So I don't think that my prescribing practices should be regarded as correct versus others. I usually use wither atorvastatin or pravastatin, some of the decision is determined by what insurance someone has and whether the patient will incur a large out of pocket expense. The only generic statin that I'm aware of is lovastatin. I think most generic drugs are equivalent to the brand name counterparts.
Lipitor (atorvastatin), Lescol (fluvastatin), Mevacor (lovastatin), Altoprev (lovastatin extended-release), Livalo (pitavastatin), Pravachol (pravastatin), Crestor (rosuvastatin), and Zocor (simvastatin). Combination products include: Advicor (lovastatin/niacin extended-release), Simcor (simvastatin/niacin extended-release), and Vytorin (simvastatin/ezetimibe).
The reason red yeast rice works so well is because it contains a small amount of a natural statin called lovastatin. Lovastatin is the same compound found in the prescription drug, Mevacor. But unlike Mevacor, red yeast rice also contains other compounds like plant sterols that might have a positive impact on blocking cholesterol absorption.
The lipid modification effects appeared to be similar to pravastatin, simvastatin, lovastatin, atorvastatin, or fluvastatin. Compared with non-statin lipid lowering agents, RYR preparations appeared superior to nicotinate and fish oils, but equal to or less effective than fenofibrate and gemfibrozil. No significant difference in lipid profile was found between Xuezhikang and Zhibituo.

http://tinyurl.com/6759rg The ribavirin bioavailability of ribavirin can differ between two persons, even if they have the same height and bodyweight. Hence it just seems to be consequent to individualise the therapy more and more and to adapt the ribavirin DOSIS dependent on the individual CONCENTRATION. I predict a routine testing of riba-concentrations and individualised variation of dosis in a few years.
