Pristiq and liver

Common Questions and Answers about Pristiq and liver

pristiq

I am just curious to hear about any personal experiences you may have had with Pristiq and/or Effexor. My doctor has been favoring Pristiq but with no real valid reasons why and when I researched the two, based on clinical findings, I'm not sure that Pristiq is really better than Effexor. Thoughts?
), but they seem a little out of date and have worse side effects. So that leaves me with Pristiq or Cymbalta (Remeron is another choice, but I haven't heard much about it). I've read the side effects and dangers for both, but am uncertain which one to go with. Pristiq seems like it's very similar to Effexor, so would it have the same sexual side effects?
One being selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) like Lexapro and the other being serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) like Pristiq. (Pristiq is being targeted as the first non-hormonal based treatment for menopause.) In my humble opinion, and consider that i'm not a doctor, i would talk to you doctor about Cymbalta. It's also a new drug from the same company (Pristiq's company) but some a lot of people have reported an increase in energy.
Understand your predicament. Elevated liver enzymes could be due to Pristiq. It is a side effect of this medication. Discuss this with your consulting doctor he may change the dose or the medication. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
What your doc has seen is the new info on Cymbalta that came out when the manufacturer applied for an additional approval for fibromyalgia and other pain sufferers and the FDA committee discovered at least a dozen liver deaths from Cybalta. But Pristiq, which is the new and improved Effexor, might have the same not yet revealed problem. In the old days, when tricyclics were the rage, everyone on them had to get their liver enzymes checked regularly. Most meds are liver toxic to an extent.
bottom all day long, bloating, some soft stools, anxiety. I was on Remeron since the first week of September and dropped it because my Liver Function tests came back high. I was also taking a whole bunch of supplements at the time and don't know what caused the high numbers so I dropped every pill. The Remeron didn't seem to have any positive or negative affect on me.

Thanks for the info on the SSRI's. I did my research and I brought it up to my primary doc and he says "Oh don't worry. All the drugs have those liver warnings on them." I'm on Cymbalta and it clearly states on the commercial not to take if you are prone to liver problems. I swear they lie to us just so they won't get sued.
I read where this could be a problem with the liver. Should he talk to the doctor about having a liver test. Is this drug broken down through the liver?
I have been on pristiq for a year but was wondering if that was the cause. This is only the second time I have notice it in a year but am very curious as to what cause these.any additional info would be appreciated.
Check that the 'men's formula' does not have iron. If there is any liver damage, your liver will find it hard to process iron which accumulates and can cause more damage than good. Well done on your drink free years; it's great that you've looked into diet and the hygiene products (yep - use bleach, but use it with gloves on :-). Good luck.
Hi- I am currently withdrawing from Effexor, which I was given to taper off Pristiq. Because Pristiq comes in the 50mg dose, there is no good way to come off it. It is essentially the same as Effexor, which is notoriously hard to withdraw from. My psych said that 50mg of Pristiq=150mg of Effexor. If you jumped from this dose or higher, I would expect to have withdrawal for at least 3 weeks, maybe longer. At least you will probably have depression and anxiety.
Recently I had to go to the hospital because my liver enzymes were extremely elevated to the point where I almost had to have a transplant. When I went to the hospital the doctors immediately took me off all medications which were klonopin 2mg twice a day, geodon 80mg at bedtime, and pristiq 100mg in the morning.
A psychiatrist who specializes in geriatric cases is called for here. The elderly generally take smaller doses because the liver metabolizes drugs more in the elderly. And any antidepressant can cause increased anxiety particularly in the beginning, but even later, as they can be stimulating.
Let me begin by saying I am NOT a medical professional, so I'm NOT advising nor am I promoting anything here, I'm just replying to a post, and sharing my story. OH, YES, to the ANGER!!! Savella, for me, was Satan in a pill and "hell" for me and everyone I love most and spend the most time with. By day 6 of the titration pack I was FURIOUS, RAGING, "going postal"!
Consulted with 4 other cardiologists and no one had a reason other than maybe this or that. He is on Pristiq antipressent. All Drs said they have never seen anything like that. NO cocaine or any other drug use. No damage to the heart muscle.
We finally found an antidepressant which has been great (Pristiq) after trying 15 other antidepressants and I know his outlook would improve so much more if we could get to the root of this itching. His liver enzymes come back normal all of the time. Do you have any ideas which may help us- we have gotten rid of our pets, have changed the way he eats totally, have been getting allergy shots, have changed detergents, etc but no relief.
I started caring for a brother who is waiting for a kidney/liver transplant. I read where Prozac might not be good for anxiety that it may cause anxiety? Also I read where there are other medications better for someone my age. I read if you are 65 or older there are better medications for our age group? I don't know a thing about Effexor and trust prozac since I was on it once before in the past. Not sure what to think?
Prior to me finding out my about my liver I was on klonopin 2mg twice a day for panic attacks, geodon 80mg at bedtime, and pristiq 100mg in the morning. When I went into the hospital for my liver problems the doctors immediately took me off all medications I was on. Now I am experiencing withdrawal symptoms from one, two, or all of the medications-I can't be sure and am having severe panic attacks 6-7 a day, I am feeling very depressed and am unable to sleep.
I am on Pristiq (the new Effexor) and have not painted since starting the med a few years ago. Recently I set up all the things I need to paint, but I have no motivation to create. I have started to slowly mean myself off Pristiq and will be seeing my psychiatrist tomorrow to discuss. I have no sex drive and feel numb. Are these feeling due to what I am going thru in my life (divorce, losing most of my pets, moving, losing my condo, owing money)? Or is it a side affect of antidepressants?
BUT-one side effect of Effexor can be hepatitis B and even liver failure. Pristiq is not metabolized by the liver. People with the 'missing enzyme' might do better on Pristiq than Effexor. It goes straight to the blood stream so it may be used to treat major depression more quickly. Pristiq is less likely to have as many drug to drug interactions as Effexor does. Pristiq has more affect on the seratonin system than Effexor does.

The reuptake effects of venlafaxine are dose dependent. * Desvenlafaxine (Pristiq) * Duloxetine (Cymbalta, Yentreve)Duloxetine is contraindicated in patients with heavy alcohol use or chronic liver disease. Give Lexapro some time to work and maybe one day it will be like a miracle day and it will start do wonders. Otherwise talk to your doctor about trying the drugs i suggested you above.
I have been on 2- 60 mg. a day cymbalta for years. My new doctor has put me on Pristiq because I STILL deal with deep depression: crying, insomnia, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, heart disease, just found out I definitely have liver disease...on and on it goes. I would be sure that I have a physician that you can truly speak with and that can SEE the symptoms when you are in the room with him/her. My new family dr. can see what I go through and this makes me trust him more.
Because I am a nurse I refuse to take narcotics. I have just been put back on Tramadol, Pristiq and Amatryptyline beacause my doctor is trying to reduce my liver and kidney risks with the massive Tylenol and Ibuprofen doses I was taking. The discs in my neck cause severe cervicogenic headaches that are blindingly painful. I figure at this point I either deal with it or give up. Giving up IS NOT an option, therefore, I deal with it.
If so and you are acute you can think of your liver as a normal liver rather than a Hep C liver. It takes years for the liver to even begin to fibrose, although inflammation may start to creep in. Most of us lived with Hep C for twenty years and didn't know,so take the doctors advice and take the medication. The liver is amazingly resilient,so concentrate on the DDD for now.
Currently I have a few health issues which are pericarditis, high blood pressure which is currently under control with medication (this medication my GP has advised I will need to take up for life),high ezymes in my liver (no liver damage and slowly coming down) and have inflamed duodedum. I have abused alcohol in the past and was a heavy smoker which I have now quit for the past few months and also I have anxiety attacks which I'm working to resolve with my psychiatrist at the moment.
Its very dangeruss and can even cause you to have seizures. if you want to come of them please do it under close medical supervision.
