Side effects of steroid use depend on the dose, the duration and the frequency of administration. Short courses of prednisolone, days to a week or two are usually well tolerated with few and mild side effects. Long-term, high doses of prednisolone will usually produce predictable, and potentially serious side effects.
RE is also known as Rasmussen's Syndrome and Rasmussen's Disease. This disorder occurs almost exclusively in children under the age of 10. Alternate treatment includes (apart from the conventional surgery) Trials of various combinations of powerful drugs that suppress the immune system (prednisolone, azathioprine, methotrexate, and cyclophosphamide) and therapies that modulate the function of the immune system (plasma exchange and intravenous immunoglobulin) have been tried.
In the ER, I was told she had contact dermatitis and was given a script for prednisolone 5mg. She received her first dose in the ER hand was fine. Over the next few days the bumps faded, rash healed. Then, on Friday, after a bath, the skin on one of her finger tips from halfway down the nailed to just over the tip completely came off. It looked like a blister had popped, but there were no blisters.
Final Diagnosis: Dermatitis, acute, suppurative, perivascular to diffuse, with superficial suppurative epidermitis and mast cell hyperplasis. Bacteriology: Specimens: skin scrapings - KOH prep Results: No fungal elements observed. Comment: I did not see epithelial lesions that would suggest pemphigus in these biopsies. The lesion appears to be more consistent with a hypersensitivity dermatitis and secondary pyoderma with perhaps, some degree of excoriation related to the pruritis.
Recently we saw a pediatric pulminologist who diagnosed her with RAD and has her an Pulmicort, Zopenex, Prednisolone, Singular, Previcid, Duradryl, and Nasanex, and a daily dose of amoxicilin, she has been on and off Zyrtec for 1.5 yrs. with no real relief. He is working on a preventative maintenance plan as well. She has had a full immunology work up and every thing looked ok. She was borderline on her IGG type 56 and type 4(?) but none of her dr.'s seem concerned about that.
I also take Aldactone to control the swelling on my legs although when I was on the high doses of Prednisolone the swelling was everywhere on my body especially my face (moon face lol) I also take a calcium supplement because as you all probably know Prednisolone can cause osteoporosis. Recently though (since august 2003) I suffered mental confusion known as hepatic encephalopathy. This was treated with Lactulose. I have had reoccurrences of this condition 3 times.
At first it was mild and then progressively got worse throughout the year. The Dr put me on oral prednisolone which normally starts to work within a week but 2 months later I was still on a high dose and it was still bad. They did a flexi sigmoidoscopy and saw that it was severe colitis so they put me on Azathioprine as well as keeping me on steroids and for some reason straight away I went into remission. They were going to give me infliximab injections but I didn't end up needing it.
If you are No longer giving the Temaril P, then you CAN UP your dose of Benedryl.....But if you ARE giving the TP, then you shouldn't up the dose of Benedryl...Here's why: The Temaril P IS an Antihistamine plus steroid......You may be close to overdosing on the antihistamine (With the benedryl) which WILL cause dehydration...... If you are only using the Benedryl, then you can up your dose......
I got to 5 mg and that's when I had the last flare and they increased me to 40mg to get it under control. I have been on 20 mg for nearly 8 months now and the doctors are not touching my dose since it seems to keep my levels normal at this rate. Since we're trying to get pregnant they suggested I see a high risk OB/GYN. We did that but when I asked the questions about my meds and switching to Imuran, the doctor just read off her computer the info.
His pulmonologist thinks his acid reflux triggers alot of it, so we hope he outgrows it too. Till then he's on a high dose steroid inhaler till we get past the cold/flu season, he takes 3 meds for reflux, we neb and he's on Singulair. I feel so bad for him, but can't wait till we get out of this season, summer should get better. Hang in there, you aren't alone. Hope your little one feels better.
His main trouble being his protein is +++ in his urine, cholesterol is 15.5 and his sats are 85% BP relatively normal. He is on Clexane injection, Prednisolone steroids, Ramipril, Simvastatin, Lanzoprazole to name what I remember. He is unresponsive to steroids and on examination his lungs were found to be filled with fluid which chest x-ray confirmed. On discussion with doctor he was asked numerous questions 1. He had had a heaviness around his stomach a week previous 2.
She prescribed Q-var and albuterol pumps (with a mouth peice and tube). She said to give doses in the am and pm. I began this routine and found not long after that my son was affected by this medication and made him very jittery and changed his personality (he began biting, getting aggrevated and hitting - which he did not do prior). So after a few weeks I reduced it to the evenings and after month and a half I took him off.
Hampton Roy Sr, MD === Treatment of Lyme Disease === Difficulties can arise in choosing the appropriate antibiotic treatment regimen, especially in children or potentially pregnant women. Again, an infectious disease consult is helpful in these situations. Finally, if one decides to become actively involved in the management of these patients, stay abreast of the literature, especially in the rapidly changing areas of diagnosis and treatment.
I went 6 extra days and spaced out my dose from every four to every 6 hours. It was easy and I found I had no trouble doing it. The pain turned up quite a bit and made it harder to get on top of when I did take the next dose. I just had an appointment with my pain specialist and we discussed more injections. I expressed my concern about addiction and we talked briefly about my dose-schedule. I explained my adding 6 days. He had a huge smile and said, "You are going to be just fine.

I do have a plain low fat yoghurt that has these probiotics in. Increasing Prednisolone up to the dose I was on has helped with what I have been told is Polymyalgia. I already know calcium to be a problem, and if prescribed again, some pretence at taking this will be needed. With regard to raising the foot of my bed, and the problems with my lungs as a child, and nothing to show of anything amiss in the lungs today I have to wonder why a GP would advise that the foot of my bed be raised.
Many flares and bouts of severe rectal bleeding requiring inpatient care on IV prednisolone and nutrition. Dx breast cancer Jan 2003, 2 cm tumour stage and grade 2, 3/18 lymph nodes affected. I am steroid dependent and got steroid induced psychosis when dx with bc. Violent allergic reaction to azathioprine and intolerant to all sulphur drugs.
I don't recall having many symptoms for my first two children. I am four days post transfer. Struggling with the wait this time! Ugh!
I was put on 60 mg per day of prednisolone, and was on it at varying doses until 6 yrs ago (when I 56 yrs old) that I saw methotrexate , a cytotoxic drug used for cancer) was being used in the US (I live in England) and begged my then gastro to prescribe it off licence. It is still off licence in England for Crohn's, although it is prescribed under licence for severe psoriasis and theumatoid arthritis - both of which I also have. It has been a miracle drug for me.
welcome here maari sorry to hear about your problems I can only partially help you because after having taken pred and imuran, I stopped them both now. here is my experience. I was diagnosed an autoimmune cholangitis last spring and have been treated with prednisone 50mg/day and imuran (= azioprine, 100 mg/day) combined. I was feeling real bad, vertigo, emotionally upset, weakness, cramps, tinnitus... the list might continue.
Malformation rate in the offsprings of transplanted women appears to not be increased; long-term follow- up of children born to allograft recipients is necessary to investigate possible developmental, immunological, or oncological disorders. We followed 70 pregnancies after kidney transplantation and nine after liver transplantation. All recipients were maintained on immunosuppressive therapy during pregnancy, except one mother who refused immunosuppression and experienced transplant rejection.
He seems a pulmonologist for his breathing too, and is on Flovent 220, 2 puffs twice daily which is the max dose and an adult dose. He still has been struggling. He also takes Singulair, my older son did too. Carson did well in Singulair and unless he got sick or ran too much, he stopped wheezing. Have they tried any other meds? I know the Singulair can be also for allergies, they added it to Cam's list to be be safe. He will be 15 months old next week and no sign of outgrowing it.

After meeting our doctor at the office on a sat, he seemed to think it was a reaction. We have one dose of benydryl in, but it has actually worsened and spread since this afternnon. It looks horrific! Are there any serious concerns I should have now or does it just look awful until it clears up?

I see that cath097 reports that sulfasalazine caused increased joint pain--I think I have experienced increased joint pain only when I resumed taking sulfasalazine after missing several days of doses. (Possibly, cath097 should have taken prednisolone for a month prior to beginning sulfasalazine as prescribed by my rheumatologist.) I will say that adjusting to sulfasalazine took a couple of months.
Does anyone know if you get that moon face with that low of a dose? If so, how long does it take for it to happen. I've only had one dose and I'm not taking anymore until I get an honest and truthful answer. Quite frankly I'd rather have the pain than a moon face and weight gain. Please, someone let me know. I'm probably being a baby about it, but I'd really like to know.
