My 19 year old daughter has been treated for acid reflux for the past 2-3 years. October 5, 2007 her gallbladder was found to be functioning at only 3% and was immediately removed. 1-2 weeks after surgery she felt fine. As the weeks have gone on she has had pain in her esophogus, constant burning sensation in her stomache and nausea 3-4 times per week. Time of days doesn't matter or empty or full stomache doesn't seem to have any affect. She had an upper GI and an endoscopy.
what works for one person may not work for another, in my case what works for me 1 week my not work the next, my body gets used to the product- so my Dr. tells me. OTC products can be doubled if the strenght on the box does not work---Try Pepsid AC they have a 10 & 20 mg....(the perscription for that is Axid 300mg)....I have been on them all, but not the ones with Sodium Bicarbonate like Zegerid OTc....
I had a Barium Swallow, and reflux was found, but no hiatal hernia was found. She prescribed Prevacid, which I have been taking for several months now, and said I should take a Pepcid AC before exercise.
This method has been working much better than anything tried before. But I feel like I am completely dependent on the Pepcid for relief (as it gives me far more relief than my rescue inhaler). I'm not sure how much is too much of the Pepcid.

many doctors will approve Zantac or Pepcid AC...so give your doctor a call in the morning, no need to keep suffering...they should give you an idea of what you can use and you should be able to just swing by a pharmacy to pick it up and hopefully get some relief tomorrow.
Try over the counter prevacid....it is a catagory b med that my pharmacist turned me on to.....it is like a wonder drug for my heartburn !!
dazy401, I too am experiencing the same problem. Maybe we can shed some light on eachother's situation. Here's how mine started and where I am today. BTW, I have no history of any health problems.
Out of the blue 2 wks ago, I started getting bloated and short of breath. It continued until it got worse 3 days later when I started to panic because I couldn't breath without taking a deep breath every few seconds. Chest X-Ray, EKG and D-Dimer tests all came back negative.
My daughter also takes pentasa and WAS taking prevacid. The prevacid didn't seem to help her and our GI switched her to prilosec. My daughter has had no complaints with the prilosec. Both prevacid and prilosec have the same actions so they do the same things. The only interaction that I know of with prevacid and penicillin is with a type of penicillin called Ampicillin and it may inhibit the absorption of the prevacid.
AC went out in the house this evening. It is HOT!! Landlord said he would come tomorrow to look at it but that is not soon enough! Lol. I am south Texas...I know it could be worse but with this pregnancy I am always hot as it is and so no AC makes it worse. I have 3 fans on me and that's helping some. Plus I LOVE to sleep with it really cold and sleep better with it cold. Its going to be a LONG night!!
My AC 1 values have been just slightly above the "normal" values for 2 lab tests in a row.Should I be concerned that I possibly have diabetes? When I say barely above normal, I'mtalking 5-10 points over the top of the "normal" value.
I am having a problem with taking my Prevacid 4 hrs. after Synthroid. Right now my routine is to take Synthroid when I first get up and 6 AM. an hour later eat something void of fiber (usually egg sub.) The 4 hrs. later I take the Prevacid and have another small meal (cereal usually). The problem is something is causing a bad taste to come back in to my mouth sometime after all this and I am thinking it is because the Prevacid really is not being taken prior to eating.
I figured why waste $125 to have the doc tell me what I knew already - Acid Reflux, take my h2 blocker, watch what I eat and lose weight. I did try switching from my 2x a day generic Pepcid ac to 1 a day Prilosec OTC for 21 days, but didn't get any help from that, even combining Prilosec with Pepcid. Over the next couple of months the pain grew in intensity and duration.
I finally made an appointment and saw the doc last week.
I just went to the doctor to get blood tests and make sure that my drinking has not already damaged my body beyond repair. My doctor gave me Prevacid for some stomach issues I have been Having. Does anyone know if it is safe to take it when I have been drinking? I am really trying to stop but I am having problems with the withdrawls so I am trying to wean myself off. Any one have any opinions? I would hate to do more damage when I ma trying to correct already done damage.
Welcome to the gastroenterology community! Did you just start taking prevacid? Have you eaten anything red recently? Are you constipated? Do you have hemmorhoids?
My bone density plummeted from 15% above normal to 25% below normal in 6 years (post menopause). Could Prevacid excellerate bone loss. I don't have many risk factors for osteoporosis, no family history.
I take Synthroid, Verapamil, Prevacid. I eat lots of dairy, greens, almonds. I exercise daily.
I eat a fairly low carb diet, minimal alcohol, caffeine, and cola.

After taking Prevacid, I gain my appetite back. The problem is, I have develope new symptoms after taking prevacid for 1 week. I am having very loose bowel movements, blood on the toliet paper when I wipe, indigestion, lower abdominal pain. Most importantly is I am having more frequent heartburn and chest pain, which I don't have when I am on the H2 blocker.
Started Prevacid and also Strattera for ADD. We were able to wean off of the Prevacid and just stick to Strattera, as our peds thinks the Strattera helps him with the anxiety related to the GERD, and therefore he had no complaints of symptoms of GERD. In March we went off of the Strattera, and within 4 weeks the symptoms of GERD re-appeared ( Not eating, coughing, feeling like something is caught in his throat.) We went back on Strattera and Prevacid.
