89592 tn?1391274422 I was dxd in 2012 with cirrhosis after the previous gastro found 2 grade 2 non bldg varices. I am on 100 mgs propranolol am and 100 mgs propranolol pm. Now I have a new gastro who has mentioned scheduling an egd and suggested if have varices, he would like to band them. My last EGD was done in 2012. I have rheum arth along with sjogrens which does a number on my throat anyway along with the other overlapping r/a issues. I have not had anything that would indicate a bleed.
Avatar m tn i am so much worried about the varices............................i want to ask if varices can be seen by an ultrasound and either if they are treatable or not................
Avatar f tn He does not drink and has never taken drugs, untilt his event. This was not his prescription of propranolol, it was a family memebers. can this be drug induced hepatitis, can it be reversed, or is it usually permanent damage. If in fact this is drug induced hepatitis, does the dmage continue, or did it stop after the drugs were out of his system? Thanks for any help.........
29837 tn?1414534648 I understand there are some risks, but that the result of lowering blood pressure and heartbeats can help reduce the development of a more serious Varices problem, which in some cases can cause death form unstoppable internal bleeding. Anyone?
2203249 tn?1338990446 Treatment Practice guidelines have recently been updated regarding the prevention and management of gastroesophageal varices and variceal hemorrhage in cirrhosis. Treatment of varices is best considered in three distinct phases: prevention of the first variceal hemorrhage (primary prophylaxis), control of acute hemorrhage, an prevention of a second hemorrhage in a patient who has already bled (secondary prophylaxis).
89592 tn?1391274422 I was told I have impressive rectal varices. These bleed quite a bit..bright red, dripping into toilet, and on tp. I have been to the er many times and they end up sending me home. It always stops spontaneously. I have had drs tell me about sclerotherapy though there is not dr here that performs it....my gastro mentioned TIPS down the road possibly. My meld is 7, platelets around 140,000 Inr and ptt fine. I dont quite know where to turn.
Avatar m tn Propanolol is used to lower portal hypertension and prevent bursting and bleeding varices. Just like banding prevents large varices from bleeding. The two go hand in hand. Since he has been banded so many times he is likely to vomit or defecate blood as his disease progresses. A bleed can be life-threatening. If his is alone he could pass out from the loss of blood and not be able to help himself. If it happens he must go to an ER ASAP.
89592 tn?1391274422 In patients with medium/large varices that have not bled and are not at the highest risk of hemorrhage (Child A patients and no red signs), nonselective -blockers (propranolol, nadolol) are preferred and EVL (banding) should be considered in patients with contraindications or intolerance or non-compliance to-blockers (Class I, Level A).' Your doctor is not treating you according to the standard guidelines. Is this a hepatologist at a transplant center?
Avatar f tn Portal Hypertension) When this blood seeks another route to the heart the next veins are those that line the Stomach and Esophagus. When these veins become enlarged and swollen they are called Varices, and are very susceptible to rupture. The TIPS or DIPS procedure bypasses these veins alleviating Pressure in the Liver and the Varices.
1008841 tn?1293598960 I already take Spironolatone 100 mg, furosemide 10mg, propranolol 10mg, which she not taking me off of. I have Thrombosis in my right portal vein. But, my BP is pretty low usually and my pulse rate is already so slow that I'm afraid sometimes my heart will just stop. But, what I really wondered about is that BP Med.that I've heard actually helps reverse Fibrosis in the liver. I thought I might suggest that to her but I can't remember the name. Can anyone help me.
Avatar f tn Hi. Thank you for writing. Note that a beta-blocker treatment will not stop or prevent varices. Varices are a complication of cirrhosis and can only be "cured" when a person no longer has cirrhosis. The good news is that varices and the portal hypertension can usually be controlled (reducing the blood flow and pressure) with use of a beta-blocker.
Avatar m tn ·Grade 1 - Small straight varices ·Grade 2 - Enlarged tortuous varices occupying less than one third of the lumen ·Grade 3 - Large coil-shaped varices occupying more than one third of the lumen The varices also are inspected for red wheals, which are dilated intra-epithelial veins under tension and which carry a significant risk for bleeding. The grading of varices and identification of red wheals by endoscopy predict a patient's bleeding risk, on which treatment is based.
3097131 tn?1357084881 Increased pressure in the portal vein causes large veins (varices) to develop across the esophagus and stomach to bypass the blockage. The varices become fragile and can bleed easily. What causes portal hypertension? The most common cause of portal hypertension is cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver. Cirrhosis results from the healing of a liver injury caused by hepatitis, alcohol abuse, or other causes of liver damage.
Avatar f tn I've taken either omeprazole or propranolol for gas and prevention of variceal bleeding due to portal hypertension on and off for the last couple of years with no ill effects. I had not taken the omeprazole for awhile but when I started treatment with sovaldi and olysio I started taking it again because I was having a huge problem with gas and pressure. It helps me enormously.
Avatar f tn I have a history of migraines for about twenty years. I quit smoking 7 months ago, and started propranolol 20 mg once a day. I gained 30 pounds. My whole body is sore and Im having episodes where my upper body and sometimes legs just feel so heavy and tired I feel like Im going to pass out. Had a Head CT, Head and Neck CTA, CBC, EKG all were normal. Is it related to migraine? ER doctor said it is anxiety. Oh I stopped celexa five months ago because I was extremely fatigued.
89592 tn?1391274422 I do have portal hypertension and am taking propranolol. Had gr 2 non bleeding esophageal varices that cc banded..my local gastro didnt think they needed banding he said they were small..but drs at CC said they were large and they band all gr 2 varices as a preventative. I was dxd with cirrhosis in 2012. My heart rate with 110 mgs prop in am and 110 in pm is around 65-70. I wish I could get it lower. My only issue is with the rectal variceal bleeding.. or hems...
Avatar f tn I read that too much potassium doesn’t work well while on propranolol because while on it the body does not excrete potassium as normally and you can get levels that are too high. Could this be the cause or is there an adjustment period while taking propranolol? I’ve been drinking pomegranate juice and cherry juice, 4 oz of each, with breakfast this past week. These are very high in potassium. Something is making me feel very strange and I’m hoping it wears off.
Avatar m tn Varices form lower down in your esophagus where it joins the stomach. You would not see those in your throat. If you are concerned about varies, talk with your GI doc to see if a gastroscopy in indicated.
Avatar m tn Does anyone know how propranolol effects exercise? I do triathlon and train using a heart rate monitor. I am wondering if I would be able to progress athletically given my heart rate would be lowered substantially?
Avatar m tn Such as ascites (fluid build up in the abdomen), swelling of the lower legs, ankles and feet, bursting varices (vomiting blood), Hepatic encephalopathy (forgetfulness, confusion, getting lost in places you know, stupor or coma)? Do you take any drugs to treat these complications of cirrhosis? Diurectics, Lactulose, Xifaxan, Nadolol or Propranolol? If you haven't had these complications you are still healthy enough to still treat your hepatitis C.
3122467 tn?1342138836 To deal with it, I take a beta blocker, propranolol, and it works beautifully. Not only does it take care of the akathisia it also treats anxiety. Once i ran out of propranolol because it hadn't arrived from the mail order pharmacy and the akathisia came back so I know two things... I still have it and propranolol stops it.
