She was prescribed 40mg of Protonix once a day. She has been taking this medication for one week, and has been experiencing dizziness and nausea. She weighs about 120 lbs. I looked online, and it appears that these are side effects that some patients experience. My question is: would Nexium pose the same problems for her?

I had an upper endescopy done and abdominal ultrasound due to some stomach pain I was experiencing. The ultrasound came back normal and my upper endescopy showed Grade A Reflux and Gastritis. The Dr gave me Nexium, but I was still getting upper stomach pain and pressure in the chest an back. I was switched to Protonix and it seemed to help with the upper stomach pain right under the breastbone. I'm taking two pills a day. Does anyone know how long Protonix takes to work?
Added Astelin nasal spray and double Protonix dosage (10 days)

So, nothing is helping and the sensations are very troubling. IT is worth noting that I was diagnosed with Hashimotos Thyroidits about one year ago because of active anti thyroid antibodies.

Earlier this week I went to fill one of my prescriptions and was told by the pharmacy that my health insurance would not allow the refill as I had hit my 90 day dosage limit. I've been going through a lot of abdominal issues since July and have been given different medications to try over the course of the past 4 months. During this time I was given an Rx for Prilosec in both July and August, which reacted badly with my body so I stopped taking it.
I went to see family doc and he did blood test to rule out pancreatitis (result came back normal), and put me on Protonix 40mg, once a day. I took for couple of weeks, and felt ok, so stopped, but pain would come back, so went back on it couple of days later. The bottle had 30pills, and one refill. After I took for 30days, I was off of it couple of days but again, the pain was coming back, so I went to get refill, and started taking daily.
Anyone out there on Protonix? I was diagnosed with acid reflux and was put on Nexium which helped slightly with my burping but I was still getting stomach aches. I went for an abdominal ultrasound, endescopy and CT scan with IV contrast and all came back fine. My Dr just switched me to Protonix.
I have been to the hospital twice with two ekgs done normal and a lot of blood work normal I have bad shoulder pains leg pains arms ache and neck hurts when I drink or eat anything my chest hurts and my back hurts can stress and gets cause this I get headaches daily and the pain in shoulders and arms daily
I've been on Protonix for several years, recently my dosage was upped to two 40 mg. I have nighttime reflux, never any symptoms during the day. All lifestyle changes made, bed elevation, not eating after 6:00pm, etc. etc. My doctor, whom I consider an able physician, has repeatedly assured me of the safety of the PPI class of drugs. Even said her 9 year old daughter was on Protonix.
Had total thyroid removal in September 2011. Voice still gets hoarse when I talk alot. Also, right side of my neck and under chin feels numb and tender to the touch.
Been prescribed Omeprazole and now Protonix for "acid on vocal cord (box). Never had any acid reflux or heartburn. Have appointment for a "Swallowing Test" next month.
As for the neck/chin issue...docs don't seem to be concerned about it. Was told it won't go away.
ve been having severe stomach pain and now my GI doctor thinks it is from the Protonix, which it probably is. His solution is to take me off of the protonix completely. He told me to go cold turkey off of it, but I am having such bad heartburn that I think I'm going to taper it. Shouldn't it be tapered anyways since going off of that much PPI would cause your stomach to over produce acid? Anyone have any ideas?
old and have tried all the different perscription medications. I have been taking protonix for about 5 years now and I'm concerned about long term use of protonix and all the other heartburn medications I have been taking for 30 years. I still suffer from heartburn daily. I have had 4 Endoscopy's done at different times and my Dr. say's it does show some inflammation but no Barrett's Desease, thank God.
s (proton pump inhibitors) are a group of medications used to treat GERD like Prilosec, Prevacid, Protonix, Aciphex, Nexium, and Dexilant.
I agree with jrbon and just want to add, I think it's unlikely you can handle the problem by simply adding a magnesium supplement, since your blood pressure has always been low. Adding magnesium could tend to make the blood pressure drop even more. Hopefully there will be other ways, besides taking Nexium, that your acid reflux symptoms can be addressed. FWIW, I was on Prilosec for years, finally had to stop because of the side effects, and now am off of it with no problems.
ve had my stomach scope, ultrasound of my gall bladder, HIDA scan, gastric emptying study, tubeless enterlysis and all tests came back normal. But my stomach constantly burns in spite of the diet change and meds(prilosec or acidphx, activated charcoal, tums). I'm also naseaus after bowel movements or diarrhea(whichever comes first). My gas is awful the burps scare people away and the farts make sure they don't come back.
Nothing worked until I got closer to my 2nd tri and the zofran worked with the protonix. I still take protonix and zofran and im 30 weeks. It is sooooo easy to feel defeated but just find something that always brings you peace. For me at my lowest I had to have myself a good cry....like gooood snot everywhere eyes puffy cry and listen to gospel music. I was ready to give up but I made it through. If you pray...keep praying.and take each day as it comes. You can do it.
I have been taking protonix for four years now, and have loved how well it works! However, if there is ever a time where I forget my protonix such as leaving it behind on a vacation, within 3-5 days, I find myself in serious stomach pain, or in some instances even puking. I don't know if it's 'normal' but you're definitely not the only person having these problems! Hope you feel better once taking the pills again.
I was sent to a GI and scoped, stating esophagitis and small hiatal hernia. I was placed on Protonix once a day. I felt better, so went off, only to have a year of on and off again chest pain/breathing issues and on/off PPI medication. During this year, I have also had a full cardiac workup and full pulmonary function test, both of which were perfect. A few months ago I was sent back to the GI and he wanted another scope. This time he said GERD and to stay on medication.
I called it a poisoning because she was IVed with Protonix twice even though her drs knew she was allergic.Allergic reactions to Protonix are many and are 99 times out of 100 diagnosed as something else.Unfortunately a certain number of patients will experience severe reactions to Protonix such as pancreatitis.That is why Altana,the German company who developed Protonix made Wyeth set aside monies to cover such reactions before they sold the patent to Wyeth.
