Avatar n tn Those sound like normal side effects of prednisone. Nasty drug but can save a dog's life. My golden has been taking 50mg daily for 2 months and the side effects are horrible.
Avatar f tn 11 yrs old is also on predinisone and having panting spells. She has allergies. She is now down to 5 mill a day. Is the panting a side effect?
Avatar m tn 5mg every day, but the pants started on 4/12/2014, so I took him to the ER, that is when they told me this was a common side effect of Prednisone. On 4/14/2014 I took him to our regular Vet and we have started the Prednisone taper, which I am comfortable with. My question is: He seems so uncomfortable, is there anything that I can do to make him breathe better or feel better? Or do we just have to let him "suffer" till this taper ends and the Prednisone wears off?
Avatar f tn It looks like your doctor is starting conservatively. Side effects of steroids include increased drinking, increased urination, panting, weight gain, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. If you feel that your dog is having trouble breathing, then he/she should be seen. If it is just increased panting, it is a side effect of the drug and not something that would make the doctor take he/she off the drug unless the dog was excessively agitated. I hope this answered your question.
Avatar f tn Two weeks ago after walking, she never stopped panting, and has been panting ever since. The only time she doesnt pant is when she lies with her head flat between her paws. Initially an urinalysis, thyroid profile, lab profile(CBC), lab profile (gen diag) were done. Then chest x-rays were done, and Prednisone, Ciprofloxacin, and Aminophyline perscribed. All these medications were stopped by the vet at intervals as she didnt improve.
Avatar f tn It never ceases to amaze me how many people will give their dogs steroids (prednisone) without understanding the effects and risks. Of course your dog is hungry, that's what steroids do. I have always sought alternatives to steroids with my pets, and have ONLY used them with two dogs that were terminal with cancer. And THAT was only in their last few weeks to buy them (and me) a little more time and comfort.
Avatar n tn However, the high dose of prednisone can cause side effects such as enlarged pot belly appearance to the abdomen, and panting. Prednisone doses are usually decreased gradually over time to the least effective dose (lowest dose in which a benefit is still seen). The least effective dose can be determined by blood work, and should also hopefully be low enough so that a reduction in adverse symptoms occurs.
Avatar m tn His blood sugar was very low(40). The vet said to treat the symptoms and put him on Prednisone, 5 mg, twice a day. While it seemed to improve his blood sugar(I tested his blood), he had periods of excitement and heavy panting for hours. I was concerned about heart attack and I cut his dosage to 5mg three times a day, then 2. After a month of so, he started to develop a severe cough. Dry, but with almost every breath. This continues today, after 4 months.
3116756 tn?1341922971 Hind end very weak. She has stopped the anxiety.droiling,panting. Really want to try more the hollistic way.The overdose on prednisone really scared me. I feel we have really poisoned my dog.
Avatar f tn In my experience with dogs with any kind of end-stage disease, panting indicates stress - usually from pain. If the mass looks like it could come through the skin at any time, I think it would be reasonable to add better pain management to the mix. A little tramadol (for mild to moderate pain) would be a good place to start.
Avatar m tn You need to contact your Vet asap....these are serious side effects to not be overlooked...good luck.
Avatar f tn Yes, a lot of what you are describing are signs of chronic Prednisone therapy - muscle wasting to the belly, a pot-bellied appearance, an enlarged liver as Dr. Coyner stated, increased thirst/appetite/urination/panting, etc. I'd start with a thorough physical exam at your vet, and some blood work (he'll likely have increased liver function tests - ALK PHOS) from being on chronic prednisone.
Avatar f tn I agree with Ghilly. Make sure it definitely IS Lymphoma. You may need a second opinion. I dont know much about Prdnisone treatment, but take what Ghilly said very seriously. However, Prednisone may help him possibly short-term? As for Chemo, my feeling is that there isn't much that is "palliative" about Chemotherapy. Although dogs sometimes don't suffer such dreadful side effects as humans do, and CAN tolerate chemo better....
Avatar f tn I am also diabetic @ bood sugars are higher than usual is this a side effect of prednisone, have 3 more days on prednisone should I stop?
1759127 tn?1313672497 We were discussing the vaccine not long ago and, from what I read, it is supposed to be relatively safe with little chance of side effects. That being said, any vaccines should probably not be given to an animal with an already compromised immune system. Given a choice, I would probably opt to not give this vaccine and know that you sharing your experience may help someone in the future. 1580703 tn?1651904887 what disease have you been diagnosed with that calls for the prednisone? Do you know the side effects of that medication? Side effects from prednisone can include increased thirst and urination, increased appetite and weight gain, dull, dry haircoat, increased panting, vomiting, diarrhea, elevated liver enzymes, pancreatitis, muscle wasting and behavior changes ( depression, lethargy). Source: www.cloudnet.com Prednisone mainly acts to speed up the aging process of the body.
Avatar n tn s muzzle. Prednisone does work great, but the side effects can be very bad-diabetes and a suppressed immune system which will make kitty more vulnerable to infections. I personally use an INHALED steroid which are much less likely to cause those problems-I'm not sure if these are available to cats or not. I'd definitely ask the vet about that-it would control your kitty's symptoms and make him/her a much happier kitty!
Avatar n tn We are currently living outside the US and I am concerned about our 13 yr old beagle. We took her to the vet because of frequent panting and he said she had periodontal disease. He started her on a regiment of Prednisolone and Stomorgyl 20 once a day, 12 hrs apart for 7 days. Three days after the initial visit, we took her back for blood work before a cleaning. The red and white blood cells were within normal range but the hemoglobin was higher than it should be.
Avatar n tn It worked on my dog, but it s a dangerous drug and can have side effects. There is a new drug from the UK called Trilosan (spelling?). It's not available in the U.S. but you can have it shipped here. It does not have the dangerous side effects of Lysodren. My dog did have a set back around the holidays...her cushings was getting bad...
