Avatar m tn my 22 year old son just experienced a psychotic break. I need to understand how he was feeling. Is there anyone who has personally experienced this, and would be willing to describe what you felt? I am desperate to understand what he is going through.
Avatar m tn My pdoc yesterday told me it's possible to have a psychotic break from too severe anxiety. This scares me bad, what is that? Does that mean I'll go crazy and hurt someone? Myself? Has anyone ever had one of these? Also is there anyone here that has had several months of severe anxiety, then slowly goes back to several months of calm? I'm afraid this feeling will last forever. Just to make sure I'm experiencing this "anxiety" what does it feel like to u all?
Avatar m tn Can anyone who has abused DXM tell me how they dealt with life after they quit? because im still dealing with the long term effects and i would like to know if anyone can relate and what theyve done to cope with it. any suggestions on my resulting mental state would be appreciated. sorry but this post is very long and thourough. i dont blame you if you dont read it. howdy. on average i took 24 pills a day to get high.
Avatar m tn i dont know anybody that used/uses dxm like me and you wrote that your an RN as well as a former abuser so i would love your dvice. im kinda lost at this point. i dont know what to do. i just got out of rehab for alcohol and oxycontin which i was in due to dwi's i went to rehab for those drugs because thats what technically showed up in my system (honestly not a problem believe it or not) since dxm wouldnt.
Avatar n tn I've got kindof a weird addiction, its a psychological addiction, but it's killing me... I'm hooked on DXM. I've got a 2 box a day coricidin habit that I'm having a hard time trying to break. It's killing my marriage, my wife doesn't trust me a bit when it comes to drugs anymore, and I really want to quit. I dont get sick when I try to go without it, I just start panicking and I stay really on edge and constantly think about it.
Avatar m tn s probably one of the most attractive things about DXM. I can think of many eventless days spent on DXM that were exciting and interesting. I suggest trying to find new hobbies to occupy the time that DXM abuse filled. There's more fulfilling things to spend your time doing then dosing up on a dangerous drug that destroys your brain cells. Just know that you're making a wise choice, and really are taking the more healthy path!
Avatar f tn t until I had a psychotic break that I was diagnosed. It seems that after I was diagnosed (after my break) that I haven't gotten back to the "pre-break" feeling. (I stay in the depressed more than the mania) I know part of that is because of medications and we don't always want/need to get back to the "pre-break" feelings, but I am wondering... Does a psychotic break change our disorder to a permanently detiorated state? Does it just get worse on it's own?
Avatar f tn I've used dxm about 10-14 times over about 4 months. (Avg. waiting time: 5-30 days). It's impossible for me to pay attention to anything, I have very bad memory, its absolutely impossible for me to retain information and I have ADD already. But I think I've added to it. Have I fried my brain? Will I be able to continue usage ever, as in every 2 months or so? Additional info: Im 15, I do not have access to ADD meds, my dxm doses are always 180-300.
7224450 tn?1389318137 Young people like yourself periodically post on here about using DXM. Long-term users always have horror stories about being unable to stop and having terrible side effects like constant hallucinations and diminished cognitive abilities. Hopefully you haven't used it long enough to feel like this yet. If you're not addicted, why not give yourself a break for a few months?
Avatar f tn My son has been abusing cough medicine. He somehow extracts the dxm with chemicals and lemon juice to make "agent lemon." This week he complained of an earache. I'm wondering if the dxm or the chemicals could have damaged his throat/eustation tubes or set him up for an infection.
Avatar f tn I have seen anecdotal evidence on the internet that dextromethorphan (dxm) can ease depression. I know it can also be abused. Has anyone heard of the depression link and what dosage this would be?
447130 tn?1225470866 has recenlty been traumatized, then had a complete meltdown which the docs called a Psychotic Break? They are hospitalized for being a danger to themselves & others. I don't have much more info than that. What does this mean? Is it temporary? How long can it last & does anyone know how long you can be held by law? Or is that a state by state issue? Thanks for your help.
397118 tn?1219762250 DXM-dextromethorphan...just like sue41 said is in cough suppressants DMT-dimethyltryptamin...

Avatar m tn Hi! I don't have any Experiance with dxm but I'm sure someone will be able to answer your question. It's good that you've decided to stop because I know it's really bad for your liver and can have really awful long term effects! Keep asking for support and I'm sure you can get through it!
Avatar m tn i have seen posts on this site about people who had permanent damage from using dxm long term. some had actual psychosis and pretty severe mental impairment that will be with them forever. it is really a dangerous drug that most people don't think twice about.
Avatar m tn Hi Devgor.. Yes I would say it is the DXM. When I was doing a lot of speed I also would hallucinate.. DXM also leaves some peps with a lot of Anxiety.. You really need to stop this for some of these symptoms can last for life It changes your brain chemistry.. You need to be honest with a trusted adult and speak openly with a Dr. You are young You do not want to feel this way all your life.. You need to get involved in support groups for young adults..
673183 tn?1232732878 Check the back of the box for ingredients. I have alot of experience with DXM, and if the back of the box has "dextromethorphan" then she is trying to trip. If it has "sudafed" listed then she is trying to speed. The DXM will over ride the sudafed if both things are listed as ingredients. She'll just get a trip with a speed effect. To overdose on DXM is ALMOST impossible, but it is possible.
Avatar n tn Your son, I am 99% sure that this is true, is abusing the nyquil for the acitve ingredient and intoxicating drug called DXM, which stands for Dextro-methorphan, used in larger than normal dosages the user feels dissaossociative, has visuals, is light-headed, and has a general "trip" feeling that last for 6 hours to 8 hours. I am 22 and I know in the last five years it's popularity even among the people in my area let alone the whole enitre country has grown emmencially.
Avatar f tn On day three the rehab center had to hospitalize him for bizarre and psychotic behavior. The rehab clinic refused to take him back because of his behavior so he is now home with me. His behavior is still very bizarre. It has been at least 5 days since he took the coricidin, and he is very distractable, anxious, irritable, cant sleep, and basically has the behavior and mentality of a 5-year old (and attention span) I am deathly afraid that he has done permanent brain damage.
1390858 tn?1279930486 Or maybe you end up like a guy we got in the regional center. He hallucinated from taking DXM and killed his best friend. He is doing life in a forensics unit in a psyche ward. Kid was only 18. Sound good? Now go see your doctor. You can do this. Were behind you. GOD bless.
Avatar f tn Iv read that DXM can be addictive which is in most cough syrups, but you'd have to take alot of it frequently in order to get addicted. Furthermore, from my understanding an addiction to DXM is pretty obviouse to observers because the resulting behavior is pretty bizzare. Speaking of which, the show Intervention had a young boy addicted to DXM on it a couple of weeks ago.....
Avatar f tn As to your question that's complex. A manic episode is a mental change in that its a break from reality. A person's emotions are not normative to what is going on. It may impair judgement such as the grandiosity typical for mania where a person has an inflated sense of self importance. As for psychosis that is a sharp break from reality in logical and normative thinking.
Avatar m tn 1-You sons need to want to be clean more than anything 2-Traditional Talk Therapy (Psychologist/psychiatrist) preferrably the latter 3-Pharmacotherapy to treat underlying psych issues 4-possible medical management (Inpatient) 5-Some structured recovery support (AA/NA/Halfway house) The DXM that your son is ingesting is not helping his original medical problems in any sense. DXM abuse long term causes some nasty side effects.
