Pravastatin versus lipitor

Common Questions and Answers about Pravastatin versus lipitor

pravachol

Avatar n tn Both pretrty much the same thing. These are generics for Lipitor and Pravachol, both very affectve. Below are the results of a study that was recently done; "With so many statins available for clinical use in coronary artery syndromes, there has been much discussion about which is the best. Two recent trials have compared the clinical outcomes of intensive lipid lowering with atorvastatin 80 mg/day and standard lowering with pravastatin 40 mg/day.
Avatar f tn There was a study done with 550 people in 1993, that looked at the differences in treatment with simvastatin versus pravastatin. Patients were put on a cholesterol-lowering diet and given one of the medications. After 18 weeks, patients given simvastatin had significantly lower total cholesterol, lower LDL, lower triglycerides, and higher HDL cholesterol levels than those who took pravastatin.
Avatar n tn Have you discussed this with your doctor? I was changed to Pravastatin recently. You can google the warnings and side effects of that one. I also take Tricor for my hyperlipidemia. But that is a fenofibrate, not a statin. Have you ever tried the grandfather of statins, Lipitor? Talk to your doctor and get the straight answers.
Avatar f tn Dr had changed from Lipitor (generic) to Pravastatin 40 mg, but still horrible muscle pain. Dr wants to put on another statin( saying this has less side effects) and extremly expensive...But I would like to try a Non Statin is there is one on the market, or would there be supplements that are available and have good results? Mainly I would like names of non statins to research and discuss.
179856 tn?1333547362 and now that is gone. I have to go on a low fat diet and increase exercise! AS you know, Lipitor is not indicated for people with liver disease...so I'm going to have to do it I guess. Low fat? After doing treatment and becoming so used to ice cream and things like that it's going to be torture! I was wondering if anybody else had their cholesterol go up after treatment?
Avatar n tn I was on 40mg of Pravastatin and now am on 80mg. Is my doc just being aggressive? Or is there another reason for the big increase?
Avatar f tn Thank you. I'm on my third statin, Pravastatin, because I couldn't tolerate Lipitor or Crestor (severe muscle aches). I was allowed to stop statins entirely for a month, but had to go back on them as my cholesterol shot up, even though I'm careful with my diet and am exercising. I have a family history on both sides of very high cholesterol, and my doctor said you can't do anything about genetics. I will pick up some CoQ10 immediately.
Avatar m tn Back in March, I was diagnosed with really high cholesterol (268, with LDL being 192) and I was put on Lipitor. I couldn't take it very long because it made me feel sick so the doctor switched me to Pravastatin. I soon switched doctors because he was making me uncomfortable with the things he was saying and my new doctor did a liver enzyme test. It came back elevated so she took me off of the Pravastatin to see if my enzymes would improve.
Avatar f tn My overall cholesteral is 186 - so pretty good. I have been on a statin (Lipitor) and have noticed that my diabetes markers are higher (still pre-diabetes) and I've been having some memory issues, so I'm not too happy about that! But, I haven't been feeling any other ill effects so I'm glad about that. I hope that you're doing well.
Avatar m tn Lisinopril and Carvedilol are blood pressure medications (lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor, Carvedilol is a beta blocker) and should not have any effect on your lipid profile. Both are important medications for those who have suffered a heart attack and undergone stenting. In addition to these medications, you should be on some sort of lipid medication (a "statin" such as atorvastatin, pravastatin, rosuvasatin, lovastatin, etc).
Avatar n tn Lipitor (atorvastatin), Lescol (fluvastatin), Mevacor (lovastatin), Altoprev (lovastatin extended-release), Livalo (pitavastatin), Pravachol (pravastatin), Crestor (rosuvastatin), and Zocor (simvastatin). Combination products include: Advicor (lovastatin/niacin extended-release), Simcor (simvastatin/niacin extended-release), and Vytorin (simvastatin/ezetimibe). The new labels will warn patients about: Memory loss and mental confusion.
Avatar n tn I took niacin for 20 yrs. I am now 67 and have tried two different popular statins( lipitor and crestor which did lower LDL about 50 pts but also lowered HDL). I could not tolerate either statin because of personality changes ie: anger and irritability all the time and severe cognitive issues with memory, reasoning and being able to focus. After stopping each statin, it has taken me longer to get back to normal mentally.
Avatar m tn My meds are Coreg 6.25 and lipitor 20 one day 40 the next..In the past two weeks I have worked to exhaustion up a 5m ladder cutting old ivy and bouganvillea. I have never felt better in years. I walk/run 5km. Pulse 104 and no symptoms that could in any way be related to CAD. hope you are thriving.

Avatar f tn Has anyone read how horrific the side effects really are to some of these statins and realized that either they or their loved ones had these very symtoms and becames seriously ill to the point that they ended up in ICU not knowing who they were, where they were, in so much pain they could not bear to be touched and had regressed to near infancy before anyone figured out that it was zocor or lipitor or another statin they were on that was causing these bizarre illnessess ?

Avatar f tn I am a 39 year old, female. I was put on Pravastatin about 9 weeks ago as my cholesterol had gone from 190 to 225 from the previous year. I have a family history of heart disease (my father passed away after a second heart attack at 53). I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 2 years ago and was placed on Levoxyl (75mg) and my levels have remained normal. I went to have my cholesterol checked after taking the pravastatin for 9 weeks.
Avatar m tn m still trying to get a clarification. Anyway, the cardiologist put me on Amlodopine and Pravastatin. Now, on a daily basis it seems, my heart rate increases and beats at 90-115 bpm (normally in the mid 70s). At the same time, I've started on a vegetarian diet to try to lower my cholesterol. To try to make sure I get enough protein, I am using a protein drink (10-14 gr protein each). I drink 1-2 of these per day.

Avatar n tn I recently was prescripbed pravastatin and I notice a higher number when I test after a night of fasting in my Blood Glucose. Is there a posibility that could cause the rise.
Avatar m tn Is it safe to take Levothyroxine at the same time as Pravastatin? Also, 2 months ago, I started to take my Levothyroxine at bedtime instead of in the morning as it is more convenient. and after a recent bloodtest my GP has reduced my Thyroxine to 75mcg instead of 100mcg. Could taking it at bedtime be the reason for this reduction? I will obviously ask my GP about this on my next visit to the surgery but would be grateful for any advice.
1806721 tn?1554333407 My doctor has put me on generic pravastatin 20mg. A few days after I started the drug, I had a fever with flu-like symptom, and when that went away in a few days, I have been having hip/knee pains and fatigue that gets worse over the course of 2 weeks. My question is: Could these symptoms be related with pravastatin? Will these symptoms go away after a while?
Avatar f tn Recently I went to the GP for a regular checkup, and my bloodwork showed an elevated level of total creatine kinase. I measured 234 versus an upper boundary of 204. She told me to go off of the statin for 4 weeks and we would retest. I am a worrier. I am wondering why, after taking this drug for years, am I just now starting to feel a side effect? I am worried that something worse may be going on, such as a muscle disease or ALS or something along those lines.
Avatar f tn I went to the doctor and told him that my Dad had the same reaction to Lipitor. So, he put me on Pravastatin instead. The pain reduced but never went away. I tried anti-inflammatory medications with no relief. I eventually saw another physician who set me up for X-Raysand blood work.
