Common Questions and Answers about Prilosec prescription dosage

prilosec

Avatar m tn ve been taking PRILOSEC OTC (non-prescription) for quite awhile, after years on the original prescription brand Prilosec. With my current insurance I can save money by getting generic prescription omeprazole. Now, in the past I wouldn't have been as concerned about it. Back before losing weight improved my *symptomatic" acid reflux, I would have just thought, "well, if you don't have an increase in heartburn, the generic rx is working just as well as Prilosec OTC.
Avatar n tn I have actually been on some form of reflux med for a bit longer than 5yrs and started with Prilosec OTC, then prescription Prilosec, Nexium, Aciphex, and briefly Prevacid. These days I tend to take whatever I have in my medicine cabinet (Aciphex or Prevacid) twice a day, max dosage, and occasionally a tagamet to help out. I have a hiatial hernia that is going to be fixed soon so I am hoping to get off the meds and that the side effects will eventually go away...I hope.
Avatar n tn I never felt better until I got on 60 mg (2x prescription strength/day) of lansoprazole. Nothing OTC or of lower strength prescription helped. I've been on this therapy for months with no issues unless I forget to take it (blech).
Avatar f tn HPylori hides out in the outlet of the stomach, the first stage of the intestine, then when the good bacteria is killed off, the HPylori flourishes, and causes a large increase in stomach acid, which also inflames the esophagus, this is why you have stomach pain and chest pain when you have a battle with this bacteria, The treatment for this bacteria is two types very strong (Not just one) Anti-biotics and an acid pump prohibitor like prilosec or omeprazole, The anti-biotic dosage can be as hig
Avatar f tn Is it okay to take Prilosec? They said Zantac was okay, but not to take Prevacid. I bought Prilosec and want your opinions on it.
Avatar m tn It finally seemed to kick in after 4 weeks and I had 5 glorious days of no acid, or very little. I then reduced my dosage to one 30mg capsule daily. Within two days the GERD came back full force! Is it better to go back to two pills? Is it common that it would come back so strong? I'd rather take the two capsules again than have this! Ugh!
Avatar n tn Is it safe to take 60mg of prevacid in the morning and 20 mg of prilosec in the evening?
Avatar f tn I took over the counter from 5 weeks till 16 weeks when my doctor prescribed me the prescription strength prilosec
Avatar f tn Anyone with HepC taking 20 mg. of Prilosec? My dr. said ok to take, but I'd feel better if anyone else is/has used it. Either a prescription or OTC.
4798447 tn?1359319344 Two things you can try at home, 1, Try taking a 14 day program of Prilosec OTC, if you have a marked improvement, then this may confirm HPylori, because Prilosec shuts down the stomachs acid pumps, and supresses the HPylori bacteria, You should also 2, Go to a local health foods market and purchase a good "Probiotic" Jarrow brand is one of the better brands.
Avatar f tn Prilosec and Nexium is for heartburn. Prilosec is taken over a 14 day period and can only be taken every 4 months. Not sure about dosing for Nexium but Prilosec is often prescribed because it is over the counter.
Avatar f tn Has anyone heard that the dosage is based on your weight? My numbers are perfect, according to the doctor, however, I am always tired, have reflux problems that the gastro doesn't understand why, I am constantly having hard stools, not gaining or losing weight, and getting very frustrated. I keep thinking I need my dosage raised but no one will listen to me. Am I thinking the right way or not? Help! Need your advise.
Avatar n tn I too have GERD, and I take the same medication as you. I have never had any problem with Prilosec, 20-mg. The OTC Prilosec is 10-mg, and I take two capsules a day if my prescription at the VA is late. I have never noticed my bowel movement smells any worst than it normally does. There is a test you can do to judge whether Prilosec is affecting your bowels. There are about 4 or 5 competitors to Prilosec. Examples are Zantac, Prevacid, 15-mg; Pepcid 20-mg.
Avatar m tn ve only had oral outbreaks so far, i asked the doctor for acyclovir and he gave me a prescription for 800mg tablets and to take them 2x daily for a total dose of 1600mg everyday as supressive therapy. i'm concerned this is too high a dose? i thought it should be 400mg and take 2x daily for a total dose of 800mg? it was an ER doctor that gave it to me because i don't have health insurance and went to the county hospital.
Avatar f tn The prilosec OTC may not be the same dosage or strength a Dr might RX. Ask ur pharmacist what u may do as far as dosage. Don't forget dairy can slow ur LES..... and that bacteria can cause alot of these issues too...ask to be checked for H.Pylori.

Avatar m tn I currently take Amiodarone 200mg a day, Metoprolol 100mg a day, Prilosec OTC 40mg a day. I have occasional Atrial Fibrillation. I was put on the Metoprolol in 2004 (my dosage is much lower now) and the Amiodarone in July 2008. I suffer greatly from panic attacks and extreme anxiety. My doctor prescribed Zoloft for me at 25mg a day for two weeks, then 50mg a day thereafter. He knows all the meds I currently take, of course.
Avatar n tn Hello, Take some OTC antacid like Mylanta. You can also take zantac(ranitidine)or prilosec(omeprazole) after prescription from your doctor. These will help. Also keep your fluid electrolyte balance optimum by drinking lots of fluids. I hope it helps. Take care and regards.
Avatar m tn Probably not (because you are asking). Don't risk it, don't upset the doctor. If I were you, I would telephone the office, and when the receptionist/nurse answers, I would word it like this: "Hello, I noticed the doctor changed the dosage of my prescription. When am I supposed (use the word "supposed") to get this prescription filled?" Let THEM tell YOU, and make notes to yourself who you talked to, the time, and date.
Avatar f tn The doctor wound up having me take Prilosec OTC. It was the only thing that worked for me. My daughter suffered from horrible acid reflux from birth until she outgrew it at 18 months. I know genetics play a huge role in acid reflux...but I always wondered if having to use Prilosec during pregnancy caused part of my daughter's reflux? I am only 12 weeks and already have heartburn...I'm suffering but scared to even use Tums!
Avatar n tn s usually around 130. Is this a delayed reaction to the Prilosec, or is it the Prilosec with the B12? Thanks!!!
Avatar n tn Hydromorphone is stronger than Percocets but it seems like your doc offset that in the dosage. If you want to get off you should ask your doc for a taper plan.
Avatar f tn Most knowledgeable hepatologists prescribe proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs like Nexium or Prilosec. Both are generally considered liver friendly; omeprazole is available generically if cost is an issue.
Avatar m tn I am currently prescribed ativan 1 mg from my doctor. My prescription ran out and I can't get it refilled until tomorrow. My husband has a prescription for ativan .5.
