Avatar m tn ve been having severe stomach pain and now my GI doctor thinks it is from the Protonix, which it probably is. His solution is to take me off of the protonix completely. He told me to go cold turkey off of it, but I am having such bad heartburn that I think I'm going to taper it. Shouldn't it be tapered anyways since going off of that much PPI would cause your stomach to over produce acid? Anyone have any ideas?
Avatar f tn Yes, it is possible for acid reflux to cause much of the symptoms you mentioned...it is best to see a GI Dr for testing as it is possible to have similar symptoms for too little acid as well as too much, so meds for too much can make you feel worse....and there are other medical issues that could cause similar symptoms. Go for testing and let us know what you find out. Also look to your families medical history.
1580703 tn?1651904887 While GERD could cause nausea, nausea itself is a very non-specific symptom and could result from GI infection/ inflammation, micronutrient deficiencies, GI motility issues, o non-GI causes such as stress/ anxiety, hormonal/ endocrine imbalances, metabolic issues, micronutrient deficiencies, medication side effect etc. I would suggest getting this evaluated by an internist initially and depending on the cause diagnosed/ suspected, it can be managed accordingly or specialist care may be sought.
Avatar f tn I was sent to a GI and scoped, stating esophagitis and small hiatal hernia. I was placed on Protonix once a day. I felt better, so went off, only to have a year of on and off again chest pain/breathing issues and on/off PPI medication. During this year, I have also had a full cardiac workup and full pulmonary function test, both of which were perfect. A few months ago I was sent back to the GI and he wanted another scope. This time he said GERD and to stay on medication.
168348 tn?1379357075 **ooops* I spelled it wrong! No wonder why I came up blank on searches LOL! Thanks for the input .....I like the idea of the sodium bicarb .. that is an old-fashioned remedy by Dad drank by the gallon it seems as I recall as he suffered from GERD but nobody had a diagnosis back then other than "indigestion". So all these yrs. later we know that the GI stuffs come from my side of the family and the allergies, too!
Avatar f tn Hi, I took protonix for 5 years and all of a sudden it just stop working. I took it for inflammation of the stomach and inflammation of the esp, It is really miserable.
Avatar n tn However my Gastro DR says no way my hernia is causing this issue. Im on Pepcid, Carafate, GI cocktail, and protonix.
Avatar m tn Heartburn, throat feels like its on fire, chest pain, acid taste, indigestion, back pain, burping, acid coming up every time I burp. Finally got in to the gastro dr. He put me on protonix, and scheduled me for an EGD and Gastric Emptying Test. Both came back fine, but still feel horrible. Surgeons question if it could be anxiety? I really don't think so. Went back to the gastro today to follow up. He changed my dose of protonix, and said to see how that worked.
Avatar n tn I have lost 12 pnds in 3 wks.Was admitted to hospital for dehydration.Have an ultrasound, catscan, hida scan and upper gi series. The only thing abnormal was upper gi showed sever gastroesphagal reflux.I had a lap nissen about 8 yrs ago,and havent had heart burn since.Could this be a complication from the lap nissen, and if so would it have showed on these test if something was herniated?
786158 tn?1236397775 I have a long family history of heart disease and have high blod pressure (taking avapro) and gerd(taking protonix) I have noticed a frequency in the pvc's since i started the avapro and protonix. Do i need to do any further testing? Do you think that these pvc's are increasing do to the meds? Thanks so much!
Avatar f tn You may have reflux disease . A GI dr can determine this. He can prescribe a PPI like nexium or Protonix which should help these symptoms.
Avatar m tn Was diagnosed with delayed gastric emptying and given Protonix. I have had 2 pyloric dilatations but I still have pain in the upper abdominal and chest areas behind the sternum. The regurgitation is better. GI and cardiology cleared me for any overt issues, but I'm having abdominal and chest pain, nausea and vertigo that starts with a strange wave or flushing in my belly and travels upward. It gets really nauseous and I can hear my heart pulsating in my ears. The vertigo is the worst.
Avatar n tn He received a prescription for Protonix 40mg daily and was sent home. The next day, the severe pain attack came again, he again was told to go to the ER and did. The same things happened, only no new RX for a PPI. Our PCP sent him to a GI doc for upper scope and colonoscopy - both came back as normal findings and negative for H. pylori. He was increased on the Protonix to 40mg BID and told that it was GERD.
Avatar f tn I tried prilosec, nexium, prevacid and now im on protonix. The only one that worked (until a month ago) was protonix. Everyone reacts differently to different drugs even though they basicaly do the same thing. As long as your not having any pain it doesn't sound like it is getting worse but i would definatley after 18 days ask your Dr to maybe try a different PPI.
Avatar f tn After taking some higher doses of ibuphofen for a back injury, I started to have heartburn where my whole abdominal area from stomach to intestines felt on fire and I began having yellow stools. This has been going on for 2 months and I have lost 17 pounds. I was put on omeprazole which helped with the burning for a little while and then seemed to stop working. They tried ranitidine and it didn't work at all. Now I am on protonix 40mg twice a day.
Avatar f tn I was hospitalized for a GI bleed from a gastric ulcer which caused acute blood anemia about 4 weeks ago. After I was discharged I started to feel better and get my energy back after 2 weeks. (I received 2 units of blood in the hospital). But, in the past week I have increasing started to get fatigued and only able to do limited min. activities. I also get easily short of breath when I exert too much.
Avatar f tn But in the following days I noticed the pain in my side came back more aggressively. Went to my PC and was referred to a GI. While waiting for the GI appt it became more uncomfortable so I went to he ER. They did blood work, CT scan and ultrasound. They didn't see anything no stones etc and sent me home chalking it up as anxiety and gave me a Ativan.
Avatar n tn I recently was changed from prilisec to protonix which greatly relieved the laryngeal irritation from silent gerd. Two nights past week have awakened with severe nerve pain entire left thorax (front & back between shoulder blades) and left arm/hand. Ironically no substernal chest pain. Echo and persantine tests normal 3 months ago (done to evaluate for PH/copd) It was 9/10 and 10/10 severity nerve pain, not muscle, no brash, no acid in throat, etc. It lasted less than 10 minutes.
Avatar n tn The doctor said it was stress and prescribed Protonix . Protonix is for acid reflux- I have never had heartburn or acid reflux. The pain subsided (I believe due to the Tylonel 3 which has codeine in it). I ate some chicken broth and crackers, took the Protonix and here a few hours later, I am feeling the pain coming back. I do not have any stress in my life at the moment, so I just don't think this is due to an acidic stomach from stress.
Avatar n tn I've been having pain under my left rib cage for several months now. At first, it would go away for awhile and then come back, but now it is basically constant. Burning pain in a distinct spot. I also have sporadic burning pain under my left breast area. Sometimes my back hurts along the same line as my front rib pain. I also have the same burning pain right above my navel. I thought it might be an ulcer, but when I started having pain in more than one area, I'm not so sure.
Avatar f tn so i went to another gi today. she suggested going off protonix and start nexium 2 x day for 1 month when i should be completely symptom free and after 1 month do another egd. i don't know what to do. i was eager to stop the meds now they want me to 2 x per day!!!however am i going to wean off them ? what do i do ?
709686 tn?1277432159 I've been diagnosed with Peptic Ulcer Disease and currently take Protonix and Carafate and I think I've developed some side effects to the Protonix (Cough, Dizzy, ligthheaded, lower back pain.) Also...I suffer from bad belching, gas and pressure which I just found out is something called Dyspepsia. Over the past 4 years I've taken aspirin on a regular bases for headaches and general body aches and pains and read on a website that aspirin can be a major contributor to Dyspepsia.
Avatar f tn Gosh, I'll be curious what the GI doctor says. I've had upper right quadrant pain and it was gall bladder related. But they've ruled that out. Everything you search talks about organs in that area. The only one on you they haven't looked at is the pancreas. Does this get worse after you eat or is it just always there?
