I have been on reflux meds for the past 5yrs and have had numerous side effects from hyperhydrosis, a tremor in my hand (which I was on propranolol for about 1yr 9mths for), and most recently a tic has developed in my eyelids. The hydrosis has finally went away (4.5yrs later) and the hand tremor is minimal but my eyelids are going nuts. I am assuming its the drugs for reflux (I am having surgery for that soon). Does anyone know of anything else that would be causing this?
5 month old son has numerous little problems, when he was born everything seemed fine, after a few months it was found that he had right tortacullus( he gets physio) stridor due to laryngomalacia,severe reflux( he is on prevacid due to numerous choking episodes and low weight) He also is on his 3rd ekg since the left ventricle reading is always high.
My 4-month old daughter has acid reflux. She was prescribed Prevacid three weeks ago as she was still irritable after 4-6 weeks of Zantac. After she started Prevacid she was less irritable but developed side-effects including giving up napping during the day and green, mucus-like foul smelling stool (started this week). Oh yeah, she also has a milk protein based sensitivity. My wife is still nursing but has given up all dairy and dairy-like foods.
BUT I have seen many many thru the years post that they have issues that disappear with the right med. There are other meds out there (not sure if they are all FDA approved for infant usage, though so you must discuss with your Dr but when the risks outweight the benefits they will oftentimes use the med) .. Zantac and other supressors are a thought .. they can be given up to 3X a day with Mylanta inbetween if your Dr. agrees ..
A Pedi GI may be the way to go at this point ..

For many years, GER [Gastroesophageal reflux] during infancy and childhood was thought to be a consequence of absent or diminished LES tone [lower esophageal sphincter, which is sometimes also referred to as the Cardiac Sphincter due to its proximity to the heart]. Hi. I take Prevacid, which is a little pricey, even with insurance. However, there is another one, Aciphex, which was about 30 dollars cheaper. I am back on the Prevacid as the Aciphex didn't work as well ( for me...I was on Prevacid for years and only switched because of the cost...65 dollars). You may want to ask about that. Also, I was told my pharmacist that otc prilosic works well too.
prevacid or dexilant etc are meant to take about 2 months, myself and many other people have been on it for years! acid reflux can be caused by TOO LITTLE ACID, so maybe the medication is making it worse, now i am feeling the side effects? (nausea and stomach cramping off and on for last year) or perhaps Apple cider vinegar does neutralize the reflux?
I bet of all the people who have reflux 95% can be helped with ORGANIC APPLE CIDER VINEGAR....
So far I have tried Prevacid, Aciphex, Prilosec,Protonix, and Nexium. Aciphex gave me bad side effects and Nexium made my reflux symptoms worse. Prilosec did absolutely nothing for me.
I was successfully treated for H. Pylori in Nov 07. Since then I have been suffering from Water Brash and now heartburn. I don't know where to turn. My GI now wants me to take Zegerid(isn't this med just like Prilosec with sodium?).
Any input will be greatly appreciated.
I read that that surgery is fine for acid reflux but not as effective for bile reflux and that for bile reflux you would need that surgery (diversion surgery) that makes the bile flow lower into the digestive tract so it isn't irritating your stomach. I have put off any surgeries because I'm afraid the wrap surgery won't work. My doctor is a top surgeon for reflux but not the other surgery. I just don't know what to do.
I saw my GI specialist and he recommended I start taking reglan again because the gastroparesis might be causing the reflux. However, I am aware of the dangerous side effects of reglan and am wondering if I continue to take the prevacid daily without reglan, could I still develop Barretts esophagus if the prevacid is stopping all the acid production in my stomach?
t switched, try switching and see if that in itself provides any relief as Nexium seemed to work much better for us than the Prevacid. My little guy can't talk so I don't know what he was feeling in terms of pain but he would cough and cry all night long. He's 3 now and this was from about 12 months to 2.5 years that he did this. Keep us posted!
I took Nexium 20mg for 11 days and had to stop because of its severe side effects. Then I took Protonix 20mg for 13 days and had to stop because of severe burning in my mouth, chest and tongue. I tried taking Riopan and Gaviscon in December and January without success because they caused a nausea and a burning tongue. Then I had one pill of Zantac 75mg and I suffered hard from abdominal cramps for one day and a burning tongue for 7! Etc..etc...
My husband has acid reflux as well, and after a few prescription medications, he found that Prilosec was the only thing that helped him. You can buy this over-the-counter. Trouble swallowing is part of acid reflux, and before Prilosec, my husband had this really bad. It would scare him so much that he'd have to get up and walk around because he felt like he was choking. I bought him the Prilosec and that never happened again.
