Protonix versus prilosec

Common Questions and Answers about Protonix versus prilosec

protonix

Avatar f tn I've been taking Prilosec for a month now, it started helping but then stopped. Then when I went to my doctor Thursday, she switched me to Protonix. If they are basically the same, could Protonix work for me if Prilosec OTC didn't? I'd really like to know because I've had this problem for almost 3 months now and I'm tired of eating plain food.
Avatar f tn I cannot get Protonix any longer through my health insurance and was wondering if someone took something else as effective. Prilosec and Nexium do not have as good as effect as Protonix for me. Thanks.
Avatar f tn Anyone out there on Protonix? I was diagnosed with acid reflux and was put on Nexium which helped slightly with my burping but I was still getting stomach aches. I went for an abdominal ultrasound, endescopy and CT scan with IV contrast and all came back fine. My Dr just switched me to Protonix.
Avatar f tn Mine was too! I was eating at least 8 tums a day until my doctor suggested at my 28 week check up that I take Prilosec until the end of my pregnancy. I was worried at first because I didn't want to take anything that would harm my baby, but she reassured me that Prilosec & Zantac are safe during pregnancy. Zantac will help fight symptoms after the fact for up to 12 hours & Prilosec will stop symptoms before they start all day.
Avatar f tn My HMO will not cover the cost for Protonix or the generic form. Can you tell me if OTC Prilosec will have the same efficacy as Protonix? Thank you for your time.
709686 tn?1277432159 Protonix (Pantoprozole) does not give me problems...maybe a little weight loss. Omeprazole (Prilosec or Zegerid) causes me all kinds of problems. Headache, chest pain, red/irritated eyes, all kinds of body aches, constipation and extreme thrist. Problem is...protonix is by script only and VERY EXPENSIVE! Someone talk to me about this. Has anyone else experienced these problems with Omeprazole?
Avatar m tn From what I am reading protonix is the same as prilosec they r both PPI and one thing u must be careful of is if u continue to get worse on meds it can be u have too little acid in ur system and acid is needed to break down the foods u eat.Plus the symptoms r very similar. My father has been on prilosec and protonix at the same time....he did have a gall bladder issues and had it removed...still on the meds tho. Make sure u tell ur dr of ne changes in how u feel.
Avatar n tn This is an update to what I wrote on Jan. 25. I thought it may help someone else. I don't believe that i have the eosinophilic esophagitis. Thankfully, I have not had to have another scope. I have lost almost 25 pounds. Insurance wouldn't pay for Protonix. Went back to Prilosec. Have now switched to Prevacid and so far that has been working. I am feeling much better. I think I had an erosive esophagus again.
Avatar n tn I was instructed to take Protonix in the morning and Priolsec in the evening. I stopped the Protonix yesterday and will not take the Prilosec tonight. I have silent GERD, with no burning sensations in my throat to warn me of the acid coming up my throat. However, I do get a feeling of "fullnes" in my throat that must be the GERD. Since the sensation of fullness never really went away in my throat anyway, I doubt the medications were working.
Avatar f tn The best medicines I have been prescribed are Nexium and Protonix. Protonix has a generic available so is inexpensive and works perfectly for me. Studies have shown Nexium to be consistently the most effective but it is more expensive and not always covered by every health insurance plan. United Healthcare for example does not cover Nexium.

1387175 tn?1326400997 H2 blockers (ex. Zantec or Pepcid) are another type of medication used to treat GERD. PPI's (ex. Prilosec, Prevacid, Dexilant, Nexium, Protonix) are another class of medications used to treat GERD. H2 blockers are generally thought to be safer with less adverse reactions than PPI's.

221122 tn?1323011265 I also remember, in the past, having bad times with PVCs and I might have been on Prilosec, Prevacid or Protonix at the time. I was on them for a long stretch. Anyone else?
1806721 tn?1554333407 Hi, my doc put me on 14d Prevpac treatment today. I've been taking Prilosec during the past month or so to get my symptoms under control. It works quite well for me. I have never taken Prevacid before. Are these two the same thing? Can I use Prilosec to substitute the Prevacid in the pack? I'm scared of stopping Prilosec as my symptoms always get worse when I tried to wean myself off the drug in the past.
Avatar n tn I am a longtime user of Protonix for GERD, about 11 years. For the last few months I have had increasing problems with deep muscle spasms in my upper legs, spasms in my hands and fingers, feet and toes and esophagus. New Protonix info indicated long time users may develop magnesium defiencey leading to cramping in the extremities. 250 mg magnesium a day and now two times a day seems to alleviate the problems. I would like to switch prescriptions.
Avatar n tn Has anyone tried Zegerid? So far I have tried Prevacid, Aciphex, Prilosec,Protonix, and Nexium. Aciphex gave me bad side effects and Nexium made my reflux symptoms worse. Prilosec did absolutely nothing for me. I was successfully treated for H. Pylori in Nov 07. Since then I have been suffering from Water Brash and now heartburn. I don't know where to turn. My GI now wants me to take Zegerid(isn't this med just like Prilosec with sodium?).
Avatar f tn I have been taking Protonix for 5 yrs. Originally had Bowel obstruction surgery 7 yrs. agao. Bad doctor from emergency room referral, no antibiotics before during or after. Contracted acute sepsis, jaundice then ARDS. On ventelator in coma for several weeks. Upon awakening had hole in my stomach size of a football. Several failed mesh surgeries, finally flapped and repaired by reputable nationally known surgeon. Still have adhesions requiring decompression sometim es, etc.
Avatar f tn At the end of September, after having an endoscopy performed, I was Dx with severe Gastritis and given a new Rx for Protonix to be taken twice a day for 6 months which meant 60 pills/month. Being that Prilosec and Protonix are in the same drug class my insurance company has stated that I've hit my 90 tablet/90 day limit. The Protonix has finally helped with the pain and discomfort I've been having and now my insurance company won't cover it.
Avatar f tn How were you diagnosed w peptic ulcer would be my first question. Did you have a H. Pylori blood test? If that is positive the treatment is 2 antibiotics and bismuth for 2 weeks. It is a bacteria that can penetrate the thick mucus lining in the stomach and causes ulcers. Protonix can cause constipation. I recently failed both Nexium and Protonix due to side effects. But the constipation was terrible despite everything I threw at it.
Avatar n tn Besides the cost, is their truly a difference between Nexim and Prilosec. The active components in Nexium are esomprazole magnesium and in Prilosec are Omeprazole Magnesium. Also, Nexium comes in 20 mg and 40 mg capsules and Prilosec is sold over the counter in 20 mg tablets. My GI switched me to Nexium because Aciphex gave me terrible side effects and Protonix made my water brash symptoms ever worse. I have tried Prilosec in the past and it didn't have much of an effect for me.
Avatar f tn My doctor just prescribed me Prilosec for my heartburn. Has anyone else taken this? Im just a little worried to take medication while pregnant .
Avatar f tn Hi, I have had acid reflux for years. Have taken multiple meds (prilosec, prevacid, protonix, etc.) and the all seem to work for awhile then i need to switch. Actually don't have much heartburn but bloating, burping, gassy, etc. Now have a very sour taste in mouth all the time. Am on 20 mg prilosec and have stepped it up to 2 a day. seems like it's getting worse. definitely not getting better. feel sick alot. have a doctor's appt.
Avatar n tn My husband had a stent placed a little over 2 weeks ago. He took Prilosec OTC once a day prior to his heart attack for heartburn/reflux. Since his heart attack and stent, his heartburn/reflux has become much more frequent and severe. His doctor prescribed Protonix 40 mg once a day, but he still has to take antacids throughout the day to try to control it. Has anyone else experienced this and how did you resolve it?
1140169 tn?1370185076 Thanks folks. Hey Dennis, I don't mind doing the gastro scope again, they put you out, and there isn't the awful prep like there is with the colonoscopy. I hear you opie74. When I first started on pantoprazole 6 or 8 years ago, it started working for me from the first day. About a year ago I complained to my Doc that I was getting heartburn, etc, too often again, and he upped my dose to 2 pantoprazole per day, which barely improved things, hense the scope.
Avatar f tn Acid reflux is not considered heartburn. I had so bad first pregnancy that I lost 70lbs and felt terrible all the way through. This pregnancy I have it also not as terrible as first I'm halfway through it and I've only lost 20lbs. Protonix is what doc gave first time this time doc is giving Prilosec could be reason I'm not sure. I hope you're getting treatment for acid reflux could cause long term esophagus issues.
Avatar f tn I have burning in my esophagus, pain under my sternum, sore gums, very sensitive teeth, neck and chest are always bright red and hot. My hair is thinning and my skin is sensitive. I also have pain in my abdomen, usually on the left side. I've had CT scans, ultrasounds, MRIs, upper endoscopy, stress test and have found nothing. I've been on 40 mg of Prilosec for three months and it made me feel a little better but not great.
