Avatar n tn I have been on Coumadin for 18 years due to Lupus Anticoagulant (Antiphospholipid Syndrome) and several DVTs. In 2005 had MI with occlusion of the LAD artery and had drug stent inserted and I am still on plavix. My doc has debated when to take me off the Plavix safely....what are the recent studies about this dilemma? thanks so much!

Avatar m tn Enhanced hypoprothrombinemic response to warfarin has been reported in patients with acute alcohol intoxication and/or liver disease. The proposed mechanisms are inhibition of warfarin metabolism and decreased synthesis of clotting factors. Binge drinking may exacerbate liver impairment and its metabolic ability in patients with liver dysfunction. The risk of bleeding may be increased. Conversely, reductions in INR/PT have also been reported in chronic alcoholics with liver disease.
Avatar n tn To date there have been no reports of an important interaction in humans between warfarin and clopidogrel. Nonetheless, because warfarin increases the risk of bleeding, blood tests to measure the degree to which the blood is anti-coagulated or thinned (prothrombin time; INR) may be ordered to assess the degree of blood-thinning when warfarin and clopidogrel are used together.
Avatar m tn you have to think of the worse case senario of switching to warfarin having the warfarin be too strong and your wife getting a bleed of some kind. This could be in her GI track, brain etc. and can be very life-threatening and could cause huge hospital bills. So, depending on how long she will have to take the plavix for, and what she is taking it for, it may actually be less expensive to use the plavix.
Avatar f tn Loading doses of warfarin are not warranted and may result in bleeding complications. Interactions with other drugs must be considered, and therapy in elderly patients requires careful management. Current dosing recommendations are reviewed, and practical guidelines for the optimal use of warfarin are provided". Hope this helps, and if you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond. Thanks for your question. Take care.
Avatar f tn My INR will not go above 1.5/1.6. And yes, I know all about the Vit K interactions and anything else that is possible to Google about interactions.
233622 tn?1279334905 The clearance of R-warfarin is generally half that of S-warfarin, thus as the volumes of distribution are similar, the half-life of R-warfarin is longer than that of S-warfarin. The half-life of R-warfarin ranges from 37 to 89 hours, while that of S-warfarin ranges from 21 to 43 hours. Studies with radiolabeled drug have demonstrated that up to 92% of the orally administered dose is recov-ered in urine. Very little warfarin is excreted unchanged in urine.
Avatar n tn It is easy to find information regarding drug-drug interactions for omeprazole (Prilosec) and atorvastatin (Lipitor). The omeprazole appears to increase the bioavailability of the statin, increasing the risk of side effects. Does this mean that the interaction is like taking a higher dose of the statin, which would provide benefit for someone like me who only takes a low dose (10mg atorvastatin daily) and has no statin tolerance issues?
Avatar m tn ve told us that you are not on an anticoagulant such as Warfarin). The most serious threat we AFib sufferers are exposed to is clot formation and the possibility that will cause a stroke. Aspirin will reduce the risk, an anticoagulant will reduce the risk further.
Avatar m tn ( and under that Metoprolol was mentioned ) You could bypass your doctor and consult your local chemist if you are worried about the interactions. I think that would be exactly what I would do. Chemists can be very helpful. But you would have to be experiencing some bad side effects? Or tell a little white lie and say you are and see what the chemist says.
Avatar f tn s possible she has other medical conditions that prohibit her from taking another PPI. I myself had to stop taking Prilosec as it was contraindicated with one of my cardiac meds. Just sayin'.................... On an anxiety forum, we sometimes need to stop and think how our opinions might affect someone else.
Avatar n tn Hello, Prilosec is taken for gastritis and acid reflux. It has no reported interactions with weight loss 4 pills but it is not advisable to ue weight loss 4 pills without a doctor’s guidance. It has plenty of side effects like diarrhea, oily stools, gas, flatulence, and other systemic side effects. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
Avatar n tn In a conflicting report, the effects of acute and chronic dosing of APAP on warfarin pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics was studied in 20 healthy males in a 2-phase, randomized, crossover study. The mean serum concentrations of S- and R-warfarin did not differ significantly between treatments. There was no change in anticoagulation response between treatment and control (4). INR should be monitored more closely when APAP use exceeds 2 g/day or chronic use > 7 days occurs. References: 1.
Avatar m tn I am concerned about possible drug interactions between the antibiotic azithromycin and the two heart medications warfarin and amiodarone. My relative has brief history of heart problems span one and a half years (though the underlying heart condition itself appears to be congenital). Rhythm problems resulted in CHF, hospitalization, and later diagnosis and heart surgery. Subsequent dysrhythmia and CHF has been prevented adequately with medication.
Avatar m tn After getting two stents I was put on plavix. I also have gerds and would like to know what medecine I cantake for it tht doesnt conflict with plavix.
Avatar m tn Coumadin is known for having many drug-drug and drug-food interactions, which can make you over or under coagulated. For instance, since it works by being a vitamin K antagonist, foods that contain vitamin K (like leafy greens) can lower your INR. Taking vitamin E or fish oil or aspirin could raise it, and make bleeding more likely.
612551 tn?1450022175 I have been taking 2 grams of Korean Ginseng for a few months now and have found no problem with interactions with use of Warfarin. I not here for experience here. I take mostly in the hope to achieve some energy improvements, none noted, but fyi, I lost about 10 pounds down from about 238, I am 6' 5". I believe this may be due to the Ginseng affect on my digestion of carbohydrates (which I love to eat) - causing less production of blood sugar and fat.
Avatar m tn Hi, I was on gabapentin and was on a PPI called Prilosec. If in doubt u should talk to ur Dr or pharmacist as they r better suited to inform u on drug interactions. They may inform u to take at diff times and what to avoid to help the meds aid u..... Did u develop the reflux once u started with the gabapentin or did u have it b4?
4822967 tn?1367656696 I did check the drug interactions between methimazole (Tapizole), carbimazole and PTU (the three major ATMs...anti-thyroid meds) and warfarin. While interactions are listed, it appears ATMs enhance the blood thinning effect of warfarin. The warning was that warfarin might have to be lowered once on ATMs. Not the best situation, but given the alternatives... Are your going to do the RAIU despite the iodine?
Avatar m tn t know how warfarin is affecting your life style. I have been on warfarin for years and had no concerns about running and bike riding, and using power wood working tools. All of these activities puts one at an increased risk of a cut and bleeding, but I simply take the risk. On the other hand, I don't sky dive, or pick fights ....
Avatar n tn ginger and glucosamine sulfate will affect coumadin (warfarin) I'm on warfarin and can't take ginger or glucosamine and a host of other supplements.
Avatar f tn DOES ANYONE KNOW IF WARFARIN CAN LOWER YOUR BLOOD COUNT AND AND ALSO LOWER CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D LEVELS?
690060 tn?1247841741 s been making its way to FDA approval, which was finally given today. No INR monitoring, no food interactions. But cost might be $10/day rather than 10 cents. https://us2.ixquick.com/do/metasearch.pl?
Avatar f tn Seven months ago I had a pulmonary embolism and I am told this may have been the second one.I am taking 7 mg of warfarin a day and my INR is 2.5.I had a liver transplant 10 months ago,and was told my vascular system was not great.Given my overall situation I am concerned about heart attacks and strokes.Do you think I should be taking 75mg of aspirin a day as well as the warfarin? Thanks.
Avatar m tn 17, 2009 - The FDA today warned patients not to combine Plavix with Nexium, Prilosec, and nine other drugs -- including Prozac and Tagamet. The drugs may make the anti-clotting drug Plavix dangerously less effective, the FDA says. They block an enzyme in the body that turns the drug into its active form. Plavix is the second most-prescribed drug in the world.
Avatar f tn First, I checked for interactions with your BC pill and Prilosec, none was noted. http://reference.medscape.com/drug-interactionchecker In looking elsewhere, I did see the following under possible side effects. "Side effects of Prilosec (Omeprazole) have been reported to include. Rarely: Cardiovascular: Chest pain or angina, tachycardia, bradycardia, palpitations, elevated blood pressure, peripheral edema.
