I have just been weaned off of steroids after being on them for a month (MD put me on IV Solu-Medrol every 2 hours when I was hospitalized recently for bronchitis; followed by Medrol Dose pack which did not work, followed by prednisone). The side effects of the steroids were intolerable. When I was on them, I felt better and functioned better, but had horrible insomnia and euphoria.
And no, they should not make you worse, though I have noticed an increase in symptoms for the first day after an infusion and do not understand it. Howver, steroids have their own st of side effects which can make you feel crummy.
I too have a lot of strange side effects that increase later in the day and then I wake up fine only to have the side effects increase again during the day I guess as the drug is building up in my body??? My side effects include changes in my personality, euphoria, depression, confusion, anger, and then I just don't care! It can be pretty overwhelming AND scary the first time but I figured that if it is going to help the other symptoms in the long run it is worth it.
There is a growing literature showing that these drugs can be used for a long time, with few side effects and that addiction and abuse are not a problem," said Dr. Russell Portenoy, a pain specialist at the Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Dr. Portenoy and others say the worst side effect may be the scorn and discrimination that some patients suffer from their families, employers and even the medical world.
2. Are there any potential permanent side effects? 3. Obviously with asthma, he will eventually need another steroid injection. Is it likely he will have the same reaction with another kind of injection. A lower dose is out of the question. His doc said he can never have it again. Sorry if this is long. It really scared me. Thanks in advance.
I always advise people to talk to their doctors about drugs - for example SSRI drugs which can caused serious side effects in some BP's including mixed mania and suicidal thoughts. Everyone is different so its vital to work with your doctors to find the right mix of drugs.
hi Ashley, The trick with Steroids is they do not help disease outcome they can only help temporarily with symptoms. They can also cause harm with bad side effects. They also cause a rebound affect, meaning you can get worse once you are off them. For these reasons Doctors are not always thrilled to use them. Unfortunately a lot of medicine is slow.
I took my standard poodle to the emergency vet yesterday because his eyes (he has cataracts) looked like they had a film of blood on them. After having an eye exam I was told that he has uveitis caused by an underlying disease. We had chest xrays done which showed abnormalities, and after an examination the vet discovered that my dog's lymph nodes were enlarged. My dog has been stumbling for the past two days when on walks, coughing & panting after walking upstairs.
the first few days, but that was it as far as side effects were concerned. Unluckily, I accidentally left an old patch on when I applied a new one. I tend to sweat the patches off in the summer and use tegaderm as a cover. The tegaderm came off but the patch stayed on - unbeknownst to me. Within two hours I was sweating like a pig and had to remind myself to keep breathing. After some examination, I found the old patch still in place and figured out I was overdosed. Not fun.
Pain patients on prescribed opioids don’t have adverse consequences — they may have side effects from opioids but they don’t have these types of adverse consequences (eg, loss of a job, organ damage). The third element of addiction is the preoccupation or obsession with obtaining, using, and recovering from the effects of the drug. Tolerance is the need for more to get the same effect. Tolerance is a big issue in prescribing opioids.
It is clear that there are a lot of misconceptions and fears about them, so this is a very basic discussion about taking steroids, their actions, side effects, long term effects and potential dangers. First, we need to be clear that we are talking about the body's natural steroids and not about the anabolic steroids misused to gain abnormal strength and muscle mass.
1) For those of you who have had this treatment before, what kind of a heads up can you give me regarding side effects and recovery time? and 2) Is there anything I can do to lessen the negative side effects? I'm a bit worried about doing this, as I haven't heard the best things about this treatment.
I've been on this steriod since November. But this is a narcotics site so I won't go into that. The side effects are yucky. enought. So good to hear from you. You all rock here.
Oxyfast is just a concentrated liquid form of oxycodone, so the risks, side effects, abuse issues would be the same as any other oxycodone or hydrocodone (Percocet, Vicodan, Oxycontin) The drug references list them as equipotent milligram for milligram..
Vioxx helped but then I developed some side effects to the Vioxx. My doctor suggested Ultram. I knew it was not considered a controlled substance. Boy do I ever wish I had taken the time to do a little more research! I only took the Ultram for 3 weeks, but I did take the maximum dose. After all I thought I was home free, right? This is really benign stuff here....no danger with Ultram.
One of the known side effects for the majority (not everyone) of low dose steroids is euphoria - plus an increase in the feeling of well-being - plus, also an increase in energy. This makes it easy for people to believe that the low, oral dose is having a good effect on the disease. I think some neuros get sucked into this also. Surth - You asked if the use of IV drips of steroid can be sufficient for relapses. The answer, if you read all of the above is probably not.
Not my fault that I had to snicker at the last line there because every time I talked to my Doctors (plural) about medications and side effects they told me that Tramadol was NOT the problem. Then there was usually another drug put on top of that Tramadol. And they told me to take more. I always thought it was the other drug, not the Tramadol. Yeah. I was wrong. It makes me very angry that these Doctors know and aren't telling people. I don't believe that they are ignorant.
I had the same effect with Depakote. Klonopin is the only drug I can tolerate with no side effects at all. I have taken as much as 8 mg at a time when really stressed years ago and did not even get tired. I don't do that anymore, I follow the correct dosage, 2 mg four time a day. It works great for me. Oh by the way, (wiskey) drinking will make you sick if you take alot with a benzo.
Fortunately, we have the internet through which we can research the side effects and long-term effects of all this nasty stuff we're putting into our bodies in the quest for pain relief. And that's exactly where I spent hours and hours, even days, trying to find the truth about each of the drugs the Drs here were suggesting.
Sounds messed up when I read it all back to myself Thanks for the small dose of reality and a little tough love I need it sometimes to remind myself about the brighter side of things and there is a brighter side of things for sure!!
They are Dihydrocodeine,I find 180mg provides a medium quality high better than 300mg codeine, but not as good as dihydrocodeinone(hydrocodone)25mg.unlike codeine, dihydrocodeine can be used IV and is more sedative than codeine. In Australia it is available OTC in 7.5mg Dihydrocodeine/300mg aspirin tablets. 180mg is approx equal to 300mg of Codeine, except also qualitatively better Euphoria and analgesia.A box of 24 tablets provides 180 mg Dihydrocodeine and cost around $5(US $2.50).
off completely to get rid of side effects then start over - I also added Cytomel per doc (even he thinks this is a joke) and no matter how small the dose I was hyper, chest pain etc) so back to square one - also tried natural but only at doses 50mcg up to 100mcg - felt great but it also was too potent - anyway cut to the chase - I went back on the Armour in November but only @ 30mcg - have been great ever since - lost 5 lbs.
Be careful not to take over the prescribed amount though b/c NSAID's can have bad side effects if taken too much over a long period of time. You are being monitored by your doctor while on these drugs which is great because you need to have tests done (blood) to make sure you are not doing harm to your internal organs while on these drugs.
I went to my GP complaning of no sense of smell, saw a surgeon and surgery was recomended, I was given a prescription for Prednisone, a steroid, this gave me some sense of smell, and here's the but, I had the operation and still could not smell, so more Prednisone, well the upshot is that the steroids have caused my Osteo-Necrosis, this is when the heads of the long bones die, so have now had core decompression on one hip and the other totally replaced. Oxycontin.
