Propranolol for public speaking anxiety

Common Questions and Answers about Propranolol for public speaking anxiety

inderal

Avatar f tn Sometimes doctors will only prescribe the beta blocker (propranolol) or the xanax or lorazepam for just before the performance or public speaking. My guess is that you do so much of it that he feels that you would be better off with it in your system so that if you are in a sticky situation the medication will do the job and help you through. Don't be surprised if at first you feel a little tired or drowsy when you start taking the propranolol, this will go away in a couple of days.
1243620 tn?1274790697 Does anyone take propranolol for anxiety and panic attacks? I've had crippling anxiety for my whole life. Antidepressants increase it to the point where I'm in such a state I almost pass out from hypervenitlating. I've heard propranolol is good for this, and is effective.
Avatar n tn Well, its most common use is for anxiety - which is fairly common for people with ADHD. You can read more about it here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propranolol What I don't understand is why your doctor didn't explain this to you. Especially if you are prone to anxiety, the not knowing only makes it worse.
Avatar n tn Will any doctor prescribe propranolol to me for need based public speaking anxiety, or is the only place the psychiatrist?
Avatar n tn If the same doctor prescribed both these medications for you, then you can trust it's safe to take them together.......but you must read the labels! Sometimes "together" doesn't mean "at the same time." Some meds need to be taken with food and some on an empty stomach, some in the morning and some at night. If you have any questions about how to take these meds, call your doctor or pharmacist for the correct dosing schedule.
Avatar f tn I have had severe social anxiety for 2 decades. I was prescribed Inderal for my extreme fear of public speaking. I was prescribed Inderal for the public speaking and tried to deliver my speech, it was a disaster, racing thoughts, mind went blank, voice quivered, hands shook, jelly legs, etc. I may not have been on the right dose, because I have always had a very high tolerance. My question is what is the highest dose allowed.
Avatar n tn It is far worse when in a social situation or when doing a task like cutting veggies or writing, not all the time, but sometimes. The typical treatment for this is propranolol (a beta blocker) and if there is anxiety along with it, then clonazepam too. The propranolol will help with the shakes and also anxiety, but if the anxiety is more pronounced and/or with panic attacks then my guess would be that the doctor would prescribe clonazepam with it.
Avatar f tn First, don't take this if you're on medication targeting serotonin receptors, such as an ssri or snri. Assuming you're not on medication, the answer is, maybe, maybe not. The same answer you'd get if you went on medication. Sometimes things work, sometimes they don't. Second, 5-HTP isn't a vitamin -- it's an amino acid, a metabolite of L-tryptophan, which along with co-factors such as B6 (which is a vitamin) us used by the body to manufacture serotonin.
Avatar m tn Hey, like mammo adviced you, there's ways to get help for you social anxiety. I've suffered from social anxiety for years and I didn't want to do any presentations at school at all coz I would start to shake and sweat and my face would be all red. The a doctor gave me propranolol which is a safe med (doesn't have any bad side effects) that aliviates all the symptoms.
Avatar f tn s a beta-blocker mostly used to lower blood pressure but sometimes used for performance anxiety situations like stage fright, exam taking, job interviews etc. He's used it with other patients experiencing ED. I also do take the beta-blocker pindolol which has kept my BP at 125/70 for years. Shrink says very occasional and use of propranolol on top of pindolol should not be a problem but I still have concerns which I will run by my GP.
Avatar n tn I am now taking propranolol for my anxiety, and it is doing wonders. Been on it for 4 months now and have not had a panic attack in that time. Not only that, but my hands don't shake like a 90 year old man anymore, and I feel much more at peace. Only problem is it is messing with my asthma that I have had my whole life, 28 year old male by the way.
Avatar f tn s really affecting you, then you can ask your doctor for a low dose, short acting anxiety medication to take prior to speaking. Make sure you try it a couple of days before so you know that it's not going to make you too tired. For me, the more I did it, the easier it got. Plus, learning how nervous others were gave me more confidence to get up there and speak to everyone. Don't put the pressure on yourself to be "perfect" at this, because even the best still mess up.
Avatar f tn Even tho I am asthmatic I was put on 40mg propranolol daily, it changed my life, I was able to queue up in public places etc without the fear of fainting. Anyway 5 years later, 3 weeks ago I experienced sleep paralysis for the 1st time. I suffered the hallucinations and died basically then fully woke up. I was a little shaken but the rest of the day I had dizziness and palpatations, of the kind K had before being on propranolol.
Avatar f tn Will taking a small amount of Xanax help with calming nerves for public speaking? Taking a small amount like 0.25 ?
Avatar m tn I dont avoid engaging in public speaking,i try speaking in public the least chance i get but very short statements.I did some few reading about beta blockers and i saw that it help relieve anxiety . i once complained to my Dr but He says is nothing to worry about.I was given vitamin B6 and Magnesium combined for tremors. If Beta blockers help with anxiety why does my heart races, voice and hand still shake in public activities like speaking and suturing infront of my classmates.
Avatar f tn I know propranolol is used for PTSD...but what should I ask for in the pharmacy and what is the dosage? Are there any serious effect if taken without proper knowledge?
Avatar m tn Haha, no that's not much potassium. A banana has a lot more than that. :-) My doc put me on propranolol "as needed" at first, and I rarely took it. I'm on 25mg Metroprolol ER now and it definitely reduced my resting heartrate to something in the low 50's. It did not stop my PVCs but rather just made them less forceful so I felt them less. Low dosage beta blockers (I'm guessing your propranolol is low dosage as well) are pretty safe.
Avatar m tn There are self-help books available that will teach you many tips and tricks to deal with this anxiety. If possible, take a Public Speaking class.........I did and it was the best thing I'd done for myself at that time. I still got some anxiety beforehand, but I had learned so many ways to deal with it, believe it or not, public speaking actually became fun. One of the most important things I learned was to be totally prepared.
Avatar f tn So, I started researching it and have found that it is not generally used for someone with generalized anxiety but usually for those that have anxiety in certain situations. I wake up and go to sleep with a lump of anxiety in my chest. I also read that it is not good to use regularly for someone with asthma. Any suggestions or feedback on your experiences with this?
Avatar f tn Hi all - new here. Just curious if anyone else has serious speaking problems (along with everything else?). I stutter and get confused on my words...
Avatar m tn I used to take a slow-release Propranolol 80 mg every day, which caused severe tiredness and extreme fatigue, to the point that I was not able to think straight and sometimes could not even get out of bed. Apparently, Propranolol also inhibits the ability for you to burn fat, not to mention gastrointestinal issues. Depression is also significantly higher when taking Propranolol.
709686 tn?1277432159 Beta blockers have been prescribed for anxiety for a long time. As someone above mentioned, they are especially effective in social anxiety situations...ie before speaking in front of a large group, etc. In that scenario, a person takes one about 30 min-1 hour before the event. A regular dosing of these types of meds (Inderal is one that is commonly Rxed) can also be very useful in combatting anxiety on a daily basis.
Avatar f tn Propanolol is given for a variety of reasons to include anxiety, tremors, migraines, high BP, angina and others. It can cause some odd feelings when first starting it. I don't understand this being prescribed to you for your symptoms. The Codamol is a pain reliever, but it soundsa like you needed an antibiotic. I doubt that you would be feeling any effects after two weeks from these two drugs but we never know.
Avatar f tn Even speaking something like an opinion on the internet can drive me on edge, same as speaking in person in public as well. Just a lot of excessive anxiety, it seems that I have. And it takes over my life. I hate it, so much. I get scared. And I overthink a lot of small conversations and actions that I did in front of others. Everyday. I see a therapist and I plan on bringing this up to her. Maybe she'll have me get on meds.
Avatar m tn I've been suffering from anxiety for many years now. I'm on Xanax and Aurorix. l take 0.125 Xanax only at night and 150 mg of Aurorix twice a day. This is after the discussion with my doctor. My anxiety is very much controlled. However, my anxiety becomes very bad when I become the center of attention. I dread public speaking but it can't be avoided sometimes. Do people with anxiety disorder dread the same thing as I do? Is it because I'm taking too little dose of Xanax?
Avatar m tn You are most definitely not alone in your fear of public speaking. If I'm not mistaken, I think it's at the top of the list for people's worst fears. If I get called upon to speak to a group of people, I can feel my face turn beet red, I start to sweat like a hog with no waller to wallow in, I KNOW I'm about to wet my knickers and I shake like I've got ants in my pants, which would be my wet knickers!
Avatar n tn Do research on it it is used for actors for stage fright /public speaking. Has a lot of off label uses for anxiety. Also if u feel one coming on try controlling your breath deep breaths in through the nose out through the mouth sometimes this can just stop it in its tracks before it even starts .
