Prednisone for respiratory

Common Questions and Answers about Prednisone for respiratory

My father was being treated with prednisone for a lung problem. He's down to 10mgs/day. Everytime they try to taper him down, his breathing problems reoccur. Can your body become "addicted" to this drug so that you may not ever be able to come off? The tapering is very slow, 1 3/4mgs lower every other day.
At birth he had pulmonary hypertension unknown etiology and was placed on ECMO for 3 days. We nearly lost him. Long story short, his lungs have been perfectly healthy up until about 2 months ago. He had an acute onset of wheezing, retractions, dry hacking cough. X-ray showed a slight inflitrate. He was treated with antibiotics and was started on pulmacort and xoponex. 3 wks later, he had another episode. Symptoms all the same but this time x-ray showed bronchitis with no infiltrate.
My question is do you know of any other treatment that would work for my lung inflammation besides the prednisone. I would really like to get off that med. Thanks.
Some reasons for coughing: First, Heart Disease- With Heart Disease, the weak heart cannot pump as well...Fluid builds into the lungs causing the cough..The cough is usually MOIST like they're choking on congestion...Actually, they are...The cough is worse in the mornings & during periods of running, playing & excitement....Fluid will show in an xray..... Next- Kennel Cough- This is a virus and antibiotics will do nothing.....
If you suffer from these disorders you know the medications you need. For asthmatics, Albuterol Sulfate emergency inhalers, Prednisone, Ipratropium Bromide, an expectorant, and optimally an electrically operated albuterol sulfate inhaler. You will be surprised to find that there are 12 volt air compressers available for automobiles and fish tanks that can provide the compressed air supply. Adding a filter (but NOT fibreglass!) would help. If you are unsure of the filtering material use none.
I have had a chronic respiratory illness, with sudden onset about 2 months ago. Treatments have included 3 round of antibiotics, nebulizer treatment, LOTS of prednisone, and Flovent inhaler. Rather than getting better on these meds, I am getting weaker, and my breathing is not improved. I have developed "moonface" from the prednisone, as well as a very uncomorftably disstended belly, and I think my hair is starting to fall out.
Some advice please,Dr Tinkelman, I am 74 & over past 6 years several diagnosis: MycoPlasmaPneumoniae, horrible with no treatment of asthma symptoms, next treating asthma symptoms, then finally diagnosed with a form of ABPA. Reaction to aspergillus under skin & high IGE 2200 but no evidence of blood antibodies. Treated with 15mgs prednisone every OTHER day for 3 yrs w/exacerbation occasionally. Last Dec "11 was able to get off prednisone & best yr ever until now.
What lead to me being diagnosed was a terrible respiratory infection that put me in the hospital for 5 days. I am currently on prednisone, plaquenil and imuran. I guess my main question is am I the only one that gets chronic bronchitis. Everytime I turn around I have bronchitis again and am back on antibiotics. I don't know what to do. I can't miss any more work but feel terrible. I am sick again after just finishing two rounds of antibiotics less than a week ago. Any suggestions???
Thanking physicians who accept my need for less oral prednisone for asthma exacerbations with respiratory infections. I appreciate the steroid oral inhalers and nasal inhalers as a better way to reduce mental agitation affects on my old brain.
possible explanations for this would include, 1) that these episodes were not reflective of bacterial infection by one of the more common bacteria but to an uncommon bacterium not evident on routine culture media, or related to the ABPA. You note that these recurred every other week between March and June &, at the same time on high dose prednisone. Were this ABPA you would likely had a response to the prednisone. Did you?
I got over the cold symptoms but the breathing issues are still here. I went in yesterday to a small clinic that prescribed me to an inhaler, Prednisone 20 mg (2 times a day) and Azithromycin 250 mg for 5 days. Then, when picking up my prescription I got the flu shot right at the pharmacy. I still couldn't breathe by the end of the night and went up to the E.R. but same thing, sent home and really, something feels really really wrong right now.
The “improved breathing” is a good sign but your continuing to have, “pains in my chest and I'm constantly boiling hot and sweating” is quite worrisome and strongly suggestive that the infection has still not completely resolved and/or that you may have developed a complication of the pneumonia such as an abscess. Given that possibility, it would be unwise for you to wait for “6 weeks.
This is the second time I've followed the pulmonologist orders for the prednisone with side effects worse than the URI. I meet with my primary doctor today for post-infection followup.
Of course, I plan on asking both my regular doctor and the neurologist about this also, but I was just wondering if anyone else has ever tried prednisone for migraines or noticed a change for the better in their migraines if they've had to be on it for other reasons.
Plus prednisone can cause or increase the amount you are refluxing. It normally didn't help my symptoms at all until the course was done because I have bad reflux. I would use this medication only as a last resort with a history of GERD.
For 2 months he has been having anywhere from 5 to 10 attacks a day, has been on prednisone 3 times in six months which I understand is dangerous to other aspects of his health. Are there any other options for him after prednisone is tried? He is miserable!! He also takes singulair, flonase, zyrtec, flovent and albuterol nebs, inhaler and liquid.
The cough only stops for a few hours once i'm so exhausted that i fall asleep for a few hours. I've had a CT (for elevated DDimer) and a chest xray within the past week, both clean. I'm now to the point where my normal breaths wheeze on the way in and out, and even if i try to breath through my nose, i still make wheezing. I'm clear so far as pertussis. No one has seen it fit to do a bronchoscopy as of yet. Can anyone provide us with some sort of answers?
A follow-up chest x-ray last week came back looking great, but I am still awaiting blood test results for CBC and IgG, IgM and IgA. Emergency room doc. ordered CT scan for next week to see if there is still some type of sinus infection. I still continue to have sinus pain on right side, especially around jaw and can feel pain in my top teeth. I also discharge a LOT of rubbery, thick mucous from the right side of my nose since the surgery...
Two days after completing the medicine I was rushed to ER and was diagnosed with a bad upper respiratory infection. I was given Moxifloxacin,Prednisone, and Albuterol. On Monday I finish my all my medication and my symptoms has return on Thursday..... Also Tuesday I seen the ENT doctor and he said the MRI showed I had pallets in my nose and I had a sinus INFECTION . WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?
I think she was in disbelief that I have lived w/ this all this years. Anyways, she gave me 50 mg of Prednisone to take for 7 days. I was apprehensive, but she reassured me that this would help me breath. Boy, was she right. Right after the very 1st dose, I've been able to breath thru mu nose not my mouth. Amazing!! I also have to use Nasonex spray, 1x/day and allergy testing. She indicated that I would need allergy shots for the next 3-5 years.
I have been on prednisone for 6 months trying to find out where this respiratory problems is coming from. Is it possible that the odor has something to do with my respiratory problem?
i dont remember the name and the purple one(advair) as his preventative and he is currently on 15ml per day of prednisone for 5 days...his cough has gotten better but worse.. the mucous is loosening up so the couch sounds really bad...
I was put on prednisone and rhen switched to inhaled steroids. I suffered thick tenacious phlegm and coughing so severe that it exhausted me. I have since refused both prednisone and inhaled steroids and am much better for it. I use natural anti-inflammatories. However I do not have IPF, but COPD. I don't know if that makes a difference. P.S. My pulmonary MD has a hard time accepting that I reacted in this way. Also the treatment caused me to suffer adrenal fatigue.
It may be that it initially helps to curve the meds or the need for so much or, as in our daughter's case, cut them out altogether. If you're considering a move, the best place for respiratory patients to live is on or near the beach because the salty air is therapeutic for the lungs. Most people can't afford to do that though, so the mobile mineral mine (salt pipe) is what the doctor should order!
As a side note to jmjm530's statement about durability - my PCP uses both cotisone and prednisone to treat everything from pain in my hands to respiratory infections and I'm still SVR after 3+ yrs.
I have had a chronic cough, chest pain, trouble breathing for 6 months now. I am using inhalers, and have taken prednisone twice with no results. I am now on Biaxin as we go through an elimination process and doing a peak flow meter. What could be going on that prednisone couldn't fix?
Dec 25, 2007 He ran a fever of 105 F and I rushed him to the er yet again they gave him medicine to bring down the fever and did a chest xray and it came back positive for pnemonia, this time they sent him home on Zithromax and prednisone. January 24, 2008 we were back in the er with breathing troubles. wheezing and hard breathing he was diagnosed with bronchitis and was sent home on prednisone.
Hi I often take prednisone in small doses (5-20mg short spurts) for allergic reactions of a systemic nature and lately Ive had to get cortisone shots for either allergy or tendon shoulder issues. My thyroid tested between 1-2 right where doc wants it but my hair is still slightly coming out down drain (more then normal) and I wonder what the cortisone shots and prednisone will do to my thyroid ? I mean will it tend to make me more hypo needing more synthroid or needing less?
I am a 25 year old female who for the past 4mths has been suffering from a bad, hacking cough and what seems like multiple colds (blocked nose, stuffy head, sore throat). I've not been 100% well in the last 4 months and seem to just get infection after infection going up and down all the time. As soon as I start to feel a bit better I go down with another one. The cough has never subsided.
Wow, They really have you on a lot of meds before my illness took over I was respiratory therapist for 15yrs but I can't work because of the avascular necrosis. Why can't they at least up your Advair to 500/50 2puffs bid. Have you been checked for GERD or allergy tested.Just be careful about the amount of prednisone you are taking. I was in the same situation and thought there was no hope until I my lung collapsed and I went to a different hospital and new pulmo's.
