I am taking a high dose of prednisone for cluster headaches and have been told that this would elevate the WBC. Does this indicate a systemic infection or is this something that can be expected with high dose prednisone.? I would appreciate anyone's viewpoints who know about these things.

In '98 I had a burst appendix with all the side effects - end result is 6 1/2 feet of the small intestine and 6 inches of the large were removed with the ic valve (so you know how careful I am about my diet) Even though I inject 1/2 cc B12 every other week, since nine days ago I am quite fatigued and have lost a pound a day. I am now 112 (yuk) I am very concerned. My WBC is border line low (4.2) and my MCH is mildly high (33.3) All other reading seem to be normal. Any ideas?
InHIV the white blood cells are decreased ,not raised. So raised WBC means an infection and inflammation only. Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted.
While on the prednisone and antibiotics, I seem to run a low grade fever towards later afternoon/evening and start feeling crumby. Is this the affect of the prednisone? I figure, I will do the course of the treatment and if not feeling better,I'm going to ask for a referral! I thought a person should feel better after 48 hrs. of antibiotic treatment? "Well..it's been 3 days now. HELP PLEASE!!
My doc said she will also consider the rescue drug if the total WBC gets below 0.9. My WBC is at 1.6 and my neutrophils are 0.6, they have been hovering around there most of my treatment, no rescue drugs yet, but have gone from getting blood test every 2 weeks, to getting them every week now to keep an eye on it.
My father had lymphoma for two years and never had unusual CBCs, except as the result of medications. E.g., prednisone can elevate WBC - but so can tremendous stress. The odd feature in your case, I think, is the steadily increasing number. Docs can see indications from scans on whether cancer is involved. You might instead have some unusual condition involved with your immune system - especially if you have an Fx of that.
I just received blood work results. My calcium is 10.6, my wbc is 4.24, and ALT is 49. Should I be concerned?
She was given steroid and antibiotic injections. Also given Baytril and Prednisone to take home and give daily. She gets Prednisone 20mg 3 times a day. She began heavy breathing on day 2 of the med and also seems to have belly bloating. Is this normal? I called my Vets office and all they said was to bring her in to get seen. But, we have already spent $1300 in one week alone on vet bills. Help!
Dear Doctor, I had a WBC of 20 and pinpoint rashes on my legs and an itchy rash under my skin- I've been exhausted for 2 years now. What could this possibly be (something from Indonesia?
told me that she was concerned about his labs and printed it off for me. these are the things that are flagged WBC 16.2 (H) Segmented Neutrophils 92.1 (H) Lymphocyte 3.7 (L) Lymphocyte Absolute 0.6 (L) Absolute Neutrophil 14.9 (H) He has always been a super healthy kid. He seems to be feeling better however his appetite has decreased and he is very pale and seems to not be quite as energetic as normal.
My CBC test was returned with anelevated white blood cell count at 15.4/ The absolute neuts were at 9.7 and the lymphs at 4.5. The monocytes were at 1.1 and eos at -.1. Basophils at 0. The platelet count was 267 and red blood cell count was 5.79. It seems only the white blood cell count was flagged with neuts, lymphs and mono. I am currently on a high dose of prednisone.
I am going to a GI dr No I have not had the blood or mucos associated with UC Yes I did have the stomach cramps and Diarrhea thats what made me get a colon examine At this time I am on Prednisone started at 40 mg a day now down to 30 mg a day and will start to tamper off so 6 weeks left on that. All biopsys where negative for UC he sent a blood test out to Cali and it came back positive for UC I dont know how sensitive the test are or if it has a lot of false positives.
GI suggested diverticulitis or IBS, though said it was unusal to start so quickly, and at my age. Did take antibiotics and cipro in March of 09 - didn't do anything to change the symptoms. Could these two things (blood test and stomach issues) be related? What does the low neutrophils and high monocytes mean? It scares me a bit.

It seems only the white blood cell count was flagged with neuts, lymphs and mono. I am currently on a high dose of prednisone. My questions are : 1) could these abnormal results be indicative of early HIV illenss even though I know the definitive test is the HIV test or can other things be at play? 2) What happens during ARS?
I would ask for a CBC w/ differential looking for high wbc and high eosinophils. ANA (anti nuclear antibodies), for large amounts of circulating autoantibodies to show autoimmune disease, ANCA which is also for autoantibodies linked to Churg-Strauss(CSS), a esr and crp to look for internal inflammation. Really he needs an entire autoimmune blood workup, which includes organ tests for specific organ involvement, which includes liver, and metobolic profiles. Most definitly a chest and sinus CT.
After 3 days of IV Rocephin antibiotics and oral Z pack my WBC count was still rising. It was not to high around 13 at that point so doc switched me to IV Zoscyn and added oral Levaquin. My lungs cleared up and sputum samples came back negetive but after 4 more days my WBC count went to 17.1. So my GP sent me to OU hospital in the city. They have no clue on what is making my WBC count so high. I had two teams of doctors looking after me there and no real answers.
Can someone have a chronic infection and still have a normal White Blood Count (WBC)? I feel ill. I cough up sputum and have muscle aches and stomach pain. Could some of the medicines the doctors have given me in the past have made an infection worse? Examples: I was given antibiotics (for 5 days-it was called Z-PACK). Would this have made another infection worse, if it was the kind that needed longer antibiotic treatment? (Like Lyme Disease, or H.PYLORI). I wa also given prednisone.
I had been on a short course of low-dose prednisone and Nasacort AQ 8 days before the blood work was performed (on that test my CD4 was 244 and my CD8 was 207). No other red flags jumped up regarding WBC counts, red blood cell counts, etc. to immediately suggest lymphoma/leukemia or other malignancies. Interestingly, while I was on prednisone and Nasacort AQ, my immunoglobulin levels were at the lowest levels of the normal range, with a notable IgG4 deficiency of 1.5 and a low IgM of 36.
Pain went from severe to mild after a week on prednisone. Fevers and shaking that would last hours brought down with Tylenol and ice packs daily. Slowly became fewer a day till they became one every few days till they were gone. -Rashes got as bad to showing up around face on cheeks. Rashes went away on Prednisone. -Discharged with no diagnosis or cause -Prednisone treated & prescribed for fevers & joint pain after discharged.
1) could these abnormal results be indicative of early HIV illenss even though I know the definitive test is the HIV test or can other things be at play? 2) What happens during ARS? Does the white cell count go down and then up ie does white cell count be below normal and the lymphocytes rise. 3) I know handjobs are no risk but what about saliva with blood? Is the risk virtually non-existent? Is there anyone that came to you claiming they got infected this way?
i just wondering if why is her lymphocytes and WBC count are elevated on his admission? I thought at first that its because of her medicine which is prednisone. But this medicine was given when she refer to the medical ward. Can someone tell me the interpretation.. thanks..
During one of her blood tests though, her WBC count was alarmingly low. Her RBC and platelets were also low. After a few months of monitoring this, she was diagnosed with Aplastic anemia - after a bone marrow biopsy. I understand that certain viral hepatitus can cause this but my hemotologist and G.I. Specialist said a link could not be made with the AIH. I think it is too coincidental that two pretty rare idiopathic conditions could happen and not be linked in some way.
or benadry l change up on the weekends. IF i miss a dose some times I have swelling with in 24 hours. I take prednisone only if I have an attach .I also take Zantac for heart burn 2. I have just switched rhuemy Dr and he took me off of prednisone and methotrexate because I have been on them on high does for over 15 years and he was afraid that they were causing harm that had not been discovered as of yet. Is this from the methotrexate. He said last labs I had low WBC and high neutrophils so he is repeating. ???? Thank you for answering.
I have been on plaqunil for 3 years and off and on prednisone, when I have had serious flares. I am 5ft tall and under 120lbs. I try to walk 2 miles a day depending on how I feel and the weather. I have had some concerning symptoms lately. First of all, shortness of breath with climbing stairs or incline walking. I cannot push the vacumn or lawnmower without extreme shortness of breath. I no longer have to shave my legs... the hair has stopped growing.

I am now on Leflunomide instead of methotrexate and prednisone. I am having terrible flatutence and severe gas with anything I eat. Is it ok to take Imodium to lessen the symptons each time I eat? I will be going to my Rheumy next Friday but wanted to see if others have had this issue? Your advise is appreciated.
