I personally do not agree with giving these kinds of meds to children who are so young. Often times, the meds work in opposite ways in young children, sometimes making the issues worse. What other methods have you used to help treat his issues? Obviously therapy...what kind of therapy, and how long did he go to sessions? Have you tried any kind of behavioral modification techniques (if there are behavioral issues)? Is his school involved? What kind of evaluations has he had?
I just did a quick overview on Prozac and children, and found a portion of a letter that you might want to read. Dr. Loren Mosher, who also is a highly respected psychiatrist has also worked as an advocate for mental health patients. He is part of the group that this letter originates from.

OCD is a serious anxiety disorder and one of the more difficult to treat. Liquid Prozac (an SSRI) would not be unheard of to treat a child as young as your grandson. However, if the parents are uncomfortable with this method of treatment, I might suggest that they request a referral to a medical specialist with experience in anxiety disorders as a child psychiatrist or a child neurologist. By the way, pulling out one's hair is called Trichotillomania - another anxiety disorder.
I have a 13 yo son diagnosed with general anxiety disorder, mild depression, and OCD. He was put on prozac 1 1/2 years ago, starting at 10 mg. It helped a little, so eventually it was increased to 20 mg. In January, it was increased to 30 mg, but it seemed like the anxiety fears were more on the upswing, and the OCD wasn't as much under control.
He also had a lot of health issues going on that same year, and we believe the prozac was tangled up and at least increasing his stomach pain.
What else was tried? These meds are pretty hard to take for adults, but for young children with still undeveloped brains, they were never approved for use. Now, it's perfectly legal to use them, and for some, it's the only thing that works, but that's why I'm asking, what else did you try first? It should have been everything you can think of.
states that Prozac may increase suicidal ideation in children and young adults, but there is no mention of that occurring in the the elderly.
Clonidine is not normally prescribed to treat depression. It is primarily used to control blood pressure. It has a number of other uses.

About 8weeks ago Idecided to taper off Cymbalta as have felt that the medication seems to worsen my symptoms as well as making me extremely tired - I could sleep up to 16hrs a day which is not good with 2 young children. I have been referred to a Phsyciatrist and he has prescribed me with Prozac starting with 20mg and working up to 40mg, but dilemma is whether to take them or not.
Wow! I have to say how nice it is to know you are not a freak and that other people have this horrible problem. I can go back as far as 7 years of age and remember having anxiety, It's so sad to think a child would have to deal with such a thing. I now take Lexapro and feel alot better. Not 100% but I guess as good as it's gonna get for me. I recently noticed alot of anxiety signs in my 9 year old daughter. It's apparently something you can pass on to your children.
We met with a child psychiatrist and gave us the diagnosis but also said she had OCD and prescribed Prozac for her(about 1/4 tsp every day). I am concerned about putting her on meds but also feel horrible for her and her tantrums have been unbearable (stemming from the obsessions) for our entire family. Is meds for this along with therapies for the other autism issues the right thing or should i think twice about putting her on meds?
Yes, the Prozac can make him hyper. Our child took Prozac at the same age as your son and she, too, did not do well on it. It did help her anxiety but seemed to take away her "filter" for saying or doing appropriate things. Our doctor then placed her on Effexor - which worked well but today she is on Celexa (citalopram is the generic term) and this seems to be the best "fit" for her.
Prozac affects different people in different ways. Unfortunately, it was the worse drug I ever took. It made me very ill. No I did not get angry, just on the move all the time. Bad runny tummy, the jitters. I ran around all day crying. could not keep still. Worse me out. I had to stop it as making me very ill indeed.
I have never heard it said that anger is depression leaving the body. Although the Prozac did not make me angry, perhaps other people may have experienced that.

I recently discovered friable, breaking asbestos pipe insulation in my basement. We are going to have air quality testing done, and have considered dust wipe testing as well. I am extremely concerned for my family's health, including very young children, and would really appreciate any help you could provide!
We stored the a/c units in the basement uncovered for at least one year, and covered for 2 additional years, using them in the summertime.
