If you start having muscle cramps though, it could be a sign that your potassium is too high. If that happens, go to the doctor and they will do bloodwork to test your levels. Hope that helps!
Avatar m tn It also seems to make clear that the type of potassium salt you are taking (chloride, citrate, gluconate, acetate, bicarbonate, etc) does not matter. The only thing that counts is the amount of actual (elemental) potassium you are ingesting. For instance we take 595mg tablets of potassium gluconate containing 99mg of elemental potassium. This means that if I am willing to take 20 of these cheap little pills a day to get my 2000mg (2g) of potassium that is just fine.
Avatar m tn m wondering if you can or can not use something like Lo Salt that has potassium chloride in it along with beta blockers, and if so how much is recommended. I'm looking to substitute lo salt for some other high in potassium foods in order to cut down on my sugar content.
Avatar n tn Ok... let me explain the effects of low cortisol, normally. What is is simply is that your body cannot manage sodium. In most people, when sodium goes down, potassium rises - you get confusion, nausea, headaches, vomiting, low blood pressure, chills, sweats, fevers, and it all can lead to coma and death. Look up adrenal crisis for other symptoms. Now, in some people with adrenal issues, potassium does not rise.

Avatar f tn You might want to try some supplements like Potassium and Magnesium. Many people suffer from cramps and spasms from a lack of these minerals. They are available at drug stores. You might want to talk to a doctor before using Potassium as it can cause problems if you take the wrong amount. - It is a salt substitute.
Avatar n tn Liberal use of salt substitutes that contain potassium chloride can add to the potassium load. Liberal use of these products in people with kidney disease can cause dangerously high levels of potassium to build in the bloodstream.

There are different forms of potassium... Typically, the potassium purchased OTC is potassium iodide; the prescription potassium is potassium chloride.
Avatar f tn major electrolytes in the body are sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium (all various forms of salt)...... they must all be in balance and each have their own symptoms of deficiency, which can also overlap.
617141 tn?1225706428 Transfer was postponed till I get better. Doctor gave me Lasix 40 mg to be taken once and Neo-K (potassium chloride) 500 mg twice daily for 5 days for now. My concern is that I ate two potatoes, one banana, a cup of yogurt, and tomato, all potassium sources today.

1916673 tn?1420233270 s fluids are created for them, so they correct any particular failing electrolyte or mineral imbalance, while at the same time offering hydration. Disorders of sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and phosphorus are commonly encountered in renal failure and can be life threatening. Basically the problems that require IV fluids are not only to do with hydration, but also the electrolyte balance and acidosis and the fluids used are based on any predicted problems and lab results.
Avatar n tn Potassium and Calcium and important electrolytes in muscles. Potassium is one of those electrolytes you dont really want to be messed up in your body. High potassium levels can cause heart dysrrhythmias, since your heart is a big muscle, Other signs of hyperkalemia(increased potassium) are nausea vomitting, restlessness, irritability, I am looking in my book right now to make sure i can give you the most accurate information. Chloride there is not much on.
Avatar f tn If I need salt and potassium, then I go for v8. If I just need salt, I get cheap ramen - it has a very high salt content or bouillon cubes. Sometimes the salt gets me out of more trouble than my other meds so I keep a lot of that stuff around.

Avatar m tn I could lay in the bed all week, feeling sick and general malaise (heavy arms and legs), take a few grams of potassium chloride and get up, and clean the whole house without even thinking about it. It is a difference of night an day. I have repeated this for countless times - every time I think I can do without salt supplementation, or I have to do it for medical research, I quickly become bedridden for the whole day.
