1458799 tn?1328757528 Pharmacodynamics Bupropion is a relatively weak inhibitor of the neuronal uptake of norepinephrine and dopamine, and does not inhibit monoamine oxidase or the re-uptake of serotonin. While the mechanism of action of bupropion, as with other antidepressants, is unknown, it is presumed that this action is mediated by noradrenergic and/or dopaminergic mechanisms." (from drugs.com) The most important thing you need to keep in mind is that this is the next step in addressing your anxiety....
Avatar m tn Zyban is the same as Wellbutrin which is a commonly prescribed antidepressant and is an NDRI meaning norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor. So basically the concept of the medication is that when you quit smoking you quit getting your regular dopamine fix (the brain rewards you for smoking a cigarette by releasing dopamine which makes you feel good.) The zyban, over the course of a few weeks, stops your body from breaking down the natural dopamine in your brain as quickly.
Avatar n tn Are you sure it was Zoloft and not Zyban? I was prescribed Zyban to help me quit smoking and it worked very well. Its generic name is Wellbutrin, which is an anti-depressant, but a side effect of it is that it decreases the need or craving for nicoteen.
Avatar m tn The sustained release formulation fared almost as well with a rate of 25%. In contrast, the SSRIs (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and Celexa), venlafaxine (Effexor) and mirtazapine (Remeron) averaged about 40%. When subjects were removed who had other probable causes of sexual dysfunction, the results were even better. Wellbutrin's rate dropped to 7% with the other medications dropping to between 23-30%. 1752977 tn?1418221796 I took Zyban to quit smoking many years ago, and I took it for a couple weeks before I knew I was pregnant. The pregnancy was enough to keep me from starting again, and since I wasn't taking it for it's use as an antidepressant my Dr. wanted me to stop taking it. Certain antidepressants have been linked to birth defects, and that's what Zyban is. It is the antidepressant Wellbutrin marketed as a stop smoking aid under a different name. Congrats on quitting and good luck!
Avatar m tn http://highbloodpressure.about.com/od/lifeafterdiagnosis/a/antidepressants.htm As to using SSRIs to treat hypotension, they, along with beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, theophylline, and many other drugs are used to treat a very particular disorder called POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), in which people's heart rates rise and their blood pressure falls when they change position from lying down to sitting or standing.
Avatar f tn Hello, Chantix (varenicline) and Zyban (bupropion) are the only two non-nicotine medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for smoking cessation; both are available in pill form and only by prescription. Chantix received FDA approval in 2006; Zyban was approved in 1997. These drugs can be effective tools, but users need to be aware of some potentially serious side effects. You can try that and they are very cheap in some pharmacy's.
Avatar f tn I took wellbutrin years ago and don't remember it doing anything but help me quit smoking. I recently started taking Prozac and could tell a difference the first day and it just continued to get better after that. I would try Prozac or other SSRI.
Avatar f tn t know if I should start taking this drug if it is dangerous for me when combining pot and bupropion. I am 17 and 130 lbs if that would help for anything and am taking a dosage of 150 mg of bupropion. I just want to make sure nothing dangerous will happen if I do smoke, or how much I can smoke, or if there is anything I can do to lower risk of danger like not taking the drug on the days I smoke.
599170 tn?1300973893 The answer is no. No two meds affect anyone the same. They have potentially different side effects, are metabolized by different pathways in your liver, attach to receptors differently, and each individual just reacts differently. Which is to say, if you think you don't need the med and you're on four meds and want to see if you don't need this one, that's great.
475300 tn?1312423126 weight gain, sleeplessness, too sleepy during the day, lethargy, sweating, upset stomach, constipation and on and on and on..., you get the picture. I just decided to give up on them and do something different.
Avatar n tn I need to quit smoking (again) I am currently on Rebif and Zyban (which I took last time I quit) is a big "no no" as well are the other drugs my neuro knew of. Does anyone know of a "safe" drug to take while on Rebif in order to quit?
Avatar m tn HI, i recently started wellbutrin i have never taken it before but I have taken zyban to quit smoking and I had no side effects and according to the bottle they seem the be the same thing (generic wise), I have also started a low carb diet very recently.. The problem I want to talk about is something Ive had for a while but since starting wellbutrin it seems worse. I have a burning full feeling on my upper left abdomen just below my ribs.
Avatar f tn I also was on Wellbutrin without Xanax for a few months and it did nothing for my anxiety....and I was not depressed...the shrink put me on that for anxiety only. It did NOT work for me. I'm sure everyone is different. Good luck!
Avatar f tn When I was taking Prozac I didnt gain weight.Paxcel made me gain some though.
Avatar n tn I am able to live with my attacks (which can get really bad at times) and I actually have a fear of taking meds. I think the only thing I will take is a child's dose of tylenol only when I have a fever or migrane. I have discovered that taking Vitamin B Complex capsules have helped reduce my stress and anxiety levels. Also, I still love taking Flinstone vitamins, on top of the vit B complex. I feel great when I don't miss out in taking one a day.
Avatar f tn The Dr said this would go away once the prozac fully kicked in , but its been a month and nothing. I know the prozac is helping but i have ups and downs all day. If I sit at home by myself for an hr or two i will feel depression and or anxiety. I guess my question is..... do you think that I should request a higher mg of prozac (20) or keep giving the 10mg pills a try? I hate having to try so hard to not feel depressed.
Avatar f tn Hi i'm on Prozac and trazodone if you start on a low dose of trazodone it shouldn't be an issue and there really is no interaction with trazodone and Prozac because I've been on trazodone and Prozac for years and I've never had a problem you just have to take it like maybe you're better off just taking half a tablet or something
Avatar f tn First of all, you shouldn't just stop taking antidepressants without discussing it with your doctor. Fortunately, you weren't on the Prozac long enough and you were at a very low dose, so you didn't experience the nasty effects of going cold turkey off these types of meds. Prozac can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to reach "steady state" in your body. That is the point at which it will begin to help you.
Avatar f tn I have been on and off prozac for 4 years and i now am experiencing heartburn. I take 20mg at night because it makes me dizzy but i dont get the heartburn until the afternoon the next day. I was wondering is it safe to take ranitidine 150mg effervescent? I took it all the time when needed before being back on prozac and it works i was wondering does it cause any side affect?
Avatar f tn Hi Elaine, Hi Elaine, I posted in the other forum (pregnancy) about being put on prozac 10 mg. I have taken your great advice and am doing yoga and breathing exercises to deal with my mild anxiety instead. But heres my question to put my mind at ease. I took the prozac at 28 weeks for about a week. It wasnt right for me and I was too worried I was doing harm to the baby. After my 3 miscarriages last year I am always worried now.
