pravachol

Avatar f tn t affect your HDL at all. I take Ezetimibe daily, just 10mg, and this reduces LDL and keeps HDL high in me. Maybe you could try this.
Avatar f tn t seem overly concerned. He said I could go off the pravastatin and see how my numbers were with diet and exercise alone. I have been on a good routine with proper diet and regular exercise and I am at the low end of my healthy weight. I have low to normal blood pressure. Anyway, searching for info on this today, I can't find anyone with such low LDL levels but the term "dangerously low" pops up for women with HDL less than 40.
1806721 tn?1554333407 4 months ago, I found out that my total cholesterol was 327 (HDL 64 LDL 210). I tried lifestyle change with 45 mins exercise everyday and a vegan/vegetarian diet. 1 month ago, my total cholesterol came down to 267 (HDL 50 LDL 191). My doctor has put me on generic pravastatin 20mg. A few days after I started the drug, I had a fever with flu-like symptom, and when that went away in a few days, I have been having hip/knee pains and fatigue that gets worse over the course of 2 weeks.
Avatar m tn If I do not like being on medication the stent is an option. Has anyone had positive results with exercise, change in diet and focusing on increasing HDL to control/reduce blockage?
Avatar n tn I was on 40mg of Pravastatin and now am on 80mg. Is my doc just being aggressive? Or is there another reason for the big increase? I welcome any speculations.
225237 tn?1333138999 In 4 month-long placebo-controlled trials, 1.7% of Pravastatin-treated patients and 1.2% of placebo-treated patients were discontinued from treatment because of adverse experiences attributed to study drug therapy; this difference was not statistically significant. 6.1 Adverse Clinical Events Short-Term Controlled Trials In the Pravastatin sodium placebo-controlled clinical trials database of 1313 patients (age range 20 to 76 years, 32.4% women, 93.5% Caucasians, 5% Blacks, 0.
Avatar f tn After 18 weeks, patients given simvastatin had significantly lower total cholesterol, lower LDL, lower triglycerides, and higher HDL cholesterol levels than those who took pravastatin. The study found that the patients on simvastatin achieved the target LDL level of less than 130, more than those on pravastatin (65 percent on simvastatin versus 35 percent on pravastatin). The most common side effects of the statins in general are nausea, gas, and upset stomach.
Avatar m tn There is a theory that HDL quality is as important if not more important than the amount. There is good HDL and bad HDL. The good HDL helps remove damaged LDL. If there is too much of the bad HDL then it no longer protects you and actually helps cause heart disease. To analyze requires getting an "expanded lipid profile" to learn the particle size and number of your HDL cholesterol molecules.
Avatar n tn I now take my meds which are Tricor and Pravastatin. But in addition to those I take 500mg of Niacin in the morning and again in the evening. He needs to get that number down because I have had multiple heart attacks from the plaque in my blood. And that comes from the high levels of triglycerides in the blood. That is the fat that causes the plaque to form. The Niacin is a good supplement in treating this.

Avatar n tn I'd certainly take note of the high numbers. In my case, I'm challenged to keep my LDL numbers below 75, and my HDL levels above 50, and no less than a 3:1 ratio. I'm a veteran of the cholesterol battle. You sound in good shape, congratulations for walking like you do. I resisted taking statins when I had numbers like you have, it was a wrong decision. In my case, familial cholesterol issues were an issue, so I take Vytorin, which controls both dietary and familial cholesterol.
976897 tn?1379167602 I finally made a dent in my TGLs on my annual test last week. they had been running a few points plus or minus 300, once as high as 399. Last week, 195 with a TC of 158, LDL 79 and HDL 40 and a ratio of 4.2. I'll take it, it's not Ed good, but still good enough for me. Also, nice work Ed!
Avatar n tn s the quality of the particles and not the count that matters. Many people with HDL counts as high as yours have HDL-3 particles that are very small and not as effective when binding to LDL. If it were me I would give pravastatin a chance, but if I had the same side effects and I could not live with them, I would try something like Zetia. You could also add a fenofibrate like Tricor to lower your TGLs as well, very safe and no side effects.
Avatar m tn I am an overweight 42 year old with LDL under 100, tri under 130 and HDL at 40. I have lost 35 pounds excercising with about 60 more to go. I started running about a month ago and currently going to gym 5-6 days a week with 6 days cardion and three days weight training. On the treadmill I normally do 10 min warmup and then 30 sec running and 30 sec walking for 20 minutes then a 5 minute cool down.

Avatar f tn The Veterans Affairs HDL Intervention Trial (VA-HIT). 6 This was a placebo-controlled, randomized trial conducted in 20 Veterans Affairs medical centers. A total of 2531 men with coronary heart disease, mean HDL cholesterol 31.5 mg/dl and mean LDL cholesterol 111 mg/dl, were randomized to gemfibrozil 1200 mg/d or placebo and were followed up for 5 years.
Avatar n tn It seems that the main problem was with fenofibrate and pravastatin. The level was pravastatin was greatly increased. But newer info with other statins shows no danger. Atorvastatin serum levels were actually decreased. Jack is very correct that any individual's response can vary a lot from the norm. > Any other natural suggestions on lowering [TG]? I've seen studies that low carb works best, but low Glycemic Index is not that far behind.
720228 tn?1530911279 m wondering if you can ask your Dr about diet changes and exercise before starting the meds. Normal is below 200. Do you know what your other numbers were? LDL,HDL and triglycerides? Those are very important too.Sometimes making these changes can get your numbers down. They may have to be drastic though. Mainly fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, beans, things like that. No fast food at all. No junk food of any kind.
Avatar n tn Two recent trials have compared the clinical outcomes of intensive lipid lowering with atorvastatin 80 mg/day and standard lowering with pravastatin 40 mg/day. In the Pravastatin or Atorvastatin Evaluation and Infection Therapy (PROVE IT) trial, patients with acute coronary artery syndromes were enrolled, and pravastatin lowered the low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol to 2.46 mmol/l, whereas atorvastatin lowered it to 1.60 mmol/l.
Avatar n tn I recently was prescripbed pravastatin and I notice a higher number when I test after a night of fasting in my Blood Glucose. Is there a posibility that could cause the rise.
Avatar n tn I have high colesterol, but take pravastatin 80mg, Niacin 500mg, and aspirin 320mg daily, with this, my total chol is 129, LDL 80, HDL 33, TRIG 79. I have a hard time keeping the HDL up, can't take more niacin, I flush easily. I had really severy astma as a child, requiring cotisone shots very often, I finally outgrew it in my late 30's.
Avatar m tn BP is 120/68, resting pulse =55, total cholesterol 181 (40 mg of pravastatin nightly); HDL 55 (ratio is 3.3), Triglycerides - 79mg/dl, and ldl 110 mg/dl I ride my bike 3x/week about 75-100 miles/week. No family history with parents, but grandfather died in 1964 of heart attack at age 65 (most likely no medications on board for him). Had a stress test about 3 years ago that was uneventful. This weekend I went on a 110 mile ride - 2 days. First day 55 miles and slept in tent.
Avatar f tn This is supported by large, randomized clinical trials, including the Heart Protection Study (HPS) and the Prospective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER). The HPS was a large statin trial and included 20,536 participants who were followed over a 5-year period. Also, the Jupiter Study, which involved approximately 18,000 patients on Crestor 20mg, had absolutely no data to suggest that a statin has any effect on the neurologic system, including loss of memory.
Avatar m tn 59 yo white male. 1 year post MI with two stents in my RCA. I am active and with high a normal BMI of 25 No problem walking a fast mile or with light exercise. My LVEF was 50% right after MI and 45% 2 months later. due for another echo in 2 months. my lipids are under control - LDL < 70 and TC < 140, with or without the 10 mg pravastatin I am prescribed as I eat mostly a quality plant based diet, low in fats and simple carbs.. My question has to do with drugs.
Avatar m tn m still trying to get a clarification. Anyway, the cardiologist put me on Amlodopine and Pravastatin. Now, on a daily basis it seems, my heart rate increases and beats at 90-115 bpm (normally in the mid 70s). At the same time, I've started on a vegetarian diet to try to lower my cholesterol. To try to make sure I get enough protein, I am using a protein drink (10-14 gr protein each). I drink 1-2 of these per day.
Avatar f tn It has dropped my LDL to 39-45 range and blood glucose ranges from 105-111 fasting. A1c 5.1 - 5.3. Prior to the statin I was below 100. I am not overweight, exercise consistently and eat very healthy. So the statin is the culprit. I am wondering if being stricter on carb intake and supplementing with Berberine will help? Or has anyone had better outcomes with other statins like livalo or pravastatin?
Avatar m tn FOR ME, it did nothing as it did almost nothing for the cholesterol levels, and in fact some test for liver function was bad and I was taken off the medication and switched to another. Hopefully that does not happen with you. Besides the other statin they switched me to the co-pay was several times the expense of the pravatstatin.
