Protonix and bone loss

Common Questions and Answers about Protonix and bone loss

protonix

Avatar f tn I have been taking proton pump inhibitors for 18 years and have just begun hearing about bone loss and other issues. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia after finally seeing a doctor about the pain that I have endured for over 10 years. I was diagnosed with quite a bit of hearing loss a little over 5 years ago as well and have been wearing two hearing aids since, one ear being worse than the other. I am now wondering if it is due to the ppi meds.
Avatar m tn m not getting relief with chiropractic care or anything else for that matter, I started thinking about medication and side effects. The protonix s the only thing that could possibly be the culprit. I went off of it two days ago, took omaprazole instead, and have had a 50% reduction in the pain. Has anyone else experienced this. I am reluctant to mention it to the doctor because I'm afraid he will dismiss it. I want to be sure before I talk to him.
Avatar f tn I have gone on diets and lost weight but usually quickly gain it and more back ever time. Plus my GERD is now not under control. Can the protonix truly be blamed for some weight gain that won't go away? I also have other things going on that might be attributed to the protonix which I have given different meds to combat. I think I need a reset. I have had numerous knee replacements all of which began from my bone fracturing under the prosthetic.
Avatar n tn I started this the same time as my 2x daily protonix. After and during weight lifting it feels as though I cant breathe and have to sit down, then I belch for like 5 minutes. At the end it takes 2-3 hours before my stomach feels 'normal' again and I can actualy eat anything. I also have a hard time breathing due to this feeling of 'gas' in my upper stomach. I have had two endoscopies done with them saying my z-line (sphincter muscle?) was abnormal.
Avatar f tn I take Protonix to control my gerd. An allergist recommended this and it does seem to make a difference. Does anyone else take these types of meds to control their gerd and, ultimately, help with asthma? I cannot get Protonix any longer through my health insurance and was wondering if someone took something else as effective. Prilosec and Nexium do not have as good as effect as Protonix for me. Thanks.
Avatar m tn I have been posting in the addiction forum because I was taking pain med for knees and began taking too much, then decided to quit. It's been a few months since I stopped the meds and I've experienced a lot of neck and shoulder pain. I've been seeking treatment with massage and chiropractic care. The pain is not subsiding at all. The chiropractor said that I don't have an injury, but fascia...itis in neck and shoulder.
Avatar f tn The surgery worked best on my lower teeth, slowing down the bone loss significantly and rebuilding bone/tooth connection (that's what the gortex is for. That type of surgery is even more advanced now, I think). It didn't have as much success with my more advanced upper teeth. You have to identify all compromised teeth and undergo aggressive treatment (surgery, root planing..), and then take very good care of your teeth and gums for the rest of your life.
Avatar f tn dentist said I have 50% bone loss. Is there anything else I can do to prevent further bone loss?
Avatar m tn I have lost bone under my bridge and the dentist says I need partials ...is there any way to graft bone and put the bridge back?
Avatar f tn Hi from what I understand protonix is an rx while prilosec is over the counter meds...... so I do believe that the protonix is stronger.I am not a dr, just going on what I do know, I know both r PPI and work much the same way.....Ur dr should be able to say y he changed ur meds...everyone is different and react to the meds differently....maybe bcuz the prilosec dtopped working instead of changing meds he should check to see y u r making so much acid. I have noticed mine cycles....
Avatar n tn Hello, I am in my early twenties and recently had my upper left premolar extracted and replaced with an implant. I know that bone loss can occur when a tooth is extracted, and the implant is supposed to prevent such bone loss from occurring, but will there be any bone loss at all? I am really concerned because I am so young and don't want my facial appearance to change. Thank you so much.
709686 tn?1277432159 Headache, chest pain, red/irritated eyes, all kinds of body aches, constipation and extreme thrist. Problem is...protonix is by script only and VERY EXPENSIVE! Someone talk to me about this. Has anyone else experienced these problems with Omeprazole?
Avatar f tn I have periodontitis and consequently have bone loss throughout my mouth. I recently had #15 extracted. Today I went for my one week postoperative checkup. The site had not healed; I am to return in one week. My concern: I don't understand why my dentist didn't do any restorative procedures when he extracted the tooth. He gave me an explaination, but I didn't understand.
Avatar f tn I have been to the hospital twice with two ekgs done normal and a lot of blood work normal I have bad shoulder pains leg pains arms ache and neck hurts when I drink or eat anything my chest hurts and my back hurts can stress and gets cause this I get headaches daily and the pain in shoulders and arms daily
Avatar f tn Hi Selma, I thank God that I had an abdominal ulrasound and cat scan with and without IV contrast and all was clear. I was so afraid that I had pancreatic cancer. My Dr told me that the CT scan was the best test for the pancreas. I just get nervous because I still get a discomfort way up high under my breastboneand occasionaly in my back but my Dr said this could be acid reflux. My endescopy also showed that I have gastritis which I know is painful as well.
Avatar f tn I went for an abdominal ultrasound, endescopy and CT scan with IV contrast and all came back fine. My Dr just switched me to Protonix.

231441 tn?1333892766 Keep in mind that numerous sources have said that conditions for bone loss are not caused by excessive thyroid levels. If bone loss conditions don't exist, then thyroid levels would have no impact. If bone loss conditions already exist, higher metabolism due to increased thyroid levels may increase the rate of bone loss. Effective treatment should be to address the conditions causing bone loss, not by withholding thyroid meds.
Avatar m tn Thyroid hormone does not cause bone loss, it simply increases metabolism and therefore the rate of the current bone formation or loss. Most older women are losing bone due to their combined sex steroid, DHEA, Vitamin D, and growth hormone deficiencies. The solution is not life-long hypothyroidism, but the correction of their other deficiencies. " http://hormonerestoration.com/files/ThyroidPMD.
709686 tn?1277432159 I've been diagnosed with Peptic Ulcer Disease and currently take Protonix and Carafate and I think I've developed some side effects to the Protonix (Cough, Dizzy, ligthheaded, lower back pain.) Also...I suffer from bad belching, gas and pressure which I just found out is something called Dyspepsia. Over the past 4 years I've taken aspirin on a regular bases for headaches and general body aches and pains and read on a website that aspirin can be a major contributor to Dyspepsia.
Avatar n tn The pain seemed to stop by the time I left the hospital the next day and they gave me 30 Protonix. The endoscopy a few days ago did not yield any real results, only finding minor irritation that they suggested could be the beginning of Acid Reflux, but I'm not sure because I do not have many of the symptoms (no nausea, difficulty swallowing, or chest burning sensation) and they could not tell me that Acid Reflux was definitely the cause. I do not smoke cigarettes.
177337 tn?1310059899 RNRita - I'm worried about going off because it really did help. I used to use Gaviscon but it stopped working. I have been on Protonix for quite a while so maybe I will stop and see if I can have luck with Gaviscon and Tums again. Did the pvc's stop right away as soon as you went off it? WIsconsin2007 - I don't see any literature with palps as a side effect either and my cardio gave them to me and told me it wouldn't bother my heart. But I have to wonder....
Avatar n tn My dentist has told me that I have a bite problem an the grinding pressure on my molars has caused bone loss and gum recession. I went to a periodontist a few years ago, and he agreed with the assessment of the bite problem. We discussed braces, but his concern was the the bone loss was such that once moved, the teeth might not set. So we have not done anything other than frequent cleaning, and a night guard.
Avatar n tn I have been using Protonix for almost a year now and it's worked great to help my Gastritis but I noticed something. Since taking it, my period comes later than it used to and for less time. I am a bit worried, is everything ok?
Avatar m tn Hospice care started this week. Protonix given daily - is it needed? Asymptomatic and no hx of gastric reflux.
