Pristiq and liver

Common Questions and Answers about Pristiq and liver

pristiq

I am just curious to hear about any personal experiences you may have had with Pristiq and/or Effexor. My doctor has been favoring Pristiq but with no real valid reasons why and when I researched the two, based on clinical findings, I'm not sure that Pristiq is really better than Effexor. Thoughts?
I've read the side effects and dangers for both, but am uncertain which one to go with. Pristiq seems like it's very similar to Effexor, so would it have the same sexual side effects? And Cymbalta seems great until you read the part where your liver can explode if you drink alcohol (I rarely drink), plus it has also been used to treat chronic pain, which I do have. So, has anyone taken either or both? And which one has worked better for you?
bottom all day long, bloating, some soft stools, anxiety. I was on Remeron since the first week of September and dropped it because my Liver Function tests came back high. I was also taking a whole bunch of supplements at the time and don't know what caused the high numbers so I dropped every pill. I am 25 year old male, 5'10, 145 lbs, I have delayed Gastric Emptying (as seen on a Gastric Emptying Study) and struggle to NOT lose weight, I actually want to gain weight.
From what I have read and heard from almost every doctor most antidepressants are safe for the liver. There are noted dose changes for people with liver disease on some of the drugs but overall they are safe. However anyone can react to a drug diffrent than others have, so a follow up blood test is always recommended. I do however know of one drug, Cymbalta, has been flaged by the FDA as not safe for anyone with liver disease.
The SGPT and SGOT levels are elevated in liver disorders. Besides this they are also elevated in conditions like muscle injury and sometimes due to medications. GTT (gamma glutamyl transpeptidase) is often elevated in those who use alcohol. But it is also elevated due to liver-toxic substances like paracetamol. It's likely that the medications you are using could have caused this elevation. Please re check these values to study their progression. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
What your doc has seen is the new info on Cymbalta that came out when the manufacturer applied for an additional approval for fibromyalgia and other pain sufferers and the FDA committee discovered at least a dozen liver deaths from Cybalta. But Pristiq, which is the new and improved Effexor, might have the same not yet revealed problem. In the old days, when tricyclics were the rage, everyone on them had to get their liver enzymes checked regularly. Most meds are liver toxic to an extent.
Here is some information on Ativan and other benzodiazepines. Also SSRI antidepressant. They are all excreted through the liver, and all have a warning for people with Liver diseases. You need a good Dr. to work with you on which anti Depressant to use also which Type of drug to use for anxiety. For anxiety Xanax and Clonopin are the preferred Anti Anxiety drugs, as for the A.D.'s I had a hepatoxic reaction to Lexapro and Zoloft, so you want to be-careful there.

x 2, milk thistle 1000 mg x 2, probiotic Acidophilus 10 mg x 2, selenium 200 mcg x 2, melatonin 3 mg once a day,pristiq 50 mg once a day, and mens formula 1@day x 2.
BUT-one side effect of Effexor can be hepatitis B and even liver failure. Pristiq is not metabolized by the liver. People with the 'missing enzyme' might do better on Pristiq than Effexor. It goes straight to the blood stream so it may be used to treat major depression more quickly. Pristiq is less likely to have as many drug to drug interactions as Effexor does. Pristiq has more affect on the seratonin system than Effexor does.
I was on 300mg of inderal (bata blocker) but have since stopped since that is a high dose for a person of a 100 pounds and my kidney and liver functions started to suffer. Plus these drugs are not pregnancy approved. I went to the OB to see if I could have a second child and I was stunned by the response....."adopt." The OB's reasoning was that I would be on bed rest and I was high risk the first time and deliveres 6 weeks early.
e You know how and whe you became infected. If so and you are acute you can think of your liver as a normal liver rather than a Hep C liver. It takes years for the liver to even begin to fibrose, although inflammation may start to creep in. Most of us lived with Hep C for twenty years and didn't know,so take the doctors advice and take the medication. The liver is amazingly resilient,so concentrate on the DDD for now.
Hi, I have been on Effexor XR for 3 years and I have gained about 40-50pounds, most when my dose was increased to 225, now I am on 75mg b/c I'm getting ready to wean off the medicine in a couple of weeks, and I haven't lost anything yet. My eating habits have not changed and I exercise. I have always been underweight and I could eat whatever I wanted...I'm only 26 years old...I know my metabolism has changed some, but not enough to pack on 40 pounds.
The dizziness resembled being carsick, with lightheadedness and occasional moments of nausea and feeling faint (but I never passed out). I had a CAT scan and blood work twice, and so far no diagnosis for the dizziness/fatigue. It got better for a few weeks but last week I began to have dizzy spells again, this time accompanied by maxillary sinus pressure. I had just switched allergy medications, from Nasonex to generic Flonase, right at the time my symptoms returned.
I'm trying to stay positive, but one minute I'm ok (sort of) then the next breath, I feel like ODing and be done with it all, but know that's not the answer, and might not even work and I could be left brain damaged, kidney failure, liver damage etc, so NO, of course I can't do anything like that. I don't want to, as I still have some hope left in me.
hi, i was on effexor for 5 years and it does make you sweat alot, one of the many side effects of this med. i did'nt have the ammonia smell, that's something i've never heard of before. he should ask his dr. about this to find out what's going on. how is he doing otherwise on this med? is it helping his depression, is he having any other side effects? i hope you find out what's causing the ammonia smell. take care.
My enzymes are still greatly elevated and the doctor will not put me on any meds because of my liver and I am experiencing withdrawal from 1, 2, or all of the meds-which I have been on for about 2 years now. I am also experiencing severe panic attacks-at least 6-7 per day and my depression is getting to the point of me not even wanting to leave my house. I am also having suicidal thoughts and have had 6 suicide attempts since I was diagnosed almost 7 years ago.
The ER doctors were baffled as to the cause of my pain and so was I. They did so many tests and what came back that was ALARMING was that my liver enzymes were TWENTY TIMES HIGHER than the highest NORMAL count. They took me off everything, except morphine for my pain, admitted me, which turned into a 4-night and day hospital stay until they could levelize my liver enzymes. That is when my doctor switched me to Pristiq. He's testing me every three months and so far, so good.
I am 23 years old and since I was roughly 12, I have taken various SSRI medications, including Paxil, Zoloft, Cylexa, and most recently, Pristiq. In conjunction, I have taken Xanax or Ativan. Each time I would take a medicine for a few months, I would begin to notice that it no longer seemed to "help", resulting in multiple switches/changes recommended by Psychs. Most recently, I missed a few doses of Pristiq.
for example paroxetine causes sedation and weight gain, and prozac causes activation and a bit of weight loss. Citalopram is weight and sleep neutral in most people. All SSRIs and SNRIs have sexual side effects, EXCEPT perhaps Pristiq, a new SNRI that has very low incidence of sexual side effects in the one or two trials that have been done with the medication.
My son,21, had mild chest pain and some numbness on left side, Went to Emergency room and Dr said troponin level 25. Said he had a heart attack. Did Echo, ECK and heart catherizations and and they all came back normal. Troponin kept going up to 62 then 70 then 130 before started to go down. He did not have any shortness of breath. All three ECG are normal. Consulted with 4 other cardiologists and no one had a reason other than maybe this or that. He is on Pristiq antipressent.
If an elderly person is on SSRI for depression and it isn't helping and she is becoming more angry, agitated, since the med.

Prior to me finding out my about my liver I was on klonopin 2mg twice a day for panic attacks, geodon 80mg at bedtime, and pristiq 100mg in the morning. When I went into the hospital for my liver problems the doctors immediately took me off all medications I was on. Now I am experiencing withdrawal symptoms from one, two, or all of the medications-I can't be sure and am having severe panic attacks 6-7 a day, I am feeling very depressed and am unable to sleep.
I did the same thing today in passing a roundish yellow pea-sized one. I take Bupropion (generic for Wellbutrin), which is white. It looked exactly the same -- only yellow. Cannot figure out if my body simply did not digest it. Also have done liver & gallbladder cleanse in the past -- where I have passed yellow and green stones that are similar to this. However, they were not the exact shape of the Buproprion.
My doctor put me on Pristiq to slow the production of bile and it has worked. I have suffered from IBS?! or overactive Bile since 1992 and Pristiq keeps things under control. I still have to watch how much acidic foods and/or spicy foods, but daily living is much better. Fried foods are a no-no. I hate being on Pristiq as you can not just stop it when you want, but it does help my stomach and I do not need a map of restrooms.
Hi and Welcome Tramadol Warriors, Please come on in and make yourself comfy. All are welcome.
Do you have any ideas which may help us- we have gotten rid of our pets, have changed the way he eats totally, have been getting allergy shots, have changed detergents, etc but no relief. Sometimes his face and ears will crack and burn and the itching gets worse when he sweats. Do you think it has anything to do with how his liver filters bile? (There was only a little scirrhosis in his liver) . Does anyone have any ideas how to give him some relief?
Right now I am off of pristiq and abilify and with only Wellbutrin and Klonoplin I am adding viibryd. So far I feel worse for the wear with the nausea and all but don't want to give up just yet ( only the first week). If this does not work I will try just the Wellbutrin.
