Avatar f tn She had me just stop propranolol and start metoprolol, been experiencing shakiness, occassional pvcs, headache, nausea, pulse still 45 - low 60s at rest and with exertion 70-90. Should she have tapered propranolol or will the metoprolol block the more serious withdrawal symptoms ie: HTN, chest pain ect.
Avatar n tn Non-selective beta-blockers, such as propranolol act on both types of receptors, in both heart and lungs. Propranolol and other medicines in its class are capable of evoking bronchospasm in people with asthma. Metoprolol is selective, but not entirely so; thus, asthma worsens in some people given this “selective” medicine and you may be one of them. Your doctor may have prescribed the metoprolol for both relief of the syncope and treatment of your hypertension.

Avatar m tn I did 2 days on 40 mg of Propranolol and I had the same side-effects than on the metoprolol... and I guess it's not side-effects but anxiety symptoms that I experience. Also when I return on the Propranolol for 2 days at a bigger dose, my blood pressure and pulse rate wasn't under control at all, heart rate was in the high 80 sit at rest and 150 and more just walking in the house...
10610562 tn?1411418414 So I told my doctor about the wonderful help the medication gave me, but the terrible effect on my breathing. I told her that I wanted to try Metoprolol, and she said that would be a good idea since it is a selective bb, focusing on the heart. I have been on the Metoprolol for a couple of months now and it just isn't working near as good as the Propranolol. My hands are shaky, my anxiety is not being reduced, and I am always extremely tired and fatigued.
Avatar f tn Hello my name is April and I have recently been diagnosed with PVC and was prescribed metoprolol I wanted to know if anyone has taken this for there PVC and if so did it work?
Avatar f tn The only plan for now is to try the TENS vagal stimulation (which he was fine with), take Propranolol for sleeping, and call him if it gets worse. The next med to try is Sotolol. For now I am just going to wait and see. I'm tired of the meds. He thinks it could be from increased vagal tone but the Norpace doubled my SVT. I honestly don't know what to do. The meds are all worse than the heart issue. The ablations have been a failure.
Avatar f tn I have a beta blocker for use when needed, but that one is propranolol and not metoprolol (slow release). Propranolol works better towards anxiety, stress and other factors that may trigger a rapid heart rhythm. From time to time (generally stressful times) I can take 12,5 or 25 mg metoprolol in addition. But I guess this is something that your doctor should decide as we are all different.
Avatar m tn My heart rate remains a little high and i want to take propranolol in a very small dose like 8 mg a day in divoded doses. I am scared that my bp would lower and cause probs. Can i take it???
Avatar n tn can anyone tell me side effects of atenolol as i have been on it for 6 yrs and have severe pain in feet and knees tendons in legs and ankels to the extent of if any pressure applied to these parts for length of time i cannot walk for days until pain and swelling subsides.
Avatar f tn I have been taking propranolol for 12 years and changed to metoprolol within the last month. 25mg is the lowest amount and it has been helpful for me. I did notice my hands shaking more in the beginning but that has calmed down. I am in the process of getting an appointment with a endocronologist for the thyroid problems, just had a biopsy done on one of the many nodules. good luck spiritflow This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn We often use medications called beta-blockers (metoprolol, propranolol, atenolol are examples) to help in such situations.
Avatar f tn I have been given propranolol to take as I have had continuous palpitations since monday and my heartrate has randomly shooting up in the 100's (not related to posture!!) These will also help with my bp, it has been creeping up. I have had these in the past but was more recently on bisoprolol. Which is more common for POTS symptoms? I was in A&E last night and back at my GP's this morning. I have been refered back to the cardiologist who is going to see me in november.
Avatar f tn Sounds like anxiety is the problem here, which can cause both tachycardia and PVCs/PACs. We often tend to get anxious about things that we can't control. We can't control our hearts. But if we take good care of our hearts, they will keep on beating for several decades :-) PVCs and tachycardia (within normal limits) can not harm your heart and you can safely go back to not paying attention to your heart. Just let it be there, just like any other organ.
Avatar f tn I have used Toprolol and Generic Metoprolol and Atenolol. I like the Atenolol best and take 25 mg every 12 hours. The generics are very low cost. My long term experience with selective beta blocker is they have some impact on my blood pressure, but only at high levels. I have taken Metoprolol at as high as 100 mg twice a day.
Avatar n tn I could about be an example of what if you take a LOT and see what happens. At one point I was on 300mg metoprolol and 200mg propranolol. It did not cause any increase in palpitations, but I still had lots of breakthrough SVT. I would still get rates to 200 most every day and had almost no blood pressure. Maybe if the metoprolol doesn't do it for you, your md will try a different med because rates into the 40s could easily give you problems.
Avatar f tn I tried every medication they gave me metoprolol, propranolol, atenolol, etc. until they finally hit on a new medication by Bystolic! I hit the jackpot, it was like night and day! I take 20 mg in the morning with 125 mg of magnesium taurate then 5mg of Norvasc for HTN then take 10 mg of by Bystolic at night with 125 mg of magnesium taurate in between I take .5 Xanax in the morning and at night I have not had one PVC in the last three years I feel like a different human being!
Avatar f tn I took it when I was pregnant and it helped a lot but now that I've relapsed without being pregnant it made my POTS symptoms much worse and it took my cardiologist a year before he sent me to an electrophysiologist that prescribed propranolol 10mg twice a day and I've been taking it for 4 months now and I can say that it keeps almost all of my POTS symptoms at bay except for the digestive issues.
Avatar n tn Some beta blockers are able to cross the blood-brain barrier and some are not. Propranolol and metoprolol are fairly able to do so, but Atenolol is, as far as I know, not. Which means, propranolol and metoprolol can provide more cognitive side effects (forgetfullness, confusion, mood disturbances, etc.) than Atenolol.
Avatar f tn Like I will be sitting or at rest and get up and it will just race. Usually I chew on a Xanax or Propranolol and that gets it under control somewhat but it's still scary. Last week it happened I was sitting on the couch and I got up and my heart went from like 80bm to probably around 150bpm in a few seconds. I took a half Xanax and Propranolol and it helped a bit but ever since I've been having these unpredictable symptoms. My question is, is this something new?
Avatar f tn The cardiologist I saw recently took me off Propranolol which never helped my fast pulse much..he put me on 25mg Metoprolol twice a day. I do notice a difference on it. Overall heart rate is slower and although I've had a couple more incidents of fast heart rate for no apparent reason, the number of incidents has greatly improved. So heres my question. Now that I'm on a higher dose beta blocker, & a better one (Metoprolol) can I start having a bit of morning coffee again?
Avatar n tn Because of it being sotatolol, I would want specific detailed info from an md and likely a pharmacist too. But.. changing from propranolol to metoprolol and later to carvedilol did not take much of a transition. I didn't have to wean slowly because the beta blockage was still in effect and so not running away with the rhythms... at least no more than was already happening anyhow.
Avatar m tn Propranolol has a reportedly better shortening effect on Long Q than Metoprolol. Are you taking Metoprolol Tartrate? Metoprolol has a very short half life; typically 5 hours or so. In that time, half of it is metabolized. Physicians usually prescribe Metoprolol to be taken twice a day beca use of his. MetoprololSuccinate is the time release version, and that is taken once a day. In addition 25mg. is an exceedingly small dose.
Avatar n tn ve been taking 10-40 mg at a time for inappropriate sinus tachycardia control (probably anxiety, but who knows). The propranolol seemed like a good choice since i also have headaches (kill 2 birds with 1 stone) but it seems to be having too much of a cerebral effect on me....
1243620 tn?1274790697 Does anyone take propranolol for anxiety and panic attacks? I've had crippling anxiety for my whole life. Antidepressants increase it to the point where I'm in such a state I almost pass out from hypervenitlating. I've heard propranolol is good for this, and is effective.
