Prednisone weaning

Common Questions and Answers about Prednisone weaning

For me prednisone was both a lifesaver and the devil drug. I have Crohn's disease and if it were't for the pred I probably would have lost a good portion of my colon. Then I became prednisone dependant and every time I would try to wean down I got so sick-once my adrenals crashed and I ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks. I was never on a very high dose-maybe 40 to begin with and then tapered down. I was lucky I never got the moon face-but it did mess with my mind, emotions, hormones etc.
The first few days of getting off of it were hell. Temper fits, noise irritation, you name it. Getting better this second week. Two weeks to go and I'm done with it for now.
I would have noticed all of this if I had this going on before prednisone. The reason I was taking Prednisone was because I had superfical blood clots in both arms from two days of CAT scans with contrast. The doctors thought the dye caused the irritation in my veins and most likely my leg pain. Thank you so very much!
Should be temporary. I had the same thing upon weaning down to 5 mg prednisone, started at 60 mg and by 5 mg lots of aches/pains. Took a few wks but eventually the aches ceased. Hope you're doing well on the Imuran - it's working excellently for me. Hate prednisone's side effects!
Hello, Any drug should be started, discontinued or tapered only as per a doctor’s advice. Steroid weaning can mimic other conditions and is characterized by weakness, decreased appetite, nausea, weight loss, dizziness or fainting. Tapering the drug gives the adrenal glands time to adjust and produce its own hormones to return to their normal patterns of secretion. How quickly steroids can be tapered depends on the medical condition. It is best to see your physician and discuss your concerns.
Hi!I have a prednisone treatment since 4 months(100 mg a day to 0 mg a day) I'm actually taking 25 mg a day and noticed a moon face symptom since about a month . Is there anything i can do or take to counterbalance that situation?I should finish that prednisone treatment in 5 weeks....How long it takes to recover a normal face after that treatment????Thanks...
my 9 year old dog has been on prednisone for 6 weeks for ITP and we are weaning her off now.
I've been on tramadol for 8yrs. prednisone for only 2wks. I didn't like how I felt or acted on the prednisone my family can atest to that. Anyway,I also realized that I had an addiction to the tramadol b/c I was taking an average of 1000mg A DAY sometimes more.I wanted to know if there ANY alternatives to taking the tramadol.I went to the emergency room this morning(recommeded by my doctor)and they didn't know what to do with me.
I stayed the night at the hospital while they treated me with Prednisone, through an IV, Albuterol mixed with something else, and Ativan, because I told the doctor my heart felt like it was going to jump out of my chest from my high heart rate. They gave me intensive asthma treatment of Prednisone and Albuterol mixed with something else for the time I spent there. I never got any sleep the night I spent there.
I have currently been experiencing what I think is a cold but the symptoms are not typical and i was wondering if this is what is meant by prednisone masking infections? My body feels as if I were weaning down further on the prednisone when in fact I haven't tried to in 6 months--I've had severe fatigue, muscle aches, lightheadedness (feeling like I am going to pass out), nausea, heart rhythm irregularities, etc. I feel feverish, but don't have one.
It's awful and embarrassing. Anyway, my doctor is slowly weaning me off of the prednisone so we can see if that is the culprit. What do you all think? Could that be causing my potassium to be so low or is he grasping at straws? He just sounded so unsure about it.
About 3-4 weeks ago, I came down with a horrible case of bronchitis and a severe asthma attack - for which my doctor gave me an antibiotic and put me on prednisone - to stay on the prednisone at least until he sees me again the 11th of January. I've been on prednisone many times in my life for my asthma, lupus, arthritis - so it's not a new medication for me and I'm well aware of all of the possible side effects of it, especially when having to take it long term.
I have previously been on here for coming off Percocet from a misdiagnosis of Crohns Disease. I was able to get off Percocet in 2009. Anyways, after being treated with Prednisone for 5 months my body was destroyed and my kidney ended up tearing through my periteneal cavity and into my abdomen.
egads, woke up at 3 with ON and eyes hurt so bad am about to toss my cookies before I even have them. got out my new bottle of prednisone that I religiously carry with and the directions simply say : "take as directed" grrrrr that was one prescription I failed to make a copy of before I gave it to the pharmacist back in AR. Anyone on pred that would remember the doses?
I've been given prednisone 10mg for 30 days and was previously on 10 days of 25-50mg of HC. Is it ok for the liver and will it damage the adrenals or cause adrenal atrophy? thanks so much!!!
Hi, I saw your last post on our other heading and wanted to relate a couple things I learned about Prednisone. First, I was put on it when my Doc saw my thyroid antibodies were pretty high. He had me take 15 days of it divided as follows; 5-days of 30mg, 5-days of 20mg and 5-days of 5mg. Like Ar1282a, who was on it, I felt absolutely terrible when tappering off of it BUT, felt like I could climb mountains when it was in my system but not built up too high.
and stopped the Hydrocortisone...until I am through the Prednisone regiment. I feel better on Prednisone! I do watch what I eat all the time...I find on the Hydrocortisone I am ALWAYS looking to put something in mouth....hold water weight...and gained a lot more weight than I did on Prednisone. I am going to talk to my endo doctor about staying on Prednisone...they have to consider all my other issues....I don't think the Hydrocortisone is a fixer for Sarcoidosis....
Hi, I have been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I am 25 & am on Prednisone(60mg),salasapyrin(500mg)& Plaquenil(200mg) per day. I have developed a large moon shaped face. I am swollen in the face & neck & hate what it is doing to my face. Will this swelling & fluid go away when I come off the steroids in five weeks? It is causing me to be depressed & family have noticed the change in my face & are worried for my health.
A smaller cohort of 18 patients who underwent drug withdrawal at King’s College London England also demonstrated the positive predictive effect of non-auto-immune disease, as well as fewer donor-recipient HLA mismatches and low incidence of pre-weaning rejection history ( 16). http://topics.scirus.com/Operational_Tolerance_after_Liver_Transplantation.
The process of waking them up is the tapering - or weaning as it is called - slowing weaning the body off the external source to try to get the body to start working again. The problem is that if you had any issue before - and they often go undiagnosed for years as symptoms are vague. Plus weaning causes a great deal of pain. Prednisone has properties that fight inflammation so when it is reduced, pain is increased. It is hard to deal with but that is the hardest part of the weaning/tapering.
When my knees started buckling I immediately started weaning myself quickly off of the prednisone. Has anyone else out there experienced this? What can you tell me about the "steroid myopathy"? Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this and respond!
I just had my first hospitalization and iv steroids for over a week. Now I am weaning from HIGH doeses of Prednisone, Qvar, Singular, Abuterol. Every answer is more medicine to deal with effects of other medicine and I want to throw something (or someone). I am moving to the beach next spring and am very excited to see your research proves out my anticdotal experience of relieved breathing at the beach.
My vet prescribed 20 MG of Prednisone Q12H last week. Immediately my dog appeared to be having an adverse reaction.. as he was panting, nervous and shaking. I spoke with my vet and I tapered down... but he's still panting tonight and it is worrying me. Anything I can do to help him in the meantime ? As far as his diagnosis, we still aren't sure but have ruled out many other possible health conditions.
I would advise against weaning yourself off of the prednisone without your doctor's guidance. I would suggest you contact your provider and make an appointment to discuss your plan of action together. I am not sure what side effects you experienced with the Imuran. However it would be worth your while to discuss your next course of action with your prescriber and possibly go back on that medication.
While on the pred, I experienced insomnia, and slightly increased blood pressure, but my heart rate was around 60 and didn't change. since the 2nd day after weaning off of prednisone, my symptoms have returned (ms), but my heart rate has gone from 60 bpm to 80 bpm, and my BP has gone from 116/60 to 130/80. I am otherwise healthy other than benign PVC's and PAC's, and I take a 25 mg atenolol daily for those voluntarily. With that being said, has anyone else had this happen?
three months ago i received a shot of prednisone for fire ant allergies. i have a minor case of cirrhosis, the shot was 120mg, i was weighting at 135lb and in poor health. that night i experienced the first headache of my life. it was a sharp pain lasting a second right in the middle of my brain. next couple days i had a brain fog that was also new to me. naturally i did not take the steroid pills for weaning. and now three months later, my body has changed.
Prednisone is a mixed blessing. It is a hormone, a poloypeptide, and a signaling substance. While on prednisone the chances of getting many infections increases dramatically. It degrades the natural immune system. It reduces inflamation and the response to antigens, or non-self substances. In one study, with rats receiving daily doses of prednisone for six months every test animal developed multiple malignancies.
I am on and off prednisone and can never sleep when I am on it. It is a great drug for healing but can cause insomnia.
