Avatar m tn m wondering how people take oral prednisone, and is that similar to oral methylprednisolone? I know of 20mg prednisone/prednisolone tablets, but I keep reading that some people opt for 1,250mg oral prednisolone per day instead of IV. Thats an extreme amount of tablets per day. Is this correct? Also I read that they take the oral pred over 3 weeks, then again I read that its taken as the IV would be taken i.e - over 3-5 days. Which is correct? Pls help, thank you.
635835 tn?1272539383 One randomized study has been published which examined the area under the curve of oral prednisone compared to IV methylprednisolone.(9) Adult patients beginning steroid treatment for an MS relapse received either 1250 mg oral prednisone (n=8) or 1000 mg IV methylprednisolone (n=8).
1448748 tn?1312956208 When the study originated, many doctors were treating the condition with oral corticosteroids. The study looked at oral prednisone vs. high-dose intravenous methylprednisolone vs. placebo and found that the IV methylprednisolone followed by a tapering course of oral prednisone accelerated visual recovery by a few weeks. Recovery of vision occurs with or without treatment. The investigators found that the choice of regimen has no effect on final visual outcome.
Avatar m tn My neuro has given me oral methylprednisolone in tablet form to take in case of a relapse. I have requested for the tablets as I live in a third-world country and to get the IV medrol is not always accessible. Here is my dilemma: Each tablet is 16mg. If I get an acute relapse, I need to take 500mg per day for 5 days. This means that I will have to take approximately 31 tablets per day for 5 days (then taper down).
Avatar f tn I am wondering what kind of results has anyone had from the prednisone and how soon you may have noticed a difference. My biggest problems have been the shocking pains, tickling skin, and numbness in my hands. The numbness in my hands doesn't feel so bad as it did earlier today, usually it feels as if the circulation is being cut off or tightness. Thank you in advance!
Avatar n tn Since then I have been to the doctor monthly for a dexamethasone shot and either a prednisone or a methylprednisolone course. My (3rd) family doctor want me to see a pulmonologist but I swear its not my lungs. I have been told, bronchitis, reactive airway disease and asthma but nothing for sure just "possibly". I will give you the run down..
Avatar m tn Muscle/joint pain and weakness is a known side effect of prednisone (methylprednisolone), however it is one that should be reported to your doctor. They would be the ones to make the determination whether you should continue on the medication or if you need to stop taking it. Best of luck and please let me know what you find out.

Avatar n tn Have their been any studies regarding the use of methylprednisolone for the cessation of PVC's? I have significant PVC's that I feel throughout the day and evening. A few months ago I came down with a bad cold and ended up with bronchitis. I was prescribed the methylprednisolone pack and within a few days, all PVC's stopped! This lasted for two months during which time I resumed drinking two to three cups of caffeinated coffee per day.
158939 tn?1274915197 I know that long-term use of prednisone can block thyroid absorption but would a 6-day course of prednisone (METHYLPREDNISOLONE 4MG DOSPAK 21) block absorption enough to bump a TSH from 0.11 to 22.06 even while taking the required thyroid supplements???? The last time I *had* to get my TSH this high (for RAI) it took me 4 weeks and the low iodine diet to get my TSH this high (and I still had remaining thyroid tissue). BTW - my Free T3 1.8 (down from 3.9 three months ago) and my Free T4 .
Avatar m tn I have reason to think the person that used the needle was HIV positive. I started taking methylprednisolone 3 days prior to the incident due to a shingles outbreak and took it for 6 days - I took 6,5,4,3,2,1 per day of 4 mg strength. I took an HIV 3rd generation antibody test at 4 months after the exposure. Going through the internet, including Dr. Hook, I've read that prednisone may delay the HIV antibody from showing up on the test.
Avatar f tn is when I take methylprednisolone. Prednisone, for some reason, makes me delusional--I can hear grass grow, which is not a pleasant sensation, lol--but methylprednisolone allows me to walk, see, lift, etc. It does nothing for the autonomic functions, like blood pressure, breathing, swallowing, but it's something.

1297586 tn?1274105947 The only advice I can give is not to take prednisone. It gave me adrenal fatigue which has taken a year to cure (actually I am not totally cured yet). And - the adrenals interact with the thyroid. You have no idea how awful adrenal fatigue is. At times I could not walk across the room. And I had terrible panic attacks. This reaction to prednisone (or inhaled steroids) is not unusual. Merely devastating.
Avatar f tn Hello, I have been fighting some type of medical mystery for about two months. I took prednisone for about 5 years in my 20's for ulcerative colitis- which I now have a j-pouch for. Two times in November I took methylprednisolone for root canals .They were 5 day packs, starting out with24 mg and decreasing until the 5th day. One pack I didn't finish because I became sick. I took the first day and two pills on the second day.Constipation and head ache.
Avatar m tn 1000 mg of Prednisone = 800 mg of Methylprednisolone, which is IV Solumedrol. If just considering Prednisolone, it's the same dosage as Prednisone, so I guess the Methyl in the IV makes the difference. Anyway you look at it, though, these things are all very potent, and not to be messed with.
461838 tn?1255790216 I am on and off prednisone and can never sleep when I am on it. It is a great drug for healing but can cause insomnia.
Avatar n tn I was not familiar with "Perianal Abscesses" so I checked out a couple of sights. On one sight it did say that some people are more susceptible to perianal abscesses such as those that have: Diabetes, Aids or HIV, Crohn's or persons on medications that suppress the body's immune system, such as steroids (prednisone, methylprednisolone), or those undergoing chemotherapy for cancer ..........so I do not think that it is indictive of having Crohn's.
