prednisone vs medrol dose pack

My job is very demanding and I could not get away to see my neuro, so instead went to an urgent care where they prescribed me a medrol dose pak (21 tabs, 4 mg a piece) followed by an oral prednisone taper. I know this is probably not enough to make a dent in the exacperation, but can't take off an entire day to go to neuro and check into a hospital for the IV medrol. Are there any other options to manage this? Could my oral medrol pak be suffient? thanks!

t experience withdrawal, prescribed me a Medrol dose-pack and the muscle relaxant cyclobezeprine (Flexeril). Other medical/psychiatric conditions I have are hypothyroidism and bi-polar disorder/depression for which I take levothyroxine (Synthroid), divalproex (Depakote) and bupropion (Welbutrin).

Doctor thought to be allergic reaction so took me off and gave me medrol dose pack. Rash went away second day of dose pack but came back the sixth day after pack was finished. Rash lasted for a week with low fever before medrol. Doctor gave me prednisone which has not helped one bit. The pain in my joints brings me to tears and keeps me up at night. Lupus tests and ra negative. Doctor says it might be a connective tissue disorder. Doctor is sending me to dermatologist for the rash.

A hefty dose of oral steroids is 80 mg or so of Prednisone and about 60mg of Medrol. The dose used in MS is 1000mg of the Medrol equivalent and 1200mg of the prednisone equivalent. It isn't just the overall dose that is important, but how fast you increase the level. With oral administration the pills must dissolve and then be absorbed. By definition the level does not go up very fast. With IV administration the level is instantaneously high.

I read prednisone lowers immune system , thus making Lyme worse. Anyone know anything about "Medrol dose pack" 6 day steroid? Dr and pharma say its safe due to only 6 days use. I'm Sceptical. I can not find any info on this short duration 6 day pack during lyme. Trying to see if my pain can be reduced - safely though.

Today my doctor called Antivert and Medrol dose pack in for me because I have been so dizzy and lightheaded. I do not know how to describe it. The floor moves when I am not. It has been super hot here in Atlanta and I know the heat has a lot to do with it. Is this a good combo to help me? I am scared of the Medrol because I have an ulcer, I was told if I take it on a very full stomach I should be fine. Still worried.

After finishing my Z pack and see only a little improvement I went back to him and this time he prescribed me a Medrol pack. It helped with my breathing but not completely. I know there is still something wrong. I finished my medrol pack but coughing and difficulty of breathing is still there. I have night sweats when I started Medrol and got a tinge of blood in my phlegm twice so he ordered chest xray cause he was thinking that I might have TB but chest xray is normal.

I have just been weaned off of steroids after being on them for a month (MD put me on IV Solu-Medrol every 2 hours when I was hospitalized recently for bronchitis; followed by Medrol Dose pack which did not work, followed by prednisone). The side effects of the steroids were intolerable. When I was on them, I felt better and functioned better, but had horrible insomnia and euphoria.

I just came off of a medrol pack for bronchitis and crashed the week after coming off them. Come to find out they gave me the wrong antibiotic at urgent care so I am taking another round this week....breathing much better. So sorry you are fighting bronchitis as it is so long to overcome and feel better. I am still not over it myself but starting to feel much better.

I have COPD ---had Lung Volume reduction in 1996 . LAtely the desease seems to be coming back but I keep asking Doc about Phlegm stuck in my throat ( thought maybe a trip to ear nose throat man may help? ) making it hard to breathe . I'm interested in knowing if this Medral Dose Pak would help ?? Is it Steroid? Right now I'm taking 20 mg of prednisone to help with breathing .

Can low dose prednisone help with mild flare ups like numbness in leg and burning sensation related to relapse remissive ms ? I've had flare ups a couple times sincey official dx in march. It sea to help after. Few days I need some guidance I had trouble walking on Friday and left work early. My doctor said to take a 5mg prednisone and elevate it. It didn't help I tried to reach him but couldn't so I took 5mg 3 x a day last 3days and twice today.

OOps, I should have read the title of the discussion. The oral dose of Medrol (methylprednisolone) that it would take would be the same - 1000mg. This is likewise a huge dose. On the Medrol Dose-Paks, the first day's very high dose is 24 mg. You get the same picture. My MS neuro won't consider using oral steroids except for a taper after the IV infusions alos.

I think this will serve you well, LA. I got lots of hunger pangs on prednisone. Even right after I ate, but since it's a low dose and if you are able to ignore them (I worked hard on doing that...lol) you'll should be fine. What dose did they start you at? Prednisone reduces the inflammatory response. A asthma flareup results in bronchial spasms twisting etc. causing wheezing and sever shortness of breath. These spasms are a inflammatory ressponse to a allergan trigger such as pollens or cigarrete smoke or anything you may be allergic to. Stress can also have severe bad effects on asthmatics. As well as COPD patients. Doctors know the bad effects of this drug. They use it with caution. Only keeping you on it as long as necessary.

Also, I'm on prednisone often for Lupus flares. Uh, if you don't have a sleep disorder you will once you're on steroids ;) Just sayin' it makes me climb the drapes.

My 12 week test was negative for HIV and hepatitis c after a needle stick, but I was taking a medrol dose pack for 3 days before my 6 week test and I had a kenalog shot a week before my 12 week test. I read that those drugs interfere with a test and that it can take 6 months to develop antibodies. Is my test really accurate?

My daughter had a severe sinus infection with fluid/ear pressure buildup so painful, the doctor prescribed 20 mg of Prednisone, taken 3 times a day (60 mg) for 7 days, reduce to 2 for 2 days, then 1 for 1 day to keep from 'damaging her ear drum because the fluid buildup was so bad'. I had to call doc tonight cause my blood sugar went up to 272 and I don't take anything for diabetes..have been in a non diabetic state since losing weight aic was normal...frustrating. He had me take a small dose of insulin to protect myself...can't wait to finish this round of solu-medrol so I can get back to normal. If it doesn't work? probably won't do it again.

Exactly - the med is the same, the strength is the same - the pack is just an easier way for your doctor to prescribe it rather than actually figuring out how many pills to prescribe - and also probably easier on the pharmacy for them not having to write out all the instructions on dosing.

Over the past 12 months have taken medrol dose packs for fluid in the ear. When do I have to become concerned about side effects. How much is too much. Have recently had a flair up tinnitus and doctor has prescribed dose pack for me if I would like to try it.

I am on and off prednisone and can never sleep when I am on it. It is a great drug for healing but can cause insomnia.

For those of you who have had to get the solu-medrol treatment IV for 5 days, how did this affect you and your body? It has been a couple weeks since I stopped the out-patient treatment for the IV. I am still awake a lot of the time when I should be sleeping. I got about 2 hours of sleep last night, and today, I lay down to rest and I can't still.

The therapy is now behind me (at least the 1000mg/day) I am now on a tapered dose of prednisone tablets and looking forward to hopefully never needing Solu-Medrol again, BLECH :) Thanks, Kenny
