89592 tn?1391274422 I was dxd in 2012 with cirrhosis after the previous gastro found 2 grade 2 non bldg varices. I am on 100 mgs propranolol am and 100 mgs propranolol pm. Now I have a new gastro who has mentioned scheduling an egd and suggested if have varices, he would like to band them. My last EGD was done in 2012. I have rheum arth along with sjogrens which does a number on my throat anyway along with the other overlapping r/a issues. I have not had anything that would indicate a bleed.
Avatar f tn A friend of mine took a propranolol overdose approx. 1 month ago. 3 weeks after had a physical and his enzymes were elevated alkaline phosphatase 201 ast- 52 alt- 115. What does this mean? His MD gave him a B12 injection and a script for folate. He has not revealed to his MD that he had taken this overdose. He is going for a follow-up tomorrow and tell the doctor. He does not drink and has never taken drugs, untilt his event.
29837 tn?1414534648 Hepatologist suggested my doctor put me on something to control Esophageal Varices, which after a test, were discovered in me. The severity is said to be medium. I've don’t some reading with contradicting beliefs from various doctors and clinical trials. However, all doctors seem to agree that a beta blocker like Atenolol is necessary for a long term use. Just want to know if any of you are on this treatment at 25mg per day.
2203249 tn?1338990446 It is generally recommended that patients with cirrhosis undergo elective endoscopic screening for varices at the time of diagnosis and periodically thereafter if no or small varices are detected. If screening EGD reveals appreciable esophageal varices, a size classification should be assigned. Different size classification systems have been used over the years; however, a recent consensus meeting proposed that varices be categorized in only two grades, small and large.
89592 tn?1391274422 seeing so much blood is scary. I am on propranolol. I have gr 2 varices in the esophagus that do not need banding. No gastric varix. hemoglobin is okay. I have had bleeding prob once a month or more...sometimes light and sometimes heavy. the frequent loose bms are causing me to bleed....i never bleed unless I have many bms.
Avatar m tn My husband has had to have esophageal varices banding done twice. The first time he was an Alcoholic and almost bled to death. He was immediately banded. This 2nd time was a couple months ago and they went in to check the bands and banded off some more varices. He has been cleaned of alcohol and drugs for 4 years now, Praise God! My question is, when it comes to the point of esophageal banding, is your liver very bad off? We had to go see a surgeon today because he has gallstones.
Avatar f tn On Halloween this year, he was admitted to his transplant hospital with bleeding esophageal varices. They were grade 1-2 found on endoscopy after his diagnosis. He had the banding done and is now on meds to decrease portal pressure. His MD said hes not appropriate for the transplant list. Prior to this episode he was diagnosed with compensated mild cirrhosis. His child - Pugh score places him in class a. Since the bleeding, I have been reading that technically he has decompensated cirrhosis.
1008841 tn?1293598960 I already take Spironolatone 100 mg, furosemide 10mg, propranolol 10mg, which she not taking me off of. I have Thrombosis in my right portal vein. But, my BP is pretty low usually and my pulse rate is already so slow that I'm afraid sometimes my heart will just stop. But, what I really wondered about is that BP Med.that I've heard actually helps reverse Fibrosis in the liver. I thought I might suggest that to her but I can't remember the name. Can anyone help me.
Avatar m tn I have cirrhosis and was losing a lot of muscle mass because of it. I work out now most days and do 40 minutes on an eliptical machine and a small amount of bodybuilding and have gained back my mass plus some! I don't overdo it as Hector suggests and I am on a beta blocker (propranolol 80-mg twice daily) so my heart rate doesn't get up more than about 105. I have esophageal varices so keeping my heart rate lower is much safer as he also states.
Avatar f tn Hi. Thank you for writing. Note that a beta-blocker treatment will not stop or prevent varices. Varices are a complication of cirrhosis and can only be "cured" when a person no longer has cirrhosis. The good news is that varices and the portal hypertension can usually be controlled (reducing the blood flow and pressure) with use of a beta-blocker.
Avatar m tn For a "nice" extensive treatment" of varices size, color, mortality, tec. whose pics some may find offensive. Maybe this will help make people treat before progressing to cirrhosis! ;-) (Not to be viewed while eating!). 1116669 tn?1269143266 since portal hypertension causes varices can you reverse varices by reversing portal hypertension Angiogenesis is a biological process where new blood vessels grow from ones already in place CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide new insights into how angiogenesis regulates portal hypertension by demonstrating that the maintenance of increased portal pressure, hyperkinetic circulation, splanchnic neovascularization, and portosystemic collateralization is regulated by VEGF and PDGF in portal hyperten
89592 tn?1391274422 I do have portal hypertension and am taking propranolol. Had gr 2 non bleeding esophageal varices that cc banded..my local gastro didnt think they needed banding he said they were small..but drs at CC said they were large and they band all gr 2 varices as a preventative. I was dxd with cirrhosis in 2012. My heart rate with 110 mgs prop in am and 110 in pm is around 65-70. I wish I could get it lower. My only issue is with the rectal variceal bleeding.. or hems...
Avatar m tn How quickly can someone with hep-c go from no varices to varices? Are varices an indicator as to the stage of cirrhosis?
Avatar m tn Varices form lower down in your esophagus where it joins the stomach. You would not see those in your throat. If you are concerned about varies, talk with your GI doc to see if a gastroscopy in indicated.
Avatar m tn Such as ascites (fluid build up in the abdomen), swelling of the lower legs, ankles and feet, bursting varices (vomiting blood), Hepatic encephalopathy (forgetfulness, confusion, getting lost in places you know, stupor or coma)? Do you take any drugs to treat these complications of cirrhosis? Diurectics, Lactulose, Xifaxan, Nadolol or Propranolol? If you haven't had these complications you are still healthy enough to still treat your hepatitis C.
Avatar f tn Has anyone tried PROPRANOLOL for prevention of Migraines? I have struggled with headaches almost every day & Migraines aprox every 7-10 days for the last 10 years. Feverfew has helped but they now seem to be getting worst so I was thinking of asking my GP if I could try Propranolol.
4155003 tn?1351614311 ive bin on propranolol for about 12weeks & weaned myself down to 10ml every other day, i took 10ml propranolol 52hours ago & not going to take another one as im ready to stop. when will it be fully out my system?
Avatar f tn I have been given propranolol to take as I have had continuous palpitations since monday and my heartrate has randomly shooting up in the 100's (not related to posture!!) These will also help with my bp, it has been creeping up. I have had these in the past but was more recently on bisoprolol. Which is more common for POTS symptoms? I was in A&E last night and back at my GP's this morning. I have been refered back to the cardiologist who is going to see me in november.
Avatar f tn I've been taking Propranolol for high blood pressure and tachycardia(10mg at 8am, 2pm, and 8pm) for about 18 days now, and four days ago I woke up feeling quite dizzy. Since then it seemed to get better, but now I feel lethargic, dizzy, and generally unwell. Is it my drug? Note: I'm a 15-year-old male.
