Common Questions and Answers about Prozac vs celexa

prozac

Avatar f tn Hi i have been on prozac for it will be a month on friday , and it made me feel worse than good my anxiety seems have hit the roof thus resulting in having symptoms of depersonalization / derealization which let me tell you is scary as hell,:( so i went back to my docs today and told her how my anxiety is 10 times worse than it was as i got identified with GAD ( general anxiety disorder) which is id say harder to cope with than depression at the mo, so she suggest i switch from 20mg prozac to
Avatar m tn Celexa tends to be a better med generally for anxiety than Prozac because Prozac tends to be stimulating, though Prozac is considered an easier med to take and especially to stop taking. If you quit Celexa cold turkey and just switched to Prozac, you could be suffering from withdrawal, or it cold be side effects of Prozac, or it could be the problem I mentioned, that Prozac tends not to work as well when anxiety is the main problem, though for some it works fine. Lots to consider.
492898 tn?1222243598 I have heard many bc patients mention that they were switched from Prozac to Celexa when they were taking Prozac and started on Tamoxifen.
1352638 tn?1277025232 Everyone's system is different, so hard to say if one 20mg tablet of prozac could be responsible for the panic attacks you had at night. Not knowing your history or why doctor is treating you, it is difficult to respond with clarity. I don't know what citalopram is. An anti anxiety med? If anxiety is the prominent symptom in your depression, there are other more suitable antidepressants. Talk to your doctor about this.
Avatar f tn ADs and BP disorder are always an interesting conundrum. I know that there have been extensive studies regarding a Zyprexa/Prozac combination for BP disorder. Those studies have shown to be effective. If you and your pdoc are thinking about going with Prozac, I would probably look into using it with Zyprexa. The ADs can be hit or miss, especially with BP folks. I know that I (along with many BP friends) have had serious issues with all of the ADs.
Avatar n tn I have been taking prozac 20mg for 2 weeks. I want to start back on celexa of 80mg which I was on for 10 years. Can I stop cold turkey on prozac and how do I start back on celexa?
Avatar n tn There can be side effects with SSRIs like Celexa and Prozac. When I was on Zoloft, my sex drive definitely went down, however, this is not the case with everyone. Just because you experienced side effects with Prozac does not mean they will be the same with Celexa. Just remember, that there is typically an 'adjustment period' whenever you start, stop, or adjust dosages with these medications, so being patient is someitmes warranted in my opinion....
446896 tn?1237802742 I think I am ready to try medication for my anxiety for the first time in my life. Right now I have two choices...Celexa or Prozac. My doctor prescribed Celexa, but gave me the choice of which SSRI I would like to try (since they are all similar). I am wondering if Prozac would be a better choice for me though, because my 16 yr old. cousin (daughter of my mother's identical twin sis) suffers from anxiety that mirrors my symptoms EXACTLY.
Avatar f tn Effexor (an SNRI as mentioned above) is also a tough one to get off, compared to other ADs. Lexapro, Zoloft, Celexa and Prozac are typically the easier tolerated ADs (again, everyone is different). I personally would recommend sticking with the SSRIs vs the SNRIs for anxiety, because due to the fact that their primary mechanism of action affects norepinephrine (aka adrenaline), they are quite activating, and can cause more anxiety.
Avatar n tn Do you know if the worst effects of quitting Celexa occur in the initial stages or at the latter when I am off it? I am tapering as per my doc's guidelines and go to zero in 5 days. I guess I am doing well, but my spouse wants me back on it because he says I am overly positively emotional and too happy. I am not manic in my opinion; just super positive but enjoying little things too much in his opinion.
Avatar n tn I am now on day 5 and I seem to be doing much better on the celexa than on the prozac. With the prozac i felt really weird and not able to focus, but I feel ok with the celexa. But, I am very tired, but I was told that was common at first. Do you think that by now I would have felt some side effects if I was to have any? Thanks again!
Avatar f tn I am on Celexa which is being weined and Prozac was started yesterday. I cold turkey quit Lortab 60mg as f 6pm on Sunday after 8 months of use. Today when I get up too quickly, I become very dizzy and almost pass out. Am I in seratonin syndrome?
1427534 tn?1283119534 capegirlnoshoes, can you support your statements with evidences apart from the fact that Celexa is 2 years younger than Prozac (FDA approval dates)? Your statements are biased. One drug does not fit all, everyone is different.
Avatar n tn t specifically approved for anxiety, neither was Prozac when it first came out, but it did help many people with anxiety. So has Celexa. Specific approvals are more for patentability than anything else -- to get a copycat drug patented and approved by FDA you have to show it treats something different than previous medications. So Prozac got approval for depression, but was always used for anxiety as well.
Avatar f tn Yes, the Prozac can make him hyper. Our child took Prozac at the same age as your son and she, too, did not do well on it. It did help her anxiety but seemed to take away her "filter" for saying or doing appropriate things. Our doctor then placed her on Effexor - which worked well but today she is on Celexa (citalopram is the generic term) and this seems to be the best "fit" for her.
Avatar n tn ve tried several medications for anxiety and panic attacks, but have had major side effects from them all. Zoloft, Celexa, etc. My doctor recently prescribed Prozac for my anxiety and panic attacks. In reading about Prozac, it does list anxiety and panic, but they are down the list a ways. Does anyone know if Prozac is a good choice for this? I don't want to take them if they aren't going to do anything. I don't have OCD, which seems to be the main disorder Prozac is prescribed for.
Avatar n tn I was on prozac for 5 yrs it stopped working. I am taking celexa and wellbutrin, not the same. I know prozac works again after a break, I just need a ballpark idea of how long I have to be off prozac to go back on and have it work?
Avatar n tn Giving her Prozac & Celexa both SSRI's.....Not a good idea. I've never heard of any Psychiatrist combining two SSRI's like that. Cause for concern for sure.
Avatar f tn Lexapro is very similar to Celexa, it has one of the main components of Celexa, and tends to be overall easier to tolerate, so yes, if you ARE going to discuss that with your doc...that may be the way to go. Good point, kickbutt!
Avatar f tn trying to come up with some kind of suggestion you could ask a doctor about, and Prozac popped into my mind. I was switched to Prozac during my pregnancies, as it was considered "safer" than the other SSRIs, and I can say, out of the 2 ADs I've been on, that was the easiest to adjust to. I don't recall ANY side effects at all (I did have some initial side effects with Lexapro and Zoloft). I'm not surprised you had trouble with Celexa after having trouble with Lexapro.
Avatar f tn Hi! I've recently been prescribed Celexa (I plan to do about 20 mg for 9 months to a year). I know that Celexa, like any SSRI, causes sexual side effects like low libido, erectile dysfunction, and anorgasmia. My question is: Will these side effects wear off after I stop the Celexa? Can anyone who has experience with Celexa or other SSRIs tell me if their sexual side effects wore off after the treatment was over?
1288270 tn?1301287612 Prozac and Celexa are quite different, in that Prozac has a long half life in the body and therefore leaves more slowly. This either results in fewer withdrawal problems, or the withdrawal happens later down the road, maybe a month later. Lexapro leaves the body quite a bit more quickly, and so you are much more subject to a bad withdrawal by quitting abruptly. None of these should be quit abruptly, but the short half life ones especially so.
Avatar f tn My sister takes lexapro and loves it for her anxiety, my mom take celexa and abilify, my aunt takes lexapro also and loves it. My husband taks celexa for depression and lamictal for a mood stabalizer. He recently had to go off the lamictal and boy was it hard..he was so angry and mean so that really helps. But everyone is different. Your doc should try something else with you if prozac isnt working.
Avatar f tn I have been on Celexa for many many months now and about 6 weeks ago or so my Doc upped it too 40 mg. It is helping but not great, is this as good as it is gonna get and is it maybe time to try something else. I have tried many different ssris and srnis in the past. The only I have not been on is Paxil, tried prozac and had an awful reaction to it 2 weeks in. Any help or advice would be great..
