I have had a chronic pattern of elevated wbc and neutrophils for 5 months now but only slightly elevated over those 5 months, however symptoms have increased and having extreme lethargy, night sweats and now daytime sweats and weakness. Most recent labs now show higher WBC 21 (range 4.5-11)and neutrophils 78 range (42-75) and low lymphocytes 13 (range 20-51). My doctor has me on 10mg of prednisone but he doesn’t feel the prednisone would increase my labs that much. Please help.

I just checked out of the hospital yesterday, where I was admitted for pneumonia and a high WBC count. When I checked out, I was told my WBC is still too high, and that I'll need to get it checked soon. I'm becoming concerned because even though I left the hospital, I am still incredibly weak and don't have the energy to do anything or go anywhere. I will have to return to work on Monday, and at this point, I don't know if I will have the physical energy.

My father had lymphoma for two years and never had unusual CBCs, except as the result of medications. E.g., prednisone can elevate WBC - but so can tremendous stress. The odd feature in your case, I think, is the steadily increasing number. Docs can see indications from scans on whether cancer is involved. You might instead have some unusual condition involved with your immune system - especially if you have an Fx of that.

WBC getting up to 21? There's a common drug called prednisone that can do that. I mention this to indicate that 21 is not so sky high that only a cancer can do so. Prednisone affects immune cells, btw, and especially increases neutrophils in blood tests. It is similar to a natural hormone called cortisol.

98 I had a burst appendix with all the side effects - end result is 6 1/2 feet of the small intestine and 6 inches of the large were removed with the ic valve (so you know how careful I am about my diet) Even though I inject 1/2 cc B12 every other week, since nine days ago I am quite fatigued and have lost a pound a day. She was given steroid and antibiotic injections. Also given Baytril and Prednisone to take home and give daily. She gets Prednisone 20mg 3 times a day. She began heavy breathing on day 2 of the med and also seems to have belly bloating. Is this normal? I called my Vets office and all they said was to bring her in to get seen. NOW, I was told to go to hospital 2 days ago, I have had a very hard time breathing, white blood cell count was 21,000 (10,000 is highest normal) but I was on prednisone, which can increase your wbc count. 4 days after finishing the prednisone I had a repeat blood work and get results today. I've also have a temp of 99.3, night sweats, and since 11/3/08 my pulse has been over a 100 up to 109 and pressure has been normal to low for me.

I just received blood work results. My calcium is 10.6, my wbc is 4.24, and ALT is 49. Should I be concerned?

Have they looked at his appendix? I had the same type of thing. My stomach hurt off and on for about a week or so. The pain was in the top and more all over in the stomach - not at all localized int eh right side. The only reason I went to the docs was to get an excuse for work. I'm glad I did. My WBC were very high and they did an ultrasound and said I had an appendicitis. I went straight to the hospital.

Symptoms returned following week and was Rx Colchicine for 1 wk. due to NSAID allergy. Echo after tx with Prednisone was normal without any signs of effusion. EKG's, CXR and CT of chest WNL. While at the hospital they done a ABG and also tested my wbc which was 18000. I was given prednisone and azythromiacin and an inhaler. A week later i had a follow up with my gp and still was not better and still had a fever. She done a cbc again and this time my wbc was 23000. I have taken 3 injections of rocephin the last being yesterday and i have a follow up monday for repeat cbc. I still have a low fever 99. and i just generally do not feel good.

I have just switched rhuemy Dr and he took me off of prednisone and methotrexate because I have been on them on high does for over 15 years and he was afraid that they were causing harm that had not been discovered as of yet. 9 AST = 47 ALT = 98 Infectious Doctor prescribed a 10 day tapering course of Prednisone 60 mg decreasing by 10 mg per day for recurrent aphthous stomitits and more importantly HORRIBLE swollen cervical lymph nodes in my neck. your sensations could be from the meds or your nerves. have some blood work done, like sed rate and wbc and see a neurologist. just my opinion and I am not a doc, just a very sick lady, 56 next month!

I was in shock because up until this point he had been perfectly healthy. She prescribed prednisone to help with inflammation and appetite. After starting the prednisone his poop returned to normal and his appetite was up. We thought he was cured until about 2 weeks after stopping pred, all symptoms returned. The monocytes were at 1.1 and eos at -.1. Basophils at 0. The platelt count was 267 and red blood cell count was 5.79. It seems only the white blood cell count was flagged with neuts, lymphs and mono. I am currently on a high dose of prednisone.
