Are these products safe for people with decompensated liver? 2- I am 192 Ibs now, down from 200, @ 6' 2", and would like to return to my 200 weight. 1.5 grms x 200 weight goal and maintanance requires 300 grams of protein daily. Is that much protein safe for cirrhotics/decomp liver to even try reaching this goal? I have been trying to keep high carb/caloric with low sodium up to now.

Avatar n tn Stop eating red meat; eat fish, foods with fiber and fruits... if you're sold on protein products, go with Soy Protein; such as Twinlab's Vege Fuel...great for Mass gain and lots of Aminos. 0.8gm per Kilogram of bodyweight. 2.2#/kg (i.e. 150# ÷ 2.2 = 68kg x0.8 = 54.6gm of protein [or about 4 scoops of protein powder] ) Most protein powders offer about 25-30gms per serving.

If you are having trouble eating try protein supplement shakes or even carnation instant breakfast drink powders. As long as your doctor says that your baby looks healthy and is meeting the development markers on time then everything should be fine. I have found that in the third trimester I am having to remind myself to eat since the room in my stomach is less and less.

Avatar f tn I am restricted to a gluten free, dairy free, sugar free diet so gaining weight is not easy for me. I buy a protein bar that is safe for me by the case from Whole Foods but I can't survive just on protein bars. They are 240 calories per bar so they help quite a bit. I even tried Carnation VHC (very high calorie) drinks which come in a can and you can only order them on line but they were awful and they have since discontinued them.

But maybe you can find a formula that you can just take as a supplement not a meal replacement. I can imagine Ensure would get pretty yucky after awhile. If I get to my vitamin store ill ask the owner. Yes I know it has to be liver friendly. I'm stage 4 cirrhotic. I'm trying to figure out just what I can eat.
Avatar m tn Be careful with sports drinks, the might help you gain weight but they contain either a lot of fat and sugar or harmful sugar substitutes and lots of artificial ingredients that can be harmful as well. Eating added protein in your meals and weight training will add muscle, but if you just want to gain any kind of weight eat a lot of simple carbs. They will turn quickly to sugar and add fat to your body and are unhealthy, but you will gain weight.

Avatar f tn There are a lot of good protein powders on the market that are not meant for "muscle building", but protein is the building block for muscle and muscle burns fat. Exercise also helps build muscle, but if you do the right ones, you won't "bulk up". I often use, both, Greek yogurt and protein powder in my smoothies. The yogurt gives you and extra amount of protein, plus calcium, vitamin B12, etc.
