Hi Susan. Where I work we are gearing up for the usual flu season. We have a lot of buildings with lots of people so it's in out interest to suggest and promote the use of vaccine as a reasonable precaution. Although it's not expected to be a 'heavy' season we are seeing that the southern hemisphere (winter now) evidence that it will likley be a more normal year. One of the vaccines available is a 'live' virus that is not recommened for some people.

If pneumonia, is this a new pneumonia, a pneumonia condition caused by the flu virus itself, or standard pneumonia(s)? If a standard pneumonia, will a pneumonia shot five years ago give any protection, and/or would one now give any protection? Also, will Tamiflu from 2004 still work?

We were advised to give her a flu shot and pneumonia vaccines. It is most likely the pneumonia vaccine that is causing the pain and the lump. She had a SEVERE reaction to the vaccine. Ashelen- Only the flu mist has a live (weakened virus). The shot has a dead virus, just like any other vaccine. That's why I have to get the shot, and not the mist (I have a heart condition). I am getting a flu shot. It is important to get one during pregnancy. I am not sure what you mean by you are trying to find one that isn't a live virus? As far as I know... the vaccine has to be a live virus for it to be a vaccine. I haven't heard of one that isn't... maybe your doctor knows more.

Consensus is that the flu shot itself (not the nasal mist version) does not harm anything because it is not a live virus. Oddly, my GP gave me every vaccination he could think of when I was diagnosed including live virus ones. I didn't know at the time that was potentially risky, but suffered no ill effects. Some MS treatments can lower immune response but Copaxone isn't one of those. Sounds like a coincidence with the colds.
