I just found out that i have a hyperthyroid. symtoms have been on and off since december. recently i seem to be on edge all the time. i am on atenolol 50 mg 2x's a day. and methimazole 10mg 1 time per day. how long does this take to work. sometimes im not sure if it is my thyroid or just plain anxiety. please help!!
I have had shaking hands and legs, rapid heartbeat, trouble swallowing, sweating, anxiety, depression, mood changes and shorten periods now for years and thought it was just me. The doctor started me on propranolol but it seems to not be working as well as it did in the beginning. I feel like I am going crazy.
My son David has been sick with hyperthyroide for almost 3 years. He is taking methomazole and propranolol. he is not married and has no children, so we say 'no' to radioactive treatment. I slowly got off propranolol 2 weeks ago after my surgery for hyperthyroid and after i did i starting getting really bad anxiety attacks, this whole week has been horrible, from day to night i havnt been able to relax. How long does it take for someones body to adjust off being used to propranolol? Any one else have this problem?
My hair is falling out, I sweat at the drop of a hat, lose my temper over the tiniest thing and my eyes have swelling and irritation. I finally saw an endo last week and she thinks I have Graves but my test results today show free T3 and T4 within the normal range even though TSH is suppressed.
I was supposed to have RAI uptake scan today with ablation treatment to follow but had to cancel due to a CT Scan with contrast I had done last week.
Heart palps can occur after RAI - I assume you were hyperthyroid and that is why you had RAI? Graves?
You should be getting ready to have blood work - are you on any meds right now for your thyroid?
I have been trying to do some reading on it so i will be able to understand more. He is currently on tapazole and propranolol. Since beginning the tapazole, he has been having major mood swings. He realizes that he is having them but doesnt seem to try and control it, or maybe he cant control it. I am at a loss of what to do. I dont know what to say to him because i dont know what type of mood he will be in. He can have several ups and downs within one day.

I have just recently been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer and have just recently been dealing with a racing heart that last all day long. Usually I would just assume that this is because of work but it starts as soon as i get out of bed and last all day even if im just laying around being lazy.
I dont know if I want to take new medication right off the bat. Im up for a new beta blocker but Id like to try and combat this naturally first and then go from there. I see this thing called L carnitine helps too but I dont know much about that pill either. Im hoping there are a few people on the site with some experiences to share.
I read Sertraline reacts with Propranolol. It makes Propranolol more toxic and can give me low BP and bradycardia. Recently my BP was a bit high (140/90) and pulse rate was 72.

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism last august and have been on propranolol and methimazole since. I was taking four methimazole and now my specialist increased it to 5 and that really makes me sad. I'm gaining weight and feel so awful about myself. Yes i am feeling better which is worth alot but my hot flashes are insane. My pituitary gland is what the specialist refers to as "sleeping" and so I was wondering if you have any suggestions as to how to wake it up.
Thank you for your comments. I guess that I was thinking that once they had her levels to normal, it was a matter of taking meds and all would be good. I'm very concerned about her beginning school in a few weeks. We go in for blood this week and back to the doctor the following week. Since you've had RAI, do you have any of the Graves symptoms or did it all go away???
Hi Everyone, I am new to the forum and would greatly appreciate some advice. I have been sick since the birth of my child 5 months ago and have yet to obtain a diagnosis. I am symptomatic of hyperthyroid however; have recieved some confusing results. I have tchardia, night sweats, severe anxiety attacks, weight loss with a normal appetite, nauseau, frequent bowel movements, muscle weakness and intolerance to heat. My t4 i have been told is 24.5 normal range in Canada is 12-22.
Once I was diagnosed, I was relief, but my anxiety and sleeplessness didn’t go away. I was on 10MG Propranolol as needed basis. However, to make the anxiety go away, I must take it three times a day. About 18 days into the Methimazole, I started to take only one or two 10MG Propranolol. I think I may not need to take it today or even just one. I have heard that Propranolol, beta blocker, can also create insomnia.
However, I still can’t sleep.
I have a history of migraines for about twenty years. I quit smoking 7 months ago, and started propranolol 20 mg once a day. I gained 30 pounds. My whole body is sore and Im having episodes where my upper body and sometimes legs just feel so heavy and tired I feel like Im going to pass out. Had a Head CT, Head and Neck CTA, CBC, EKG all were normal. Is it related to migraine? ER doctor said it is anxiety. Oh I stopped celexa five months ago because I was extremely fatigued.
8 and the lowest is .3. I can recognize when I am hyperthyroid, and have managed with taking propranolol as needed. I feel fine when my TSH returns to a higher level. More recently, I have moved and started an intense school program. I started having hyperthyroid symptoms and have had severe anxiety and only slept a few hours a night and had diarrhea up to 10x a day, and lost 10 lbs in a few weeks. I felt so ill that I could not stay in school. I had my thyroid tested and the TSH was .
I was also told that some do choose to abort because of the drugs and because of the hyperthyroid and graves. I have to take the propranolol because if i don't my heart rate will be in the 120's. Without the propranolol I will have heart problems. Without the methimazole well thats is just dangerous. So I have no choice than to take them. I could take the ptu.
Hi guys! It's been awhile! I got a lot of help here years ago. I've been on the same dose of NP Thyroid for the last several years, I hadn't tested in a long time. I have been under-weight for a few years, but that had seemed to happen in cycles in my life and the previous test to this a couple of years ago was all good.....
Thing that has changed: I had been prescribed Propranolol 30 years ago to prevent migraines.
I read that too much potassium doesn’t work well while on propranolol because while on it the body does not excrete potassium as normally and you can get levels that are too high. Could this be the cause or is there an adjustment period while taking propranolol? I’ve been drinking pomegranate juice and cherry juice, 4 oz of each, with breakfast this past week. These are very high in potassium.
Something is making me feel very strange and I’m hoping it wears off.
Does anyone know how propranolol effects exercise? I do triathlon and train using a heart rate monitor. I am wondering if I would be able to progress athletically given my heart rate would be lowered substantially?
