Unfortunately, there's no way to completely avoid weight gain or moon face as a side effect from prednisone. They are both known, common side effects and many people who have to take prednisone get them. I know about them first hand - I've had to be on prednisone quite often and often at VERY high doses, and I always get the moon face and weight gain with it, even if my eating/exercise habits don't change a bit.
you are holding an ACE of spades and when its time to come off the drug it'll be time to show your cards. I wish you nothing but the best!!
Hello and hope you are doing well. Weight gain and moon face are the side effects of steroid therapy. As you have been on long term, please don't venture to discontinue, without consulting your doctor. He will check the status of your hormones and will formulate a plan to taper the dose and he may prescribe alternate medications to help with polymyalgia. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Hi, Long-term side-effects include Cushing's syndrome, weight gain, osteoporosis, glaucoma, type II diabetes mellitus, and depression upon withdrawal.
I have vasculitis and was in the hospital on 150 mg IV Solumedrol for 1 week and have been on 80mg a day since Oct. 6th. I have the abd bloating, moon face and hump neck and shoulders. I know it is the side effects but was wondering if anyone has any ideas for relief of it. My back hurts as well I do use a heating pad on it and sometimes it helps but the neck, shoulders, and stomach are so uncomfortable. Does anyone do anything that helps with this?
I am a 25 year old woman (currently weighing around 126 lbs) in the process of being diagnosed with Lupus. I've experienced the following for 5+ years: burning/tingling sensation in my head/scalp, memory loss, extreme fatigue, confusion, mood swings. I have gone to several neurologists with no luck and finally visited a rheumatologist - she took 15 viles of blood - some of which did come back positive.
I suggest you read up on the side effects really good. Not everyone has the same effects. I did not gain weight but it caused me a lot of anxiety which made me think something was wrong with me. The prednisone made me feel great, took away the pain, started to shrink my mass. I was on it for about 6 weeks all together but as soon as I started tapering off, abscesses started again.
I had taken it wayyyy back when i was having surgery on my left elbow, but it was a way stronger dose and it made me have the moon face, swollen ankles and i hated it. I cannot even tell im taking this now. I just want to hear some stories about this drug.
Supposedly Entocort will cause less side effects than Prednisone, like the moon face you experienced. So, chances are better that you won't get it again. But you could explain to your physician that you got the moon face before and you are concerned you will again, and then ask him if there's some other category of medication he can give you.
She is currently on the Prednisone medication, taking 40 mg a day. She would like to know any side effects that others have experienced taking this medication. Does anyone have any thoughts as to how long she might be on the Prednisone medication? Her ast level was 451, alt level was 471, as of April 16th. She just started the prednisone. She's been on it for 2 days. Any comments or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Though my Esr and CRP are now normal , and disease activity is low , it is the serious side effects of the steroids that concern me . Will the moon face ever really go away ?? My face has bloated to thrice its size. I've put on around 10 pounds. Everyone keeps telling me to excercise but i have severe muscle pain almost everyday .. My bone densitometry shows osteopenia..And i keep getting repeated skin allergies and other infections..
And I thought I was on a high dose (up to 40mgs, mostly 25 mgs, for 3 months). You need to be very careful. Prednisone has far worse side effects than the temporary moon face. Basically, it accelerates the aging process of the body, especially the connective tissue (tissue and bones). I felt like I aged one year for every month I was on the medicine. It's kind of too late though to worry about the side effects now. You still need to be careful when weaning off the medicine.
(and the reason that may be true is simply because the virus has been effectively and permanently ERADICATED) Lastly, remember that prednisone does have significant side effects whether or not you are SVR or have never been infected with HCV. But if you have a good doctor that knows you are SVR and a serious allergy or health condition that warrants its use, then in my opinion I wouldn't avoid taking it if I really needed it.
The Cushingoid appearance may occur rapidly. - Moon face- due to accumulation of fat in cheeks. - Buffalo hump - accumulation in back side of neck region. - Retroorbital fat deposition can even cause protrusion of eye ball. This is a major concern with long term therapy. With vigorous exercise and activity, there will be no weight gain but still there will be abnormal fat distribution. The peripheral fat decreases and central fat increases.
Have for several years. Have the moon face, buffalo hump and all. But I'm alive so who cares. I wish you luck M. And good to see you are still up and going Anna! God Bless, L, P.
my friends would notice my sudden weight gain.. (i gained about 10 lbs in just a month) and my head turned like a round ball (so-called moon-face)..i felt depressed about it when i look myself in the mirror and taking a glance in my camera photos...im now on my 3rd month of taking this steroid and my doctor advised me to lessen the dose from 2 tabs to 1 tab per day .as of now im having a planned and balanced diet..
The side effects I had from the steroids was hot flashes, facial flushing, increased night sweats and weight gain. I sweat a lot normally. I'm on Wellbutrin and it's one of the side effects but while I was getting the injections it was horrible. I'd sweat for no reason just sitting in my office chair. My night sweats got 10x worse. Everything has finally calmed down now 2 months after my last injection. I gained 10lbs in a month and I'm still trying to get rid of it.6 to go.
Has anyone experienced any bad side effects from the hcg shots? I am administering them myself and just want to know what to look out for.
5 mg is a small dose for a human but for a tiny cat it would be much different. Prednisone has helped many people but it does have side effects, espicially long term use. It causes mood changes, depression, erritability, anxiety. Humans need to take Calcium and vitamin D daily because it affects the bones. Some of the other side effects:, increased appetite, weight gain, water retension, stomach problems, muscle atrophy, difficulty sleeping.
I was reading about numbness and tingling in hands and feet and you make several references to long term side effects from quinolones. What do you reccomend in lieu of these antibiotics? I have recently (today) been prescribed Levaquin..Originally prescribed Keflex, but I had an allergy to amoxicillin 1 year ago--1 hive and some facial swelling--post dental surgery. At that time, I was put on prednisone and amoxicillin post an extraction--per the oral surgeon -"it was routine".
From what we were told by our endocrinologist, if you are taking the medication for Addison's Disease (or adrenal insufficiancy) you will not get the side affects of weight gain, moon face, etc. because your body is so low on the cortisol that by taking the oral meds is bringing your body up to normal, when these side affects ususlly happen, it is from an overamount of cortisol in your body, such as taking it for asthma, arthritis, etc.
My guess is that what you're experiencing IS from teh prednisone and should dissipate in a few days. I've been on prednisone quite often in my life and I also experience the same thing sometimes - my face will get beet red, feel hot to the touch (but I'm not running a fever) and will feel tight and dry.
as you didn't produce enough cortisol to handle your condition to start, but it is worth investigating if there may be a chance), you are looking at a year on dexamethasone, which is very strong and may cause side effects you can't handle (think of it like all of what prednisone does, good and bad, multiply the strength by 10, and add the impact of high dose aspirin-- it has a bizarre secondary effect like NSAIDs).
moon face, high blood pressure, profuse sweating, irratibility, inability to deal with stress, and that is not including the side effects I get to look forward to in the next 10-15 years. I hate it so much that I have started weaning myself off of it with out my Dr's guidance. I just can't take it anymore! The imuran was working really well but they had to suspend it for a while because of adverse effects.
I still have a lot of the so called thyroid looking effects such as moon face, enlarged neck, swollen tongue with scalloped edges, puffy eye lids, buffalo hump at the back of my neck, so much hair loss that I have a baseball sized bald spot on the top of my head (and I'm a woman so this isn't good at all!), hair chanced color from natural auburn to gray-white within a short amount of time an changed texture and is now very thin. I also have brain fog, body aches, chronic fatigue and depression.
The symptoms you are experiencing I believe totally are related to the prednisone and its side effects. Some of them are secondary side effects, i.e., increased blood glucose will cause increased thirst and urination, as well as vision changes. Everything I know about prednisone is that at about 5mg IS where your own adrenals SHOULD kick in and take over, however, I think we both know that what they SHOULD do and what they actually do are two very different things.
So I am contemplating beginning treatment for this, but fear the possible side effects. From what I gather, the steroid dose is pretty high. Is this right? What side effects have you experienced?
Okay hears the deal I was put on prednison when I was 17yrs old along with imuran, now i know the effects of prednison obviouly, it being a steroid there usually are some weight gain and moon face etc as common side effects. Now I'm 19yrs old and they have me on cellcept. I have always been extremely active even to due to my fatigue but I cannot loose a pound, I will work out 24-7 and change my diets often to see if anything changes and...nothing.
