654560 tn?1331854581 My question is can you have both Bi-Polar and Affective Disorder I currently take 900mg..of Lithium Clolzapan 0.5mg.3x daily and 100mg.of Seroquil at night. In looking at some lit. I display 95 % of the symptoms. of Affective Disorder. What will this mean for my recovery. 1256303 tn?1291752568 My second question is how do I (and of course, my psychiatrist) differentiate between whether I am bipolar with psychotic features or schizo-affective? I definitely have the cycles of mania and depression, starting about three years ago, would have auditory and visual hallucinations when severely depressed. Recently with this batch of mania, I have begun to have the auditory hallucinations too, as well as visual. I also am having some problems with disorganized thoughts and speech and delusions.
202665 tn?1248806733 I have been a psych patient for 13 years and I'm 32. When I was 19, the pdoc thought I had postnatal psychosis, then about a year later they thought I could have schizoaffective disorder. I only know this now because my current pdoc told me, at the time when my family pressed for a diagnosis they were told I had "affective disorder with psychotic features". I strongly believe that our symptoms evolve over the years as our lives change, we learn coping skills etc.
Avatar m tn my doctors arde confused between bipolar disorder and schizo affective disorder....i hope i get cured soon....by the way, is there something by means of which i can wean myself off totally from these psychiatric meds bcoz i m totally fed up....thanks again.
Avatar n tn There are a variety of neurotransmitters involved. Its complex. However, as for psychosis, the thinking up until now was that the brain of people with schizophrenia was overactive in the area of dopamine receptors. All antipsychotics work by lowering the amount of dopamine. However, lowering dopamine, creates a condition clinically similar to Parkinsons' known as tardive dyskinesia which I have in severe form. That doesn't mean people shouldn't take treatment.
Avatar n tn 33%), an approximately equal frequency of unipolar depressive disorder (45% vs. 57%) and a higher frequency of affective temperaments (45% vs. 22%). The migraine patients also had a greater number of anxiety disorders (3.0 vs. 1.9) and a higher frequency of panic disorder and agoraphobia.” Source:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12587198?ordinalpos=2&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.
Avatar f tn I herd about this thing called Seasonal Affective Disorder, and since I thought I fit most of the symptoms I asked my Mom about it (since she is a nurse who minored in psychology), but she thought I was just being a hypochondriac. She could be right, but now that it's fall I'm becoming seriously depressed again and It's becoming harder and harder to focus on school. I have never been tested or diagnosed with any mental or mood disorder.
Avatar f tn Early onset is generally considered to be anything under the age of 25 and it appears that the earlier the age of onset, the more likely there is a significant family history of Bipolar Disorder. Early onset Bipolar Disorder typically begins with depression and there may be many depressive episodes before an individual experiences a hypomanic or manic episode.
918457 tn?1244645682 I have observed many differences from people without ADHD and myself. These differences can help you understand if you are struggling with the disorder or just loose focus sometimes. First off, the most significant sign of ADHD, in me anyways, is caffiene. I drink caffiene to go to sleep. It in no way gives me energy of any sort. This symptom has been described by people with ADHD a thousand times over.
1305767 tn?1361192676 My SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder, only goes away in May when the sun is shining more and I am outside more... Here is some info from a Medical Site... Seasonal affective disorder (also called SAD) is a type of depression that occurs at the same time every year. If you're like most people with seasonal affective disorder, your symptoms start in the fall and may continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody.
1707167 tn?1307807539 I have had 3 docs in 14 years, the first one diagnosed me Schizophrenic then quickly changed it to Mood disorder with affective features, the 2nd doctor said Bipolar and now the 3rd says Bipolar but he just kind of carried on where the 2nd doc left things. Bearing in mind the 1st doc was a woman and she was my doc for 10 years, she knew me quite well, but I could manipulate her quite a lot!
720657 tn?1233011567 As the name implies, it is characterized by a combination of symptoms of schizophrenia and an affective (mood) disorder. There has been a controversy about whether schizoaffective disorder is a type of schizophrenia or a type of mood disorder. Today, most clinicians and researchers agree that it is primarily a form of schizophrenia. Although its exact prevalence is not clear, it may range from two to five in a thousand people (- i.e., 0.2% to 0.5%).
Avatar f tn Bright-light therapy (BLT) for seasonal affective disorder is used at an intensity of 10,000 lux for 30-90 minutes daily, usually within 1 hour of arising in the morning. Like any effective antidepressant, BLT has the potential to precipitate a hypomanic or manic episode in susceptible individuals. Other common adverse effects include eye irritation, restlessness, and transient headaches. These lamps are not a significant source of ultraviolet (UV) light.
12268405 tn?1427853361 On April 2nd I made the decision to admit myself to a psychiatric hospital due to a psychotic episode. The thing that I'm having the hardest time comprehending is if I induced the episode or not. I convinced myself that I was covered in fleas, I heard voices saying my name and calling me worthless in the past, & I experienced paranoia. I don't know what to think right now. I wish I could know if I made the symptoms worse or not...
480448 tn?1426948538 re like most people with seasonal affective disorder, your symptoms start in the fall and may continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody." Some people ONLY experience depressive symptoms at certain times of the year, while others have SAD as a concurrent diagnosis, along with clinical depression. Even if you haven't been diagnosed as having SAD, I bet most of you will say that your moods and symptoms of depression worsen in the winter months.
Avatar f tn Sounds like classical Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This is a mood disorder when depressive symptoms begin in winter and fade when spring rolls around. Light therapy during winter seems to work well for a lot of people. I would do some reasearch and see a professional counselor/psychologist who will be able to help with treatment options.
647754 tn?1270036911 htm It seems there is a great overlap in symptoms. But in diagnosis the primary difference is that one is an axis I affective disorder and the other is an axis II personality disorder. Is the axis I versus axis II distinction arbitrary?
Avatar m tn Hi- My son was diagnosed with Bi-Polar 1 with Schizo Affective Disorder starting at age 19. He is now 27. There are genetic components from both families, and he used lots of street drugs in high school and college which he seems to think helped trigger his first psychotic break. Long story short, many hospitalizations, much family work, many doctors, many different drugs, a marriage, two children, many jobs, a divorce. Some stable times.
3058980 tn?1340515938 When a person is experiencing auditory hallucinations and psychotic thoughts generally an antipsychotic is what is prescribed to treat it. You can discuss all these concerns with his psychiatrist who can adjust or change his medication as needed which it appears they are doing.
Avatar f tn I posted a question about my son's changing symptoms recently, but I still have questions. My son's current diagnosis is schizo-affective disorder and bipolar disorder. Here is the problem we are having now. He has been telling outlandish and completely untrue stories to everyone, except us at home. He doesn't talk to anyone at home at all...just very perfunctory day to day chit chat...that's all we get.
Avatar f tn My question is what is the difference between Bipolar disorder with psychotic features and Schizoaffective disorder? And which one sounds closest to what i am experiencing, if it's possible to answer?
1351968 tn?1278205300 Well there is a gradation between bipolar and schizophrenia such as bipolar with psychotic features (where a person experiences psychotic symptoms specifically during moodswings) and schizoaffective disorder, as was mentioned as I have where if untreated a person experiences psychotic symptoms at all times. Bipolar in some people can worsen over a life time, certainly if untreated and there are many subtypes of bipolar, including bipolar with psychotic features.
