m on 10mg of Prozac and have noticed some weight gain within the past 2 months or so and my doctor has suggested I start taking Wellbutrin along with the Prozac but my biggest concern is having panic attacks. I suffer from panic disorder w/ agoraphobia and the Prozac has been helping but I'm afraid that adding on the Wellbutrin may counteract that. (I know it is considered a stimulant for a lot of people - hence the usual weight loss.
Our child was on Prozac for a year when she was six years old - she sufferd from severe anxiety and depression. We had major issues with the Prozac. Her doctor placed her on Effexor for two-three years with moderate success but some side effects as sweating and poor sleep issues. She now takes a very low dose of Celexa and is doing well. If it were me, I think I might choose point (3) with one of the newer SSRI's (they tend to have fewer side effects).
I take Prozac. Your side effects could be from the Prozac, or it could just be anxiety in general. Anxiety can do this to people, weird dreams, waking up in a panic etc. Or it could be the Prozac. I have weird dreams time to time, I have no idea if it is the Prozac, or just me having dreams. I haven't really looked into it. 7 days on Prozac will not relief you from any anxiety. it will take 6-8 weeks. and by the 4th week or so your doctor might have you increase to 20mg instead of 10mg.
Hi i am on my 1st month of prozac but my anxiety it aboutt he same and thats with taking an ativan everyday. Has anyone tired tofranil or TCA's for anxiety??? I was on tofranil before for almost 2yrs but it was for postpartum depressi with anxiety racing thoughts insomnia ect.... It worked real well once my body adjusted for 8 weeks i think.
I beleive my 6 year old son has social anxiety and selective mutism in certain situations. He is overall doing fine but it seems to be affecting him at school and I'm concerned about the uncoming school year. I'm waiting for an appointment for him with a professional but wanted to know your opinion about the use of Prozac for this problem.
I'm 16 weeks with my 3rd. I'm having bad anxiety too. I know what to expect, I know what will happen, but still have bad anxiety. I think, how will i handle 3 kids, how will he fit in, I'm scared to death all over again! I have a 6 yr old and a 4yr old. Just the thought is sending me into panic attacks. I'm pretty sure it's the hormones, I always have anxiety a few days after giving birth, then it goes away.
Have you written to Dr. Gould for his feedback? He's the expert physician for mental health questions on this forum.
What is your chief complaint about the Prozac? Do you also have anxiety with your depression? I've been told that Prozac is quite energizing, so it can be challenging for those folks who have anxiety coupled with their depression.
Personally, I would never take Zyprexa. It's in the antipsychotic family, I believe. Have you read the side effects?
They drs. don't think that he has ADHD or any other disorder. He just has a fear of not knowing what to do and instead of asking for help like most kids he will sit there and cry. It's like the pressure is just to much for him. I have the teachers help with trying certain things in class. I also give him flax seed in as much food as possible for the OMEGA'S and I also spray him down morning and night with Magnesium oil.
The only time i DID NOT have any anxiety symptoms was when i was pregnant with my son. The symptoms returned with my first menstrual cycle 10 weeks post partum. I currently take Prozac 10mg 1 daily in the morning (been on it for about 16 days) and i take .5 Klonopin once daily in the morning. I have been taking 1/2 that dose so .25 in the morning on the days that the anxiety is not bad....however starting yesterday the anxiety has gotten really bad. I took .5 yesterday and today.
I *completely* understand wanting answers! You just want it to go away, don't you? We've all been there.
If your doctors have discussed anxiety with you, then I would trust them. I know it's hard to believe that anxiety can cause all this, but this important for all of us to remember. This isn't JUST anxiety. It's anxiety - it's big, and it's real for those of us who struggle. It doesn't mean we're weak, it doesn't mean we've failed.
My 7 YO son was diagnosed with anxiety over a year ago. We started him on Prozac this past September after coming to the realization that therapy alone was not working for him. We noticed IMMEDIATELY that he was hyper and attention deficit on the Prozac. The Dr. dismissed my claims and said that my son must be ADHD and that anxiety masks the disorder until the child gets on meds. She then tried to put my son on Ritalin. I fired her right quick!
I have a 13 yo son diagnosed with general anxiety disorder, mild depression, and OCD. He was put on prozac 1 1/2 years ago, starting at 10 mg. It helped a little, so eventually it was increased to 20 mg. In January, it was increased to 30 mg, but it seemed like the anxiety fears were more on the upswing, and the OCD wasn't as much under control.
He also had a lot of health issues going on that same year, and we believe the prozac was tangled up and at least increasing his stomach pain.
Prescribed 20 mg prozac for 15 years because I suffered from panic attacks. During my 15th yr. at 20mg prozac I suffered a panic attack and Dr. upped my dose to 40 then 60mg. Did not have another panic attack, but could not overcome the anticipatory fear of having another attack. Dr. included 50 BID of Lyrica three weeks ago and I'm feeling normal again. Anyone have any experience with lyrica?
As far as evidence goes, the only problem this has been shown to help with are those with heart palpitations that are real and not imagined and those with social anxiety. Prozac isn't the best antidepressant for anxiety because it tends to be stimulating, so I'm guessing your main problem is anxiety. Only trying this drug will tell you if it will work, but it certainly was never approved for this purpose. It does help some. It doesn't appear to help most.
It does appear that your grandson suffers from anxiety - whether it is OCD or one of the others or a combination is really irrelevant - diagnosis and treatment is what is important as your grandson will not outgrow his anxiety nor will it go away; but, anxiety is highly treatable and the prognosis for early intervention is excellent.

You have to look at it from both perspectives. The constant anxiety that comes with OCD is not good for the baby especially if it affects your appetite and then you will see write ups about not taking meds when pregnant. I can't tell you what to do but I can tell you that with my first pregnancy I had OCD problems and at 3.5 months I took klonopin sparingly and Prozac. I stayed on Prozac for my entire second pregnancy. My oldest son is fine.
