Research about the interaction of grapefruit juice with drugs suggests that compounds in grapefruit juice, called furanocoumarins (for example, bergamottin), may be responsible for the effects of grapefruit juice. Researchers believe that furanocoumarins block the enzymes in the intestines that normally break down many drugs. One glass of grapefruit juice could elicit the maximum blocking effect, and the effect may persist for longer than 24 hours.
Thanks, Rocker, for posting all that. I was curious about the grapefruit-drug interaction, but had not done the research. I was told to avoid grapefruit during tx. Is that a standard of tx, to avoid grapefruit, I mean, is everyone told that by their caregivers? Just curious.

Yes. Grapefruit and certain other citrus fruits and products can interfere with several kinds of prescription medications.
Don't take these interactions lightly. Some can cause potentially dangerous health problems.
Has anyone had problems with Zoloft side effects as a result of eating grapefruits? I started taking zoloft (100 mg daily) just two months ago and have not gotten over what I thought were the initial symptoms--dizziness, drowsiness, itchy skin. I was so tired all day long that I found I had to drink up to 7 cups of coffee a day to stay awake. While reading an old magazine, one title jumped out at me, "Grapefruit Concern".
I am also on pravastatin 20 mg. I find diltiazem/xarelto interaction in only one place. Abt 10 days ago, started having diarrhea or several loose bm's per day. If this continues should I call the cardio doc re this problem or go see gastro doc?. I have had pancreatitis in past so have a gastro doc.
I can't find an interaction between pravastatin and levo, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.
Levo should be taken on an empty stomach, then nothing to eat or drink except water for 30-60 minutes. There are people who take it at night; however, you do need to make sure there's adequate time for your stomach to empty, between your last meal and taking the med.
All other medications should be separated from the levo for a couple hours, if possible.
This, initially the drug does not completely metabolize and has an extended half-life. This why it is dangerous to take grapefruit juice with certain medications. Follow me on this. You take a substance that reduces the production of these enzymes (say grapefruit juice) and for the first four hours the drug does not fully metabolize. After six hours the grapefruit juice wears off, the liver again starts producing these enzymes, and you take a second dose of the medication.

There is an interaction between grapefruit and almost every medication known to man. When it come a to mental health medications grapefruit is a very serious danger. I am glad you are ok and have patience because things will go back to as they were. Grapefruit and st. Johns wort are to things to completelt avoid while taking zoloft and/ or other mood balancing/ altering medicines.

Naringenin interferes with drugs, so you should not take it while on treatment. If you google Naringenin drug interaction or grapefruit drug interaction, you will find a lot of info on the subject.
Dr had changed from Lipitor (generic) to Pravastatin 40 mg, but still horrible muscle pain. Dr wants to put on another statin( saying this has less side effects) and extremly expensive...But I would like to try a Non Statin is there is one on the market, or would there be supplements that are available and have good results?

Can someone explain what, if any, evidence there for a switch from simvastatin to pravastatin? My husband's doctor said there is new evidence that simvastatin may be detrimental. Unfortunately, my husband did not quiz him further. He already has one stent in a narrow back artery but he has brought his cholesterol down considerably with the statins.
One thought, did you take anything that may have had a poor interaction with your simvistatin? Grapefruit for example is something that needs to be avoided while taking statins. Grapefruit contains the compound bergamottin, which interacts with certain enzyme systems in the body, such as cytochrome P-450 and P-glycoprotein. These enzyme systems are responsible for breaking down statins, as well as other drugs, into more usable chemicals and transporting them in the body.
