1351968 tn?1278205300 Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but what is the difference between Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia? I've been told by doctors that there are many similarities, and that sometimes Bipolar can even become Schizophrenia over time, if its not treated properly. Is this true?
Avatar f tn Dont know - i went nearly 15 years not on meds and i thought i was fine until I wasnt and went psychotic manic, so you might be fine for a long time as well. And I wasnt fine, I was hypomanic and looking back had at least 3 mini breakdowns and burnouts in that time.
1546631 tn?1321643204 ll start with our story, my 8yo little boy has current diagnoses of psychotic disorder NOS, mood disorder NOS, and ADHD, combined type. We are pending diagnoses of Schizoaffective disorder, Bipolar disorder with psychosis. It's been a rough road, and still is. His meds are constantly being changed, and we just had another hospitalization. I have hope for the future, and believe we can all find support here. What is your story?
12268405 tn?1427853361 I did take short term antipsychotics at first, when I was simply diagnosed as depressed with psychotic episodes. Low dose and only for a few months, which were started and removed at the discretion of my psychiatrist, depending on how I was doing. I think the key word in your description is convincing yourself that you are being covered with fleas. It could be delusional thinking and it could be a symptom of extreme anxiety.
Avatar m tn Mental disorders that are in the psychosis category include bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Anxiety and common clinical depression are both in the neurosis category, meaning they are stress- and nerve-related and not caused by a severe underlying mental disorder.
Avatar n tn You really honestly need to look after yourself - if he is making the statements you say and talking about violence and taking seroquel and drinking then you have a serious problem. Yes its hard but if it was me I would commit him so at least he can get a proper assessment and you can feel safe - if I was him I would want that as well.
Avatar m tn The biggest loser is my son he has seen neglected by her and has seen her violence and he is starting to mimic her. As of Dec 13 our lease is up and I am moving out with my son. Her family probably will not take her back and I feel bad but I can not take anymore of her violence towards me and my son. I do feel guilty that I am leaving her with very little but I have tried and feel that I got to take my sons health as my most important issue.
Avatar f tn My question is what is the difference between Bipolar disorder with psychotic features and Schizoaffective disorder? And which one sounds closest to what i am experiencing, if it's possible to answer?

5051252 tn?1362970368 I wouldnt call this a "psychotic" episode by no means. I wouldnt use that term loosely. Nobody wants to be labeled psychotic by no means. From what my Dr. has told me, this can VERY WELL be a sign/symptom of anxiety. It can be a very uneasy feeling. I have felt like I was falling through the floor before. That doesnt mean I'm psychotic or having a psychotic episode. However, it could indicate a chemical imbalance or something. Go see a Dr.
Avatar f tn Anger can be a manifistation of depression but is usually considered more to the manic end of the spectrum. When you are depressed you may be angry but you likely lack the energy to do anything about it. He could just be angry about being sick and taking it out on the nearest person. Rage also produces feel good endorphines and can be a way of self medicating. It can become a form of addiction. She needs to encourage him to go see his psychiatrist.
603015 tn?1329862973 Bipolar Disorder II is generally viewed as less severe, with no psychotic experiences, and with episodes tending to last only hours to a few days, but longitudinal studies suggest impairment is often as severe as in Bipolar I Disorder." Note the word 'generally' because thats the clue - the information they are giving is very basic here and its not conculsive. There are Type2's here who have experienced psychotic features - i have experienced them myself.
Avatar f tn Thank you both for your thoughts. I do realize mental illness is a real illness. And if I thought that was the answer I'd go for it. I WANT to be me again. Avatar f tn I now know I always had behavior that was unusual and somewhat abnormal since I was a child, first started having psychotic thoughts when I was 13 and then at the age of 18 had a full psychotic break. I never really felt like myself until I started that treatment in clinical study but once I did could look back and see that I always had behavior patterns and obsessions that were markedly abnormal.
Avatar m tn They do not know what is real and what is not. They often suffer visual and auditory hallucinations and delusions, either of grandeur or paranoia. Psychosis can be dangerous, not only to the person experiencing it, but to those around them. They are completely different things. A panic attack is a form of anxiety, whereas a psychotic break is an acute psychotic episode, completely unrelated to anxiety.
Avatar f tn even if he really feels that you have a Somatization disorder he has no right to treat anyone like that. How unprofessional is that???? That disorder is a real disorder and nothing to just rub off...and he should know better. I'm not saying that is what you have...you know your own body and how you have been feeling for many years. I know mine and I'm still not Dxs...but I know that something is wrong with me...as you know something is wrong with you...
Avatar f tn They can be primary psychiatric diagnoses, such as schizophrenia, or they may be associated with another neurological disorder such as a movement disorder like that seen in Huntington’s disease. 202665 tn?1248806733 Yes schizophrenia doesnt have any mood changes but there are a whole spectrum of conditions in between such as bipolar with psychotic features and schizoaffective disorder which involve both psychosis and mood changes. Sometimes certain concerns such as psychosis can increase over time become more apparent or are more in need of treatment.
