Prozac with lithium

Common Questions and Answers about Prozac with lithium

prozac

I have only been on Lexapro for a little over a month, and although it worked very well in the beginning, it has made me very depressed and/or easily irritable since. My psychiatrist wants to put me on Lithium to try and help with the anti-anxiety pill, even though I don't have Bi-Polar disorder. My mother does not like the sound of Lithium, cause she's only seen bad things, but I don't really know anything about it, nor do I know any other medications that I might be able to take for that.
When I stopped I lost the 40kgs just like that. With the lithium I am now excericising regularly including hard work outs with kickboxing, walking and gym. I haven't lost any weight and am thinking it is mainly water retention from the lithium . I am now on 250mg of lithium and zeldox since a reduction in dec 2010 but still no weight loss. Help !!! any tips on reducing the effects of the fluid retention!
I really had no other side effects from either med. Lithium is more for mania and prozac for depression. I take a Lithium/Wellbutrin combo and it is awsome for me. Controls both sides pretty darn good! It is really trial and error with any med, it might or might not effect your libido. Just have to try and see. If it does, switch again! I know tegretol kills it too. So you might do better on Lithium or Prozac.
I read that the drug studies with celexa showed that at 20mg it barely did better than placebo, and most people step up to 40mg/day. Also, with lithium, two studies I read said the effective dose was with a serum level between 0.5and 1.0, usually .6-.75. So am I basically under-dosing two drugs, which does great for side effects but makes them sub-therapeutic (like a placebo) and am I just very sensitive to side effects? What do you think of the combination of celexa 20mg and lithium 600mg?
I've been taking Prozac for 4 years. Started at 10mg and have pretty much stayed at 10mg. I tried celexa too and it made me very anxious, so went back to Prozac. It really helped me at first with my postpartum depression. Now, I'm not sure it's doing anything although I'm afraid to see how worse I'd be without it. I have never taken lithium. I've had very little side effects, if any, with Prozac.
I checked all the drugs your mother is currently taking (fluorouracil and irinotecan in FOLFIRI regimen, morphine, prozac, prednisone) and all of these, particularly the chemotherapy drugs, do not appear to have any significant interactions with lithium. The exception is prozac, which has enhanced effects when combined with lithium. I suggest that you have your mother's lithium levels checked as soon as possible (this should be done periodically, anyway).
I will research on it a bit when I leave the forum, but I wanted to post here and ask for some support on using it with a mood stabilizer. Has anyone else had success with the combo of antidepressent/stabilizer? I am hopeful and am praying this is the answer for getting my BP under control. Thanks for listening.
I am on prozac and have been for about 6 months....This last week I have been very manic with ALOT of paranoia and anger. Could this be the prozac or would it have happened by now?
The psychopharmacologist added Lithium to the Prozac that he was already taking. He has been on this combo for almost 1 month and feels lousy everyday. Says he is "fuzzy", tired, sweaty and anxious. Spends entire days in bed which is not like him at all. Can anyone give me their personal feedback about Lithium side effects?
You need to manage any drug you take and watch the side effects and they ALL have them - Olanzapine for example has the same side effects in some cases and can be far more severe as its an anti psychotic and ironically it causes more weight gain than Lithium ever did along with issues with insulin uptake and may lead to diabetes in sensitive cases.
Before you subscribe here there was this lady, the community leader, who was on lithium and we had long correspondences about lithium trying to convince me with it. Another guy is monkeyc from australia who takes lithium he doesn't post now but you can track his posts on medhelp and he defends lithium extensively to the extent that i thought they were brothers. True lithium is the most effective of the drugs and i know people on it for 30 years.
Hi, Well i've come home with a box of lithium carbonate 400mg. Got to keep on with the depakote as well for the next 2 weeks then reduce that to 250mg. As long as the levels of lithium are ok she wants to up that to 600mg in 4-5 weeks (it'll be 5 by the time i get to see her). Completely broke down in her office, was just a wet soggy mess and she said that really there was little else left to try me on. She said she is thinking of keeping me on the lower dose depakote as well.
She has taken lithium for 30 years, plus prozac with great results and no problems with mood swings. We began noticing mania symptoms about 3 days after beginning first treatment ( Folfuri 46 hours on take home infusion pump). That was almost 3 wks ago. Had her 2nd tx 4 days ago. I mentioned mania to her oncologist who said steroids were probably to blame but due to RA she has had lots of steroids over last 9 yrs with no problems.

My doctor has mentioned Zoloft to me and said that it isn't sedating like Paxil and maybe with the help of Wellbutrin I can keep my sex drive. I've also heard that Prozac might be a good option because it isn't sedating. Can anyone give me any advise on these two medications before I call my doctor and accept one of them witch will most likely be Zoloft since that's the one that she's been leading towards.
I found if I took a benzo such as Xanax as needed only with Prozac, it was great. Prozac alone does not cut it for anxiety. I hope you feel better.
have been reading a thread about prozac poopout. I took Prozac for 9 years STARTING AT 50, I am now 60. 18 months ago I started having weird things happening. Inner tremors, some lighheaded dizziness *not severe but unsettling, extreme feeling of being shaking cold *something a menopausal woman only dreams about* I am past that * anxiety, muscle weakness, fear,. It isn't panic disorder, I don't have the pounding heart, sweatinge etc. 90% of the time it occurs at night.
I have been on Zoloft for over 7 years, at various doses, as high as 200 for several years. In the last 4 weeks, I have been at 75 mg, because I was started on Lithium. I am not on lithium anymore. I am transitioning from Zoloft to Prozac and would like if you could tell me how that transition should take place, in terms of balance, in weeks 1 and 2. My doctor has said to move to 50 of zoloft and 10 mg of prozac, week 1. 25 mg of zoloft and 10 mg, still, in week 2.
Like you i am on Wellbutrin 150 mg amd 20mg of Prozac i do well on both have been for 2 yrs now. The prozac makes me tired i tried no prozac and 1 wellbutrin in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. I had more energy but i was snapping at everyone and being hateful so went back on the prozac my Dr. said the prozac dosnt make you tired but my body says the different.
MIGHT NOT BE AS BAD HAVING A MS IN ME THIS YEAR WERS LAST YEAR I DIDNT..when i took the celexa with no lithium..it made me very manic..
I'm scared because some of the potential side effects are really bad. Do any of y'all have experience with prozac, especially paired with lithium, that you'd like to share?
prozac/buspar/lithium/blah blah blah/SS/etc., ect., etc. take good care!

obviously they feel the benefits outweigh the risks...prozac is shown to be fairly safe, klonopin isn't great to take but I think as long as you're taking it as directed by an OB you should be alright...I don't know about trazadone. Tell your OB how much this concerns you, and s/he should be willing to discuss the risks and benefits...or you can ask a pharmacist. call the pharmacist and tell them your situation...
Bipolar needs treatment with a mood stabilizer such as Lithium, Depakoate or Lamictal. Hypnosis from what I learned in a mood disorders support group is not a good idea for bipolar. OCD can respond to cognitive behavioral therapy. Talk therapy is good for anyone and you could go to a counselor for relationships and both speak about the concerns. But compulsive lying if it is that symptomatic is generally something that would require medication.
I am on so much medication. I take Lithium 100mg 3x's a day, Prozac, Xanax 1mg PRN. Up to 4x a day. I feel more depressed when I get up in the morning and it is so hard to pull out of it. I have a daymare at lease every 3-4 hours. I just started on this medication. How long does it take to start working?
used prozac, zoloft, cymbalta, and elavil at diff times over last few years....not much success so far. Still on prozac and fiddling with dosage at dr's advice. Sometimes it feels like it may be working to improve depression, but have had a lot of compulsiveness on it. Doctors. Very little success. Have not felt comfortable with them to discuss inner thoughts. Maybe more problem than theirs.
My mom is diagnosed with bipolar disorder with psychotic features. She takes lithium, risperdal, and geodon. She claims they work well for her but she also claims there is a man stalking her. She has never seen him but she hears this voice often. This particular hallucination has persisted for at least 4 years. The voice does not bother her typically when my father and myself are present; however, it does talk to her when she's alone or not actively engaged in something.
I took Paxil but only briefly so I didn't get the weight gain from it. I was dx with bipolar and switched to Lithium. Now talk about the weight! I have put on 70 lbs in 3 yrs. I'm 5'9 female and wore yes I said WORE a size 7-9 jean. *sighs* the 'ol days. I argue with my Dr. about the meds that are supposed to fix my depression causing me more everytime I have to buy larger clothes. I have switched meds and am hoping they work.
