psychotic thought or command hallucination in addition to being manic (or more likely an agitated mixed state where a person can have the speeded up quality of mania but the anger of depression).
Avatar f tn My question is what is the difference between Bipolar disorder with psychotic features and Schizoaffective disorder? And which one sounds closest to what i am experiencing, if it's possible to answer?
2699259 tn?1344210945 My mother has Bipolar 1 with psychotic features, dx at the age of 48, now 66 yrs old. I believe she has struggled with it her whole life, I know I can remember her having psychotic episodes when I was as young as 5-6 years of age. I learned to hide her behavior very well, but I'm glad she finally got her dx when I was in my teens, it's still a challenge very single day for the both of us (and also for my family), it's like I am the parent and she is the child.
Avatar n tn Schizoaffective disorder is schizophrenia which a co-existing mood disorder which in my case is bipolar disorder. However, the American Psychiatric Association is considering a new criteria which is "schizo-obsessive disorder" and regardless obessive behavior can occur in schizophrenia so it has aspects of both.
1351968 tn?1278205300 Well there is a gradation between bipolar and schizophrenia such as bipolar with psychotic features (where a person experiences psychotic symptoms specifically during moodswings) and schizoaffective disorder, as was mentioned as I have where if untreated a person experiences psychotic symptoms at all times. Bipolar in some people can worsen over a life time, certainly if untreated and there are many subtypes of bipolar, including bipolar with psychotic features.
1201916 tn?1277603095 It works better than Geodon did for me but I take it for a psychotic disorder rather than a mood disorder but bipolar disorder can have psychotic symptoms and every medicine works differently for each person.
Avatar n tn That medication was likely prescribed to address the volatile behavior, not to address the seizure disorder. If his behavior is not under good control you can expect ongoing problems, and the fact that you are continuing to witness serious difficulties invites further evaluation. I assume he is under the care of a child psychiatrist (in addition to the pediatric neurologist). If not, he should be.
Avatar n tn My son has PANDAS and tics and compulsions and ADHD. We have been dealing with his symptoms for five years. How do you find a Dr. who understand and can help you deal with this horrible disease? I don't know how to deal with these repetitive behaviors he gets after illness or being around strep. This fall he has been exposed to strep and he is now doing toe curling tics and finger cracking over and over. It is going on six weeks since they started.
Avatar f tn more information is needed in order to do that. But the information you describe tends to indicate pretty serious emotional disorder. It is very unusual for a child so young to be prescribed such mood stabilizing, anti-psychotic and anti-hypertensive medications. Such medications are consistent with a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder or Pervasive Developmental Disorder.
Avatar f tn Firstly i think she needs to see a doctor, they will be able to help with diagnoses and treatment as well the threatening behavior. That kind of behavior is not ok. Will she see a doctor if you your parents suggest it? If you get her to see a local doctor and then they might refer her to a psychiatrist and psychologist. Secondly if she will not go i strongly suggest you tell a doctor/ or the police about this behavior as i want you to be safe. Do you live at home with a parent?
603015 tn?1329862973 Hypomania is distinguished from mania by the absence of psychotic symptoms. In other words if there are psychotic features its mania. BP2's can get psychotic features in mania the same as anyone does. Is this what you are referring to on the Black Dog Site ?
Avatar f tn 14 years old is indeed young but it might be psychotic episodes or something somehow leading to bi-polarity as it could be and it is very likely, that is is schizo but at this age who knows if she's just shizotypal or schizoid, well you wanna know if it's a personality disorder or a psychotic disorder. In females real psychotic disorders tend to appear later than in men, who are starting to get symptoms between adolescence and early adulthood.
Avatar f tn Does not occur exclusively during the course of schizophrenia, a bipolar disorder or a depressive disorder with psychotic features, or another psychotic disorder and is not attributable to the physiological effects of another medical condition.
Avatar n tn A friend of mine that I've known for 15 years now has been acting a little strange lately. On Tuesday 5/20 she called me late & told me she was on her way to my house b/c she was leaving her husband of 8 years. She said she needed a place to stay til Friday. She did not tell her sister parents what she was doing. Her husband told them on Thurs. 5/22. The next day, Friday, her family tried to sit her down & talk to her about what she was doing. She punched her sister in the face.
