Pravachol and side effects

Common Questions and Answers about Pravachol and side effects

pravachol

Avatar n tn I was on medication in and out as I develop side effects to the statin drugs. I was on Lipitor, then on Pravachol and lastly on Crestor. None of them had problems loweting the Choesterol levels, but muscle and joint pain even with Vit D and Co Q10 as prescribed my physician. However, I came off crestor yesterday as I started feeling Dizzy. I am normally a "healthy", active energetic person. Now my doc thinks we should try Zetia which is in a different family of drugs.
Avatar n tn however, I have high blood pressure (norvasc), osteopena (sp) and high cholesteral (pravachol). I really don't want to take fossamax or any more drugs than necessary, but also do not want a recurrence of breast cancer. Is there a clinical study and shows femara vs placebo rather than femara vs tamoifen (novartis trial)? What is the general recommendation? Can you stop femara if side effects become a quality of life issue? Thank you.
Avatar n tn Pravachol (pravastin sodium) does not ALWAYS cause diabetes. The drug, however has a number of possible serious side affects. A discussion of these may be found on the United States government website for the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Go to their site and type in "pravachol" on their internal document search engine.
Avatar n tn Studies have found no links to incremental side effects with long term use. Your dosage is quite small, most all side effects occur with doses of 80 mg per day. Just make sure to get your blood tested annually to make sure there are no changes in your liver enzymes.
Avatar n tn t find the right medicine...Lipitor caused severe muscle weakness, Zetia caused all kind of digestive problems and Pravachol zapped my energy...my count actually went up 30 points while taking WelChol! My doctor is telling me that I have no other choices of medicine to lower my count (total 285, HDL 106 VLDL 21, LDL 188, Triglycerids 106.) My sister is having the same problem so I guess this problem is a family thing. I am really troubled by my doctor's lack of concern.
Avatar n tn I have been on them for many years as I was unable to lower my LDL with diet and exercise alone. They have worked well and I have had no side effects, but everyone is different. Most of these can be replaced by the generic Simvastatin. It's cheap and is the basis of many of the meds out there. For instance, it's the generic for Zocor plus Vytorin is Simvastatin with Zetia, a Fenofibrate for lowering tri's.
Avatar m tn I think memory problems, pulmonary fibrosis, etc are rarely reported because doctors impute them to "idiopathic" origins or getting old. Often they just cannot believe that statins could ever cause any problems other than those they know about. In fact, I read somewhere that something like 90% of the side effects of all drugs are not reported because doctors don't expect them to be side effects.
Avatar n tn Some people taking statin drugs have experienced these brain-related effects. These effects usually have not been serious and went away when patients stopped using the drugs. Risk of high blood sugar. Risk of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
1806721 tn?1554333407 Also not mentioned, the FDA is eliminating the risk of liver damage from the list of side effects and that the link to Memory loss, confusion, high blood sugar, and type 2 diabetes are not proven, only an observation and NO LINK HAS BEEN PROVEN. This is typical anti statin rhetoric with only part of the data being given and the rest either ignored or taken out of context.
Avatar f tn Dr wants to put on another statin( saying this has less side effects) and extremly expensive...But I would like to try a Non Statin is there is one on the market, or would there be supplements that are available and have good results? Mainly I would like names of non statins to research and discuss.
Avatar n tn My understanding is that the statins with the greatest LDL reducing effect are Crestor, Lipitor, Zocor, and Pravachol, in that order. I don’t mention Leschol and Mevacor since they appear to be rarely used since recently due to the aforementioned being more powerful. Do we have any available solid data on the effects of the various individual statins other than LDL reduction? For example, do we know which ones raise HDL the most? What about effects on particle size or Lp(a), etc.
Avatar n tn Hi...I am on numerous meds...heart(tachycardia arrythmia)-ATENOLOL; High Cholesterol-CRESTOR; Hernia-PRAVACHOL; Fibromyalgia & Osteo-Arthrytis-KETOROLAC; water retention-LASIX; Sinus-FLONASE; Dysrythmia-ATIVAN. I have also been on EFFEXOR for 5 years for severe depression. My dosage has been increased twice in the past month--I now take 187.5 mg...I woke up at about 12 midnight last Sunday and I have no recall of the past 4 days; however, I apparently withdrew $7000.
Avatar n tn It is a different kind of anxiety than I have had in the past and feels neurological, and I really think it has something to do with long term side effects of amiodarone, which stays in the body up to six months after you stop using it and has additional side effects when taken along with statins and/or coumadin, both of which I was taking. So I do not think you are far off in your thoughts about amiodarone.
Avatar m tn Also, did you take the statin at night and to reduce the side effects of it, take a smaller daily dose of CQ10 with it at night? There are some pharmaceutical companies that have programs for cost reduced drugs that a doctor orders if you are eligible for it; I recall it is income based and is in the US. Hope this helps. Joan.
Avatar n tn never came back), resurgence of the peripheral neuropathy which I first got years ago from a year on Pravachol (statin) all the way up to my knees, worsening of my lung disease (which I discovered started with the Pravachol, stopped when I was off statins, and grew again when I went back on) AND wildly erratic heartbeats and tachycardia (all the way up to 140 beats per minute).
1583640 tn?1296674030 m saying that in the case of statins, the effects have been proven to NOT be accumulative. Side effects almost always present in the first 90 days. I'm sure there are some situations where that is not the case.
Avatar f tn Fat-soluble statins like Lipitor and Zocor cause more damage than water soluble statins like Pravachol and Crestor. Hence the latter should be tried at lower dose. Possibility of hypothyroidism and diabetes should be ruled out as the presence of either disease can complicate the muscle pain. The role of Co Q10 in lowering cholesterol is controversial and should not be tried without consulting your doctor. Please discuss these points with your treating physician.
Avatar m tn No other symptoms what so ever. Find it hard to loose weight even I try, take toprol and pravachol, was on Z-pack for strep throat when CT was done. Someone?
Avatar n tn As far as the caffeine and Nutrasweet issue goes, you might want to try a natural sweetener called Stevia. You can get it in health food stores and it is all natural and not made from any chemicals. The only problem I have had with it is that it dissolves better in hot or warm drinks than in cold drinks. If caffeine raises your blood sugar, you might want to try some of the flavored herbal teas.
Avatar m tn 28, 2012 -- Memory loss, confusion, high blood sugar, and type 2 diabetes are possible side effects of the popular cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins, the FDA warns. Brand name and generic versions of statin drugs must carry these warnings on their labels, the FDA today announced.
1414174 tn?1304680526 I started noticeing side effects at about 8pm, and they continued till this morning. I experienced a low grade headache, aches in my upper legs and lower back, some difficulty sleeping, and an awkward kind of dizziness (which I notice now seems to immediately follow my Riba dose). I am a Genotype 1b, with what I was told a 6log Viral load?? I have clean and sober for over 6 years, and am pretty sure I contracted the virus about 7-8 years ago..
7829857 tn?1401192659 I am grateful to have been cleared at the 4 week mark. I was just feeling that the side effects were getting worse and worse and i was battling discouragement. I am very grateful for your help and admire the way you are handling this!
Avatar f tn I am 55 yrs old female and went for a physical and was told i had high blood presure, that day it was 144/92. I had a blood test and it showed high cholesteral 257. Doctor put me on 10 MG Lisinopril. I took the tab for 5 days on the fifth day my heart was pounding so hard in my chest and i felt like someone was sitting on my chest. This happened a few more time over the next week and it would go away after a few min.
Avatar m tn 22 days on sovaldi-olysio-no side effects, not even a headache. And to this life long non responder who has done and failed with everything that has been on the market, this combo is working.Cant believe I am getting better and not suffering like I did with all the previous poison. Its like Dr. Bones McCoy from Star Trek brought this stuff back from the future.
Avatar n tn I woke this morning with aches and pains and have been experiencing a headache on and off all day that is when I am not SLEEPING. Honestly I am not complaining especially since I had expected much worse. My question is do the symptoms change or/and get worse as treatment continues. I would assume they do get worse since the meds build up in your body. I have 3 kids ages 16,11,and 7.
Avatar f tn This treatment has a high risk of psychiatric side effects, you need to find a doctor who is up to date on the treatment and side effects. Search the archives on this forum, its got lots of good discussions and information. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Did you taper off the vibryd or quit abruptly? You can't just switch from one medication to another even in the same class and avoid withdrawal -- these meds are not easy to stop taking and it must be done carefully. Unless you completely stop taking a medication before starting another it's impossible to tell if your symptoms are a sign you're suffering withdrawal and quit too quickly or are side effects of the new medication.
