Common Questions and Answers about Prednisone with antibiotics

Called my neurologist, who told me that prednisone has a potency of about 20% of dexamethasone, which has a documented interaction with Dilantin and the prednisone could have depleted my Dilantin levels. So I’m not here on the board to fuss about my general practitioner, but…is an interaction between prednisone and Dilantin common knowledge in this community? Also, how do you research Rx interactions? Thanks!
So, when prednisone is prescribed to alleviate an allergic reaction and then upon stopping prednisone a rash flares up "with a vengeance" - ----1]Could it be an allergy to a bacteria, since I never developed a fever when my hand got infected and then spread and then swelled up my face, and I never finished the whole dosage of antibiotics? ------2]What type of doctor should one seek, besides a dermatologist or an allergist?
I just got off the phone with the Doc, she said the prednisone would be OK and go on with it. It waas a month and a half after tx that my ears plugged First they said I had a lot of fluid in them and it felt that way. It sounds like a head full of locusts. 2wks of antibiotics, 2 different ones and my hearing had not improved.
While on the prednisone and antibiotics, I seem to run a low grade fever towards later afternoon/evening and start feeling crumby. Is this the affect of the prednisone? I figure, I will do the course of the treatment and if not feeling better,I'm going to ask for a referral! I thought a person should feel better after 48 hrs. of antibiotic treatment? "Well..it's been 3 days now. HELP PLEASE!!
I'm sooo itchy all over but i don't want to take prednisone if it's going to make the molluscum worse. Is the prednisone a bad idea?
I am a 70 year old woman with ADHD. My brain is aging along with the rest of me. With the help of the prednisone and a Z pak for a secondary infection and convalescence, the respiratory problems are gone, but I'm coping with the side effects of the prednisone including agitation, mood swings, greater distractibility, disorganization, incredible appetite increases, and gastritis.
Over the last year and a half she has been on two week courses of amoxicillin, baytril, clavamox, Remadyl, and prednisone. The vet did a sterile bladder urine culture (through a needle) with sensitivity which came back nonspecific (a huge bill for nothing). The vet says there is not evidence of it being a yeast infection, he sees bacteria on the microscope slide. I am at a loss to know what to do.
the steroid sprays are the way to go, either way, it's FAR better on your system than long term oral prednisone! Also, a good decongestant with a moistening agent, like Guafenisen (but be wary if you have high blood pressure/athlerosclerosis issues, as it can put you at risk for heart attacks)...All this should be monitored by ONE really good ENT Md! First and formost, find a good one, and stick with it! Also, I found acupressure (head/face) and acupuncture to be extremely helpful, also.
Hello everyone,I am in my 4th day taking Roaccutane with prednisone. I have started to get bladder discomfort, has anyone suffered from this before. I used to have tract infection but this one comes from the tablets. Please help.
The Prednisone I took in combination with antibiotics finally eliminate my sinus infection (it was a side of the treatement and I have suffered a lot from that), since then I don't have any more the sinus problem and don't have anymore fever (only once in few days), so I am not using any more Paracetamol or other fever reducer.
Now I am back on antibiotics so MS Dr. can't start me on Prednisone again until I am infection free. Has anyone used the solul-medrol or prednisone and good luck with it? I thought I would be good for a long time, but only a few days? Don't know if it is all because of the strep or if that is all the longer it helps for. The Dr. also said they might try Plasmapheresis but can't do that either until I am well.
Thank you for your reply. I was recently dx with SLE and was on a short term Prednisone treatment until my follow-up. I'm 37 now but when I was around 13-14yrs old I had "osteochondritis" in my knees and was pretty bad and the Dr. way back then put me on Methylprednisolone for a short time.
When I'm triggered by allergies - a lower dosage of prednisone works (about 40mg) with other allergy meds (nasoqart cq, and Symbocort are my lifesavers!). Hope that helps!
I'm okay on prednisone, I can get out now, keep up with my housework, and all that. Not able to work but at least I can do things. So how do I give that medication up?? I don't want the crap but I'm seeing no options. I've had Vit D def for quite a while now. B12 as well but it went back to normal and stayed that way after treatment. Low end of normal though. I am on a prescription for the Vit D.
So when I get a major flare I take prednisone for a few days to get the flare under control. I get shots on regular basis in my back. So I started to take prednisone again, and got a shot for pain in my shoulder, when the cushings syndrome came back full force. Every symptom. It has been a month now, and the symptoms have only increased. My eyes even feel puffy from swelling, as my wrists now. I am so uncomfortable. The fog in my mind is thick.
I know it's a pain to go and be seen when you have symptoms when you can buy otc yeast treatments but you are immunosuppressed with the long term prednisone so it's well worth proper testing to make sure you aren't having issues with a strain of yeast that needs more aggressive treatments too. they can send a swab off to the lab to check. if you are prone to yeast issues in general, check into either fem dophilus by jarrow or rephresh proB ( forget that company name ).
I have 10 mg Prednisone tabs with me but the directions are to take 40 mg for angioedema and gradually decrease dosage. I know that if I take this dosage I will be up all night but am really uncertain about how much I should take. Using Aveeno to sooth the welts with minimal effect. I empathize with anyone going through this experience. Any suggestions appreciated. Am thinking of thinking an immunologist since the allergist was absolutely no health.
however, I wanted to see whether their was any information regarding this issue. I performed a Google search and was unsuccessful in narrowing it down to my specific concern. Any information would be most appreciated. Lastly, for each of you living with HCV, keep your spirits high. Telaprevir and other medicines will radically change the SOC in the very near future. Vertex has indicated that it expects to file for a NDA (new drug application) in early 2011.
Can my asthma meds like prednisone make it worse? Becuse every time I get a infection I end up on prednisone pills too along with everything else. Do these make the antibiotic less effective?
My husband was hospitalized with an inner ear infection which was causing dizziness, vomitting, and severe ear pain. He was discharged with antibiotics, ear drops, and a 5 day dose of prednisone. He was unable to hear ANYTHING from this ear. He had a follow up with the ENT and they inserted a tube as they thought that would remove the pressure and allow the eardrum to move. He still cannot not hear anything and went back the the ENT and audiologist today.
Went to the dr today for a bite and he says it's either a bee sting or a wasp sting he gave me .20 mg of prednisone 3 pills for 10 days....why is that? I thought I should get an antibiotic.
Some heart palpitations, but not as often as with the higher dosage, but not feeling myself that much. Anyway, I think I may have a sinus infection - lots of sinus drainage and feeling really down. But with the thyroid problem, it is hard to tell what is from what these days. I have not been to the doctor for the sinus thing as they say if it is viral, they can't do anything, but it doesn't seem to be going away.
I'm assuming it's all related since I never suffered with sinus issues previously. I also have Lupus. Recently I started a pred burst with 60 mg x 5 d to 40mg on down. I'm currently on the 5th day and it isn't slowing down the mucus production well. Before when my Dr. would give me a break with a pred burst for this miserable mucus constant problem I would get some relief. This time it doesn't seemto be working. What could be going on.
Just continue to be up front with him and take those bottles with you!! Let me know what he says about your question and the effect the antibiotics will or will not have on your test. Best wishes and I'll be looking for your update...........
My mom is concerned about pnemonia too and wanted them to do an xray as well, especially with that pain in my back when I breathe (course with a cough like this), but they chose to throw a bunch of these meds at it... so far it's all ......cough, cough, cough........ My PCP has me coming back in on Monday, before I fly out Tuesday. As far as the cortisone shot (no clue on the dosage, did not have the brains to ask...
Usually, from what I read, the conditions you have are treated with lots and lots of antibiotics - however, prednisone is an anti-inflammatory. I am just a layman, but it would not be out of the question that with all that going on, that your inflammatory system would be out of wack too and that is why a course of prednisone probably had such an effect.
HI, My daughter also has a serious autoimmune disease, and has spent the past 5 years on steroids. She has repeatedly done several month courses of 60mg, and it certainly does change her appearance. The bad news is, right now while you are on that dose there is not a thing in this world to make the moon face go away (words straight from the mouth of her immunologist). The good news is it does go away. Many people find 10mg to be the magic number.
Whenever I get very anxious I just take a 2mg Valium, it seems to help. But this is me. You might just need something to help you with the prednisone and fuoxetine transition. Try to eat a healthy diet and perhaps not a good idea to take any herbal preparation until you are better. I used to take chamomile tea to relax and every time i took it I couldn't breathe, like I had a mini asthma attack. Later on I found out I was indeed allergic to chamomile tea.
If you have been diagnosed with colitis, talk with your GI and see what they suggest. Good luck!
