Propranolol for migraine

Common Questions and Answers about Propranolol for migraine

inderal

Avatar n tn Hi, Thank you for your question. Usually, propranolol (beta blocker) is suggested for prophylactic treatment of migraine. Acute or prompt treatment require over the counter pain killers and triptans. Avoiding the triggering factors of cluster headache might help you in order to prevent its recurrence. Hope it helps.
Avatar f tn I have been feeling lightheaded, short of breath, arms feel heavy especially when i raise them up to shoulder level, head feels weird, no migraine pain. I have a history of migraines for about twenty years. I quit smoking 7 months ago, and started propranolol 20 mg once a day. I gained 30 pounds. My whole body is sore and Im having episodes where my upper body and sometimes legs just feel so heavy and tired I feel like Im going to pass out.
Avatar m tn He was diagnosed with abdominal migraine and put on propranolol (taken daily to prevent migraine), and it worked very well. We weaned him off the propranolol after a year or so, and a year after that the nausea came back. Now he's been nauseous for 8 weeks straight and has missed a month of school. Propranolol is not supposed to stop a migraine in progress, just prevent them; we tried putting him back on during this episode but his pulse dropped too low.
778037 tn?1377986200 Hi, Inderal is indicated for the prophylaxis of common migraine headache. The efficacy of propranolol in the treatment of a migraine attack that has started has not been established, and propranolol is not indicated for such use. The initial dose is 80 mg Inderal daily in divided doses. The usual effective dose range is 160 mg to 240 mg per day. The dosage may be increased gradually to achieve optimum migraine prophylaxis.
1125820 tn?1265284446 Yes, most migraine medications do work well for most people. But, not everyone has the same success with all medications. For acute treatment of migraine headaches, first line treatment is triptans. There are currently 7 triptans on the market, plus one triptan that is also mixed with an NSAID called Naproxen. I believe that fast acting triptans are the best in most situations because they work the fastest. Fast acting triptans come in orally disintegrating tablets or nasal sprays.
Avatar f tn can propranolol be used for migraine prophylaxis in a patient with heart rate of 60 and family history of diabetes
Avatar f tn hi i am a 37 year old mother of 5 and have always experienced migraine for as long as i remember.i have also had other health problems especially stomache pain and am currently on propanalol which seemed to be helping a lot with the headaches for some reason.however the headaches have returned and my head constantly hurts especially on the left and at the base of the head and my left pupil has been enlarged several times.my daughter even noticfd it when i went to visit.
Avatar n tn Why were you taking it? For your heart or for migraine? If you were taking it for your heart it could increase your risk for angina or heart attack. you might need to try a different heart med.
Avatar m tn Hi, sure sounds like it could be your version of a migraine. It can be a bit different for each individual. Propranolol (Inderal) is a good preventive, and a variety of triptan drugs are good abortive drugs. Ask your neuro to try you on some new things. Keep in mind that everyone is different in their tolerances and reactions to meds. But, there's enough out there that something should help.
Avatar f tn For two months know ive had a throbbing headache and it wont go away and its doesnt feel better with pills....
Avatar n tn The ablation was for AVT. As soon as they were finished with the ablation, before they rolled me out of the cath lab, I started getting a migraine (blurry vision, followed by headache from hell, nausea, vomiting). Before my heart ablation I would get a migraine 3-4 times a year. I have been getting them since i was a teenager (I am now 34). Since the surgery, I have gotten 1-2 migraine headaches EVERY DAY (I'm on day 5 since my surgery).
Avatar f tn To date I hvae been on three medications for my headaches (meloxicam, zomig and propranolol) but nothing seems to help. My headache has lasted for a month straight but it seems to be getting worse. My family doctor seems to think that I have sinus, tension and migraine headaches. The pain and sensitivity to light has become so bad that I have to sit in a dark and not move all night after a day at school. The pain is mainly behind my eye and on my nose bridge, then it spreeds to my forehead.
Avatar n tn sometimes Tenex is also used in conjunction with stimulants to help control ADHD symptoms....first I have heard of inderal (brand name for propranolol) being used but makes sense...Always to remember to ask your doctor any questions about your meds and health care...the only stupid questions are the ones not asked....Also beta blockers are also given to help control migraines to regulate fluxs in BP...not because too high but slight changes can trigger migraines...
1868815 tn?1412541757 If you have any weaknes or imbalance in your body the migraine will surely pray on it. For me it is enough with a simple cold for my migraine to try to attack me. Amitriptyline should also help you sleep when you reach higher doses. Be patient and keep fighting. I know what a horrible disease this is.
Avatar n tn These include ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or aspirin to help relieve mild migraines and combinations of acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine specifically meant for moderate migraine attacks (Excedrin Migraine). The drugs of choice however are triptans such as Sumatriptan, rizatriptan, naratriptan, zolmitriptan, almotriptan, frovatriptan and eletriptan. You may need to try which of these medications works best for you, in consultation with your doctor.
Avatar f tn I have Chronic Migraines for the past 4 or 5 years. A Migraine that never goes away, I have tried several medications for it but nothing helps. I have a small cyst at the right side base of my brain, and was wondering that could be possibly a trigger in causing migraine.
1243620 tn?1274790697 Does anyone take propranolol for anxiety and panic attacks? I've had crippling anxiety for my whole life. Antidepressants increase it to the point where I'm in such a state I almost pass out from hypervenitlating. I've heard propranolol is good for this, and is effective.
768044 tn?1294223436 In the Migraines and Headaches Community, tia1977 posted a question asking what the best prescription for migraine prevention was. I think that this is a very interesting question that we probably all want to know the answer to and I still think that there is no simple answer since we are all so individual and unique... BUT! I remembered an article I read called "Evidence-Based Guidelines for Migraine Headache in the Primary Care".
Avatar f tn Ask your Dr if propranolol would be an option for you. It's technically a blood pressure med but is also used for a migraine preventative. It's been a life safer for me. I have had chronic migraines since age 5 and they got really bad during this pregnancy.
Avatar n tn I have had what they say is a Migraine for 87 days straight now. It’s not like everyone else’s migraines though as I do not have light sensitivity, sound sensitivity or nausea. Doctors have tried doing the cocktail through IV x 3 and never worked, tried zomig, tramadol, Botox injections, steroids, propranolol and the list goes on. I avoid pills as much as possible as I’m aware this could cause a rebound headache. When it comes on its fast and hard! No easing into it.
1285921 tn?1271718059 I have suffered from migraine headaches for about 13 yrs now. 5 months ago I injured my back. I have allot of other pain issues as well including two bulging discs in my neck, fused ankle arthritis in my knee, tendinitis in my knee, bursitis around my ischial process, and I also suffer from peripheral neuropathy. Since the injury, even tho it is healed I have been experiencing migraines and other sever headaches, approximately 4 a week.
Avatar f tn I also do take the beta-blocker pindolol which has kept my BP at 125/70 for years. Shrink says very occasional and use of propranolol on top of pindolol should not be a problem but I still have concerns which I will run by my GP. I actually did receive a call from my pharmacy pointing out the risk of a low BP problem. So...I am wondering if anyone has used propranolol or has an educated opinion on both its use in ED and possible interactions.
Avatar f tn Migraines are caused by inflammation which is caused by triggers. There is no migraine preventative made yet. The preventatives are all for other conditions and happen to help some people. None of them helped me so I dont bother. Tripans are the only True migraine drug. Try Relpax and Keep imitrex. I rotate between both but do not take within 24 hours of one another. always have ibuprofen which is for inflammation.
