Prozac for social anxiety

Common Questions and Answers about Prozac for social anxiety

prozac

Avatar n tn Prozac can be very useful. However, it may not be necessary to employ medication. The first attempt should involve cognitive-behavioral treatment, and the clinician will likely be versed in this. If the use of CBT does not prove sufficient to remedy the difficulty, pharmacological treatment can be employed as an additonal component of the treatment plan.
Avatar m tn First month was fine, second month I feel this general sadness and lack of motivation, also extreme anxiety in large crowds. He originally gave me the Prozac for social anxiety disorder. I already do go to the gym for natural help. I am conflicted, I would love to take one less med. I don't like looking at all my pill bottles, if I tell him about the social anxiety he will probably bump me back up to 40mg and keep me on it.
Avatar f tn As far as evidence goes, the only problem this has been shown to help with are those with heart palpitations that are real and not imagined and those with social anxiety. Prozac isn't the best antidepressant for anxiety because it tends to be stimulating, so I'm guessing your main problem is anxiety. Only trying this drug will tell you if it will work, but it certainly was never approved for this purpose. It does help some. It doesn't appear to help most.
Avatar f tn Yes, the Prozac can make him hyper. Our child took Prozac at the same age as your son and she, too, did not do well on it. It did help her anxiety but seemed to take away her "filter" for saying or doing appropriate things. Our doctor then placed her on Effexor - which worked well but today she is on Celexa (citalopram is the generic term) and this seems to be the best "fit" for her.
Avatar f tn t seen a doctor about this, but I seem to fit the description exactly. I was treated for social anxiety about 10 years ago, along with depression. I am not depressed and haven't been since I was treated, but when I try to break my isolation and socialize more, it makes me depressed when it doesn't go well. It seems I'm left with the choice of self-imposed isolation or depression, but I would prefer neither. Are there medications that can treat this?
Avatar n tn I suffer from mild anxiety, panic and social phobia, Prozac worked great all those years and now symptoms are coming back. even more severe than before. I fear that any SSRI that I take will give me the same side effects, am taking klonopin when needed for sleep and panic. Have tried 5HTP,SAMe, St Johns Wort and the only one that seemed to work was SAMe but with a little anxiety and a little panic and social phobia ( that was about 10 years ago when I tried to stop Prozac).
Avatar f tn I was wondering if anyone else was proscribed Prozac for this and if it helped?! Would like to see the light at the end of this dreadful tunnel. I also posted this in the forum but noticed no one has posted in there since July so I thought I would get a better response here.
2044839 tn?1331255841 While I am not currently on Prozac, I did take it years ago and it worked very well for me. I took klonopin, a different benzo, without a problem as well. I'm not sure what side effects you were having that you are trying to avoid. I currently take Wellbutrin. It has not made me gain weight and it has not affected my sex life like so many of the other anti-depressants. Just a thought in case you need to go down the road of another med. Take care.
581310 tn?1253029550 I am feeling no different with the anxiety. I am thinking I might need to get on xanax for a little while until my prozac is increased since it is really driving me crazy. Any advice would be great.
709686 tn?1277432159 Beta blockers have been prescribed for anxiety for a long time. As someone above mentioned, they are especially effective in social anxiety situations...ie before speaking in front of a large group, etc. In that scenario, a person takes one about 30 min-1 hour before the event. A regular dosing of these types of meds (Inderal is one that is commonly Rxed) can also be very useful in combatting anxiety on a daily basis.
Avatar f tn It's going to take time for the Prozac to work, typically 4-6 weeks (if not a bit longer). Then, at that point, you will reevaluate the Prozac. Some people need a higher dose to achieve the desired level of effectiveness. If a higher dosage is needed, then the adjustment period (wait time if you will) will be even longer. In other words, this is a process, one that could easily take a few months before being able to really start seeing significant improvements.
Avatar f tn I'm on a lowish dose of Prozac for anxiety and depression. It's been doing wonders for me. I feel great 90% of the time, sleep pretty well, and am speaking up for myself more and feeling more comfortable in strange social situations. However, I have noticed that I'm not completely "cured". I don't know if it's normal to have panic attacks while on Prozac maybe once/month or so, but I seem to.
Avatar f tn Ive had social anxiety disorder for over 6 months but finally went to the doctor last week to be diagnosed and put on meds-the doctor put me on PROZAC 20mg daily, im on them a week now but feeling slightly worse the past few days, even slightly depressed. im just wondering will these feelings surpass eventully? as my doctor said it can take at least 2 weeks for them to settle. can anyone please help me as this is ruining my life. also is therapy a good solution for anxiety?
Avatar n tn Our child was on Prozac for a year when she was six years old - she sufferd from severe anxiety and depression. We had major issues with the Prozac. Her doctor placed her on Effexor for two-three years with moderate success but some side effects as sweating and poor sleep issues. She now takes a very low dose of Celexa and is doing well. If it were me, I think I might choose point (3) with one of the newer SSRI's (they tend to have fewer side effects).
Avatar m tn I have had GAD most of my adult life, and it manifests itself in many ways over the years- sometimes health anxiety, or social anxiety. In the last year I started to work for myself, so that means I am in charge of social media, emailing people, calling people on the phone, etc.
Avatar m tn I take Prozac. Your side effects could be from the Prozac, or it could just be anxiety in general. Anxiety can do this to people, weird dreams, waking up in a panic etc. Or it could be the Prozac. I have weird dreams time to time, I have no idea if it is the Prozac, or just me having dreams. I haven't really looked into it. 7 days on Prozac will not relief you from any anxiety. it will take 6-8 weeks. and by the 4th week or so your doctor might have you increase to 20mg instead of 10mg.
Avatar f tn It worked very well, but I also took xanax as needed for breakthrough anxiety. However, for the first two weeks or so, the prozac made my anxiety much worse. I toughed it out, and it did its thing. I don't know much about any interactions between birth control pills and antidepressants - expect that I've read that birth control pills can sometimes make depression worse, and some antidepressants can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills.
Avatar f tn I have noticed that they are sometimes triggered by stressful events like talking to strangers or running errands, as I think I’m starting to develop social anxiety. I’ve read it is linked to an increase in adrenaline which would make sense if I’m having a panic attack in these situations. I’ve seen two cardiologist who have done several tests and told my me heart is fine and that it is most likely anxiety, but there’s always that fear that they are wrong and it’s not anxiety.
Avatar m tn Hi i am on my 1st month of prozac but my anxiety it aboutt he same and thats with taking an ativan everyday. Has anyone tired tofranil or TCA's for anxiety??? I was on tofranil before for almost 2yrs but it was for postpartum depressi with anxiety racing thoughts insomnia ect.... It worked real well once my body adjusted for 8 weeks i think.
