Avatar m tn my 22 year old son just experienced a psychotic break. I need to understand how he was feeling. Is there anyone who has personally experienced this, and would be willing to describe what you felt? I am desperate to understand what he is going through.
Avatar m tn My pdoc yesterday told me it's possible to have a psychotic break from too severe anxiety. This scares me bad, what is that? Does that mean I'll go crazy and hurt someone? Myself? Has anyone ever had one of these? Also is there anyone here that has had several months of severe anxiety, then slowly goes back to several months of calm? I'm afraid this feeling will last forever. Just to make sure I'm experiencing this "anxiety" what does it feel like to u all?
Avatar f tn t until I had a psychotic break that I was diagnosed. It seems that after I was diagnosed (after my break) that I haven't gotten back to the "pre-break" feeling. (I stay in the depressed more than the mania) I know part of that is because of medications and we don't always want/need to get back to the "pre-break" feelings, but I am wondering... Does a psychotic break change our disorder to a permanently detiorated state? Does it just get worse on it's own?
Avatar f tn however, positive findings for the impact of relapse prevention treatment suggest that learning to use anticipatory coping can reduce the likelihood of having a psychiatric hospitalization and associated consequences (Herz et al., 2000). Preventive coping refers to the process by which a person builds up resources and resistance “just in case” possible stressors occur in the distant future (Schwarzer, 2001).
Avatar f tn As to your question that's complex. A manic episode is a mental change in that its a break from reality. A person's emotions are not normative to what is going on. It may impair judgement such as the grandiosity typical for mania where a person has an inflated sense of self importance. As for psychosis that is a sharp break from reality in logical and normative thinking.
447130 tn?1225470866 has recenlty been traumatized, then had a complete meltdown which the docs called a Psychotic Break? They are hospitalized for being a danger to themselves & others. I don't have much more info than that. What does this mean? Is it temporary? How long can it last & does anyone know how long you can be held by law? Or is that a state by state issue? Thanks for your help.
Avatar f tn I wouldn't worry too much about what caused it. I would focus on the treatment and if that makes things better. Sometimes there just isn't a category an experience neatly fits into.
Avatar m tn after attempting the HCV trmt interferon with Ribaviran for less than 2 wks had a psychotic break and then was but on an antidepressant. He stayed on an antidepressant for approximately 4 years then attempted the peglayted interferon with Ribaviran for less than 2 wks and again had multiple anxiety issues.......he is now dealing with type2 diabetes, liver cirrhosis and Biolar 1 issues Proceed with caution on medication.....
Avatar n tn Well, I'm not sure about that. Antipsychotics don't work right away. Tranquilizers do. Antipsychotics, if they do work, work all the time. Tranquilizes only work for a short period of time and then wear off. If she took this as an antipsychotic injection, it would be during an emergency situation but she would have to take the shots for several months and then go on the medication for longer than that.
12268405 tn?1427853361 On April 2nd I made the decision to admit myself to a psychiatric hospital due to a psychotic episode. The thing that I'm having the hardest time comprehending is if I induced the episode or not. I convinced myself that I was covered in fleas, I heard voices saying my name and calling me worthless in the past, & I experienced paranoia. I don't know what to think right now. I wish I could know if I made the symptoms worse or not...
Avatar f tn Things were disturbing and extreme and I needed medication as soon as I had my first psychotic break. My mother has cyclothymia (mild bipolar) and perhaps anxiety disorder (again onsite or off I agree only a psychiatrist can make a conclusive diagnosis, her therapist has tentatively agreed to this) and she has gone for over 65 years without medication and I am helping her approach treatment.
Avatar m tn I have BP l and have been hospitalized and committed quite a few times. My first psychotic episode occurred when I was 26, so I can relate to your daughter's situation (I'm 44). Many, many of us do "come back." She's likely to be able to return to school and/or work in her field when she's better stabilized. I did - even after being severely ill and on disability for a couple of years.

Avatar m tn ve had a constant dull pain in my head in addition to frequent and consistent migraines (classic without aura) my entire life (including childhood). I also hallucinate frequently (not due to a psychotic break or Schizophrenia etc according to a variety of psychiatrists).
Avatar n tn Occupational therapists deal with that kind of thing a lot and strategies to help. Do you work with any professionals? Does he receive any treatment? Also remember, that no is a word any child can learn to understand. And smelling bottoms of others can be a big no. Learning boundaries is important. Some kids like my son with sensory issues are very rule bound. Teach him about not crossing into other's space. This would prevent any ability to smell the butt.
1256303 tn?1291752568 My second question is how do I (and of course, my psychiatrist) differentiate between whether I am bipolar with psychotic features or schizo-affective? I definitely have the cycles of mania and depression, starting about three years ago, would have auditory and visual hallucinations when severely depressed. Recently with this batch of mania, I have begun to have the auditory hallucinations too, as well as visual. I also am having some problems with disorganized thoughts and speech and delusions.

987762 tn?1671273328 Hi and thank you in advance for your help and advice regarding understanding schizophrenia better! My daughters partner of 2 1/2 years is as far as we've been told is undx with anything other than GAD, though we were aware he'd been involuntarily admitted to a state hospital for treatment in his mid teens, he told me he wanted to get away from his controlling mother and faked a break down.
1044813 tn?1370494406 Hello all, I would like to request the addition of Seroquel (quetiapine) which is an anti-psychotic to the mood tracker. Seroquel is very commonly prescribed for the treatment of both manic and depressive episodes of bipolar disorder.
Avatar n tn I'm sure there are those on here who have a similar diagnosis, but isn't this something to ask your psychiatrist about this difference in diagnostic terminology? Also ask if it actually matters -- a lot of diagnoses in the Diagnostic Manual aren't meaningful to the patient, they are more for fitting into the patents for FDA approved drugs or getting reimbursement from insurance companies. Some are extremely meaningful, because they alter the treatment.

Avatar n tn There are numerous treatment strategies to help nystagmus patients. Like JCH mentioned these are usually best done by pediatric ophthalmologist or strabismus specialist (preferably with interest in nystagmus treatment). I know of one centre in Mumbai where nystagmus treatment is done........Utsav Eye Clinic in Kharghar Navi Mumbai or you could look for a centre nearby. Hope that helps.
