Common Questions and Answers about Prilosec pregnancy category

prilosec

454221 tn?1259445739 My understanding is that Prilosec had not been assigned a category for pregnancy by the FDA because its effects during pregnancy are unknown. Not taking the Prilosec until you have spoken about this with your doctor on Thursday as a wise idea - in the meantime, you can take tums (or a generic equivalent) to help w/ the heartburn. I hope you feel a little better soon.
593603 tn?1229378162 i "believe" you can take it....the only i could find online, says to let your dr know you have/are taking it....the key ingredient, ranitidine, can be passed through breastmilk..... most dr's give you a list of "approved OTC meds", and most of them show what can be taken at different stages of pregnancy.....idk if prilosec has been "ok'd", HOWEVER i do know that for normal people, it can cause huge stomach issues, so def stay away from that!!!!!
Avatar f tn Nexium is a category B heartburn medicine and safe to take during pregnancy.
568659 tn?1256139982 Well, I just looked online and it is a category C drug and is not to be used during pregnancy especially not before 20 weeks. I am only 17 weeks and have been taking it since week 12! Why did he give this to me?!?!?
231441 tn?1333892766 My doctor told me I could take Zantac or Prilosec. It helps, but I dont' take it on a regular basis, only when I know I am going to need to eat something and the acid is really bad. I don't like to take medications unless necessary, but sometimes the acidity is so bad I can't eat (which isn't good either). Yogurt helps a lot also. Usually in the middle of the night if I wake up with bad acidity then I eat some yogurt and it soothes my throat a little.
Avatar n tn Besides the cost, is their truly a difference between Nexim and Prilosec. The active components in Nexium are esomprazole magnesium and in Prilosec are Omeprazole Magnesium. Also, Nexium comes in 20 mg and 40 mg capsules and Prilosec is sold over the counter in 20 mg tablets. My GI switched me to Nexium because Aciphex gave me terrible side effects and Protonix made my water brash symptoms ever worse. I have tried Prilosec in the past and it didn't have much of an effect for me.
Avatar f tn Can you call your Dr and speak with someone even though you can't see them? Prilosec is a category C so most of the time those are avoided in pregnancy unless there's a risk to the mother. The fact that you have an ulcer too I wouldn't be comfortable suggesting whether to take it or not. That's really a physician's decision based on your case.
Avatar m tn Hi, Increased acid reflux per se is not supposed to cause increased frequency of micturition but the drugs used to treat the acid reflux like prilosec, nexium which come under the category of proton pump inhibitors can cause increased frequency of micturition. I sincerely believe that helps. Please do keep me posted. Warm Regards.
Avatar f tn Is it okay to take Prilosec? They said Zantac was okay, but not to take Prevacid. I bought Prilosec and want your opinions on it.
2101847 tn?1333564794 My doctor prescribed Nexium but my insurance doesn't want to cover it, so it would be over $200 out of pocket. The pharmacist said it's because it's so similar to Prilosec, when the drug company lost their patent for Prilosec, they removed a isomer and named it Nexium. (Similar to what happen with Celexa and Lexapro) I don't get how Nexium is category B and Prilosec is C? How did you get your insurance to pay for it?
Avatar f tn Hi everyone! I have a delemma I would like to run past all of you. I take prilosec Every day for heartburn. Have for years. The OB wants to me Skipp dose or try NOT to have it at all for the first trimester (I'm 9weeks) I tired for one day and wanted to die!! She says its because we don't know enough about it to say its safe. But I still have to work and go to school. And that's really hard when your stomach is burning out of your chest! Do you think I should keep taking?
762453 tn?1234365625 Hi I don't know if I am putting this question in the right category but I had the stomach flu bad on Thursday last week putting me out of work Thur and Fri. I was feeling much better Sat through Monday but yesterday and today I have been feeling nauseas(SP?) again and don't know if it's related. I've had stomach problems and am taking Prilosec to help treat it.
Avatar f tn Mine was too! I was eating at least 8 tums a day until my doctor suggested at my 28 week check up that I take Prilosec until the end of my pregnancy. I was worried at first because I didn't want to take anything that would harm my baby, but she reassured me that Prilosec & Zantac are safe during pregnancy. Zantac will help fight symptoms after the fact for up to 12 hours & Prilosec will stop symptoms before they start all day.
Avatar f tn Noo ask ur doctor first!!
Avatar f tn Pregnancy Category D is a stronger warning than a pregnancy Category C classification. However, a pregnancy Category D medicine may still be given to a pregnant woman if the health care provider believes that the benefits to the woman outweigh the possible risks to the unborn child. Klonopin was given a pregnancy Category D rating due to the problems it caused in animal studies.
Avatar m tn Prilosec, Nexium Side Effects: Acid Reflux Medication Heart Attack Class Action Lawsuit Investigation A recent study found that proton pump inhibitor heartburn treatments such as Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid may be linked to an increased risk of heart attack, heart failure or sudden cardiac death.

Avatar f tn I have been having some GI issues for almost 2 months now and was first diagnosed with Gastritis. For the Gastritis I was given 15 days worth of Prilosec. While on the Prilosec (and before) I had diarrhea and loose stools every day. Being as I was having that before, I never attributed it to the Prilosec but now I'm questioning whether or not the Prilosec contributed to the loose bowel movements as I am now back on Prilosec and am having loose stools once again.
Avatar f tn I noticed when I lay on my left side and proped up a little it helps so much! Not sure why.
Avatar f tn Hi again, i just wanted to let you know that before I joined this Forum I had left a message on the FDA's question line. They had not gotten back to me so I thought I'd never hear back. Today, however, I did hear back from them. I asked them about whether the meds. and supplements that I've been taking, and especially Verapamil, Zantac and Prilosec OTC could possibly cause an elevation in liver enzymes.
