2899052 tn?1436831245 I'm recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism with Graves' disease. The endocrinology doctor prescribed me Methimazole 10mg (3 tablets) in morning, that's 30mg. I also have to take Propranolol (3 times a day) every 8 hours to control my palpitation. I'm very concerned about take Methimazole because I heard it will give me liver problem and I'm very scared of taking radioactive because it can harm my eyes. Am I wrong? I need to know if they are they safe?
1008841 tn?1293598960 Beta blockers are used to prevent bleeding varices. They have nothing to do with fibrosis or liver disease per se. Have you bleed before? Have you been banded? If bleeding was a major problem they would perform a TIPS procedure to relieve the pressure. Having portal hypertension is a complication of cirrhosis of the liver. A cirrhotic liver can't regenerate itself as a liver with lesser degree of damage. Your liver scarred with is why you have portal hypertension.
1475202 tn?1536270977 However reduction in portal hypertension is possible through the use of nonselective beta blockers, particularly propranolol and Nadolol. These medications reduce portal pressures both by decreasing cardiac output and by producing splanchnic vasoconstriction. Several studies have shown that nonselective beta blockers decrease the risk for first variceal hemorrhage by 40% to 50% when compared to patients taking placebo.
Avatar f tn As Sir_Osis mentioned propranolol is a beta blocker, which lowers blood pressure and heart rate. I would imagine that an overdose would severely drop someone's blood pressure...which in turn, would decrease the blood supply to the organs (which obviously includes the liver). This drop in blood supply to the liver could cause a "shock to the liver" and elevate liver enzymes. I have seen where someone's liver enzymes began trending downwards after a similar event occurred.
Avatar f tn My daughter (6 years old) was diagnosed the beginning of June with Graves. Since then we've been on Methimazole. We started with Atenolol but 3 weeks into it was put on Propranolol 4 times a day to get her heart rate under control. We were told that in a couple of weeks if her numbers weren't down we'd be doing RAI. Next visit the numbers had moved T3 was down from 15.9 to 7.1. We were happy to finally see progress.
Avatar f tn Hi I have graves disease and in the last 2 months I have been losing mass amounts of hair. Why all the sudden am I losing my hair?
Avatar f tn This is why they MUST see a hepatologist (a doctor who specializes in liver disease) ASAP. Your relative will only get sicker over time and needs medical help to stay a live until they can get a new liver. Your relative should go to the nearest transplant center that performs liver transplants and get listed for a new liver. A hernia is not a major issue. It is not worth the risk of surgery to repair it. I have the same thing myself.
Avatar m tn So what is good for one person with hep C may not be good for another. It all depends of the degree of liver disease and to what is good or safe for a particular patient.
Avatar f tn Hi I have graves disease. I found out Jan 29th this year. I ran out of propranolol (becuase when I break them they crumble sometimes) so I didn't take it for a day. my heart rate went up to 116. I am taking them now. I do feel good though. Really good. The only thing is that I do get tired. I am ready for bed around 10:30. but I awake at 6:00 in the morning.
Avatar f tn I've been taking Propranolol for high blood pressure and tachycardia(10mg at 8am, 2pm, and 8pm) for about 18 days now, and four days ago I woke up feeling quite dizzy. Since then it seemed to get better, but now I feel lethargic, dizzy, and generally unwell. Is it my drug? Note: I'm a 15-year-old male.
Avatar m tn An ultrasound is only used to diagnose internal physical abnormalities and can only confirm a diagnoses of advanced liver disease when the disease has progressed to the point that the liver is scared and has developed nodules on its surface, the spleen is enlarged or liver cancer has developed. It is can not be used to replace a biopsy as it can't tell the difference between various stages of liver disease which is one of the main purposes of a biopsy.
Avatar m tn I started to become obsessed with my heart and worried non stop about heart attacks and disease. So much that I took more propranolol tablets and became addicted to heart rate apps. Now I no longer use the apps but I feel like the propranolol are what's keeping me stable. And because of that, I no longer feel safe without taking them. I feel like my body and heart are exposed without taking propranolol.
Avatar f tn Since she is taking Lactulose which is used to treat brain/mental problems (encephalopathy) created by the liver disease she will become disoriented and may go into a coma. She may have been having an episode of encephalopathy (mental disorientation, coordination problems) when she broke her femur. If she is by herself this could be very dangerousness and life threatening. In the end many patients go into a coma and without treatment will die in a coma.
1198742 tn?1293503376 Maybe they want to see what is going on with the med. Propranolol can cause dizziness and other cardio issues. Again, nothing to worry about. I have been on and off many times myself. "husband he sleeps his days and awake all night now" Is his ascites keeping him up at night? It is not uncommon to have day-night reversal due to hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Does he have signs of HE? Confusion, inability to concentrate, foggy thinking? Is he taking lactulose? Rifaximin for HE?
Avatar f tn I have a history of migraines for about twenty years. I quit smoking 7 months ago, and started propranolol 20 mg once a day. I gained 30 pounds. My whole body is sore and Im having episodes where my upper body and sometimes legs just feel so heavy and tired I feel like Im going to pass out. Had a Head CT, Head and Neck CTA, CBC, EKG all were normal. Is it related to migraine? ER doctor said it is anxiety. Oh I stopped celexa five months ago because I was extremely fatigued.

Avatar f tn My son David has been sick with hyperthyroide for almost 3 years. He is taking methomazole and propranolol. he is not married and has no children, so we say 'no' to radioactive treatment. I hope that we can find other kind of cure. please let us know if there are any kind of new treatments and research groups that we can contact. thank you and God bless you.
Avatar m tn What complicates things more is that you are taking meds and an iron supplement which can make your liver disease worse and cause you to have more symptoms.Plus a number of these meds may also have numerous side effects or interactions that can be worsened by having cirrhosis which can interfere with the metabolization of these meds. I think you hit the nail on the head when you pointed out the lack of good quality healthcare where you live.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism last august and have been on propranolol and methimazole since. I was taking four methimazole and now my specialist increased it to 5 and that really makes me sad. I'm gaining weight and feel so awful about myself. Yes i am feeling better which is worth alot but my hot flashes are insane. My pituitary gland is what the specialist refers to as "sleeping" and so I was wondering if you have any suggestions as to how to wake it up.
1462910 tn?1285980010 Portal hypertensive gastropathy (PHG) is part of a complex syndrome which occurs as a complication of chronic liver disease and portal hypertension (PHTN). At endoscopy, the gastric mucosa shows that mosaic-like pattern and red marks, which are the source of gastric bleeding. Only the severe form of gastropathy is liable to bleed.
Avatar f tn I read that too much potassium doesn’t work well while on propranolol because while on it the body does not excrete potassium as normally and you can get levels that are too high. Could this be the cause or is there an adjustment period while taking propranolol? I’ve been drinking pomegranate juice and cherry juice, 4 oz of each, with breakfast this past week. These are very high in potassium. Something is making me feel very strange and I’m hoping it wears off.
Avatar m tn So only by properly managing your hepatitis B with treatment, who infection led to your liver disease and cirrhosis, will the resulting cirrhosis, enlarged spleen and other complications of the cirrhosis be able to improve. Be well.
Avatar m tn Many pain relievers are dangerous for persons with stage 4 liver disease (cirrhosis). NSAIDs can cause internal bleeding and kidney failure in people with cirrhosis. It doesn't appear that the cause of your husband's headaches have been diagnosed properly. Slightly high blood pressure doesn't normally cause headaches. High blood pressure is called the "silent killer" because many people don't realize they have it.
1198742 tn?1293503376 But because its a liver clinic there are two doctors, So this time we see the other doctor, she drops his spironolacton to 100 mg , and the furosemide to 20 mg a day, Because my husband has lost 16 lbs in 6 days . And i asked her about the propranolol and she wasnt sure why the other doctor took him off so she went and asked him and he couldnt remmember because he never put it on my husbands chart makes no sense .. So hes not on the propranolol.
726103 tn?1233009786 if the patient already ahs low platelets due to late stage liver disease, this might prevent them from treating their disease. Is this the case with you r husband? Is his doctor telling him he can’t treat due to reduced platelet counts? Liver disease is often referred to as decompensated when the liver ceases to function properly; if your husband has experienced grade three varicies, it sounds to me as though he might have portal hypertension; one of the hallmarks of decompensation.
