Common Questions and Answers about Pneumonia symptoms in elderly

pneumonia

Avatar f tn I have a horrible cough. So 5 days ago I went to the Urgent Care and Dr said probably pneumonia. She gave me antibiotics, prednisone, and albuterol. It has been 5 days. The fevers are just higher. They dont even get better with ibuprofen. I can't function. I have small kids. I feel to sick to drive to the doctor. I need help. My cough is a lot better, my chest doesnt hurt as bad but these fevers are killing me. Any ideas? I've never felt so terrible.
Avatar m tn t perfect...but I DO have a problem with the idea that the elderly are purposely overmedicated in LTC facilities as a way for them to "behave" and be compliant so that they require less care. And, just btw, OSHA has nothing to do with these kinds of regulations whatsoever. Ive observed state surverys...they leave no stone unturned. If something is documented...it better have been done...or the facility ends up with whopping citations, which is the last thing they want.
Avatar f tn She had congestive heart failure with fluid retention in arma and legs and both lungs. She had pneumonia, rsv and mersa in her kidneys and lungs. She was malnurioushed and the diabetes was acting up. She ended up with a thorancentesis on her right lung which removed 2 ltrs of fluid. Now we are on day 23 and she is in ltac. Still has chest tube and is on high levels of oxygen, iv meds. She had a thoracentesis on the right lung again 1/2 a week ago.
Avatar n tn Sounds like a possible case of the flu. If the symptoms last over a week or if the patient has asthma, they need to see a doctor. If they have astham, the sooner the better. An asthmatic should also be using their rescue inhaler exactly as prescribed (number of doses at the shortest time interval) to prevent/minimize a flare. Also, if the are elderly or have otherwise compromised health they need to see a doctor. You need to agressively work to prevent dehydration.
Avatar m tn I looked up the name for you and the genetic drug is Levofloxacin and I am sure you will find it a lot cheaper and can get it in the mail by a canadian pharmacy wich you can also lookup the name in google.com good luck and get well soon.
Avatar n tn I have been to many many doctors and they either tell me I have a breathing problem and give me a breathing treatment and send me home. I am now with pneumonia and not able to go to work, i work in an assisted living place with many elderly clients and I am not willing to give them anything that they do not need. Please help me. I am tired of going to so many doctors to be sent home. Thank you.
Avatar n tn It was repaired two days later. She suffered aspiration pneumonia and a UTI fungal infection in the hospital. She was finally transferred to a rehabiliation center after being in the hospital for 4 weeks. In the rehab center, they told us she now has MRSA pneumonia. What are her chances of overcoming all of this? She is on a trach and at times seems very coherent. How much longer do we let her endure all of this? She never says she's in pain or uncomfortable.
Avatar n tn He is very fragile, has frequent trips to the hospital for pneumonia (currently at home but trying to recover from this third pneumonia in two years. Had terrible reactions to mouth problems, no appetite for several months, therefore, lost substantial weight. His weight is now down again (137lbs at 5' 9" height) and normal weight from three years ago was 155lbs.) He was first dx with prostate cancer 10 years ago and had surgery to remove it.
Avatar m tn I asked my doctor if I could get the pneumonia shot this year since I struggled so much last year with my second bout of Pneumonia. He said I should only get the shot if I am 65 years old or diabetic. I do not want to struggle this year like I did last year. Am I too young? Am I not eligible? Is it a health risk for me to get this shot?
Avatar f tn I have seen first hand how this can kill an elderly person within weeks. Thats how my mom died. Is mom in the hospital?
Avatar f tn If pneumonia, is this a new pneumonia, a pneumonia condition caused by the flu virus itself, or standard pneumonia(s)? If a standard pneumonia, will a pneumonia shot five years ago give any protection, and/or would one now give any protection? Also, will Tamiflu from 2004 still work?

649848 tn?1534633700 I'm sorry to hear about your mother's pneumonia; that's not good for elderly people (said like I'm not elderly...lol). I hope the party well and your mother didn't mind going back to the joint, too much. :-) I know what you mean about those tenths of a pound. I do the same thing only mine often isn't tenths of a pound - I think I've lost and gained the same 5 pounds at least 10 times over the past 5 yrs.
Avatar f tn opinions and above all else symptoms. I though have researched COPD in depth. It is the 4th leading cause of death. It is suppose to eventually become the 3rd leading cause of death. My advice to those just being told by some doctor that they have COPD is this.....get the testing done to confirm the diagnosis and get a second opinion as well.
Avatar f tn But it is usually a result of some other kinda bug thats not treated resulting in that it causes fluid on the lungs, which takes a while to turn into pneumonia. If you arnt having symptoms of the original chest cold, or flu your fine.
Avatar m tn I have FAP in my family and have dealt with many "blockages" and this is not the typical symptoms of a blockage, impaction maybe. Diarrhea for 3 days is not a big thing to be concerned with except for staying hydrated. However, with your dad not wanting to see a doctor and probably hasn't in many years there's not much you can do. You need to convince him that if he doesn't go now his body will force him to go eventually and it may be too late.
Avatar n tn Two weekends ago I woke up with the usual backache associated with pneumonia. I get it twice a year, so on Monday I called my doctor and went in. I was not seen by the doctor but was given prescriptions for the pneumonia and an order to get x-rays done. On Thursday I got the call that the x-rays did not show pneumonia and to stop taking the medication. On Friday I was worse so I went to the ER. That's where they told me I dislocated my ribs from coughing due to the pneumonia.....
1000946 tn?1253807847 If you conducted pulmonary tests on all the elderly, would you find that the majority showed some signs of COPD? In those cases would it simply be a sign of aging? We know that peak flow declines with age. Isn't this, in itself, an indication?
242516 tn?1368223905 The flu has passed epidemic rates in much of the country, and if you don't have a cold, I'm sure you have a friend who has the sniffles, fever, chills, aches and pains of a viral upper respiratory infection. This is different from a bacterial infection such as sinusitis, bronchitis, or pneumonia. A viral infection doesn't improve with antibiotics as these infections do. A virus hijacks your own body's healthy cells and uses it to reproduce and spread.
Avatar m tn When your cd4 falls below 200. You wouldn't have PCP within 45 days of infection.
Avatar f tn How are you now? There are symptoms of aspiration pneumonia but they normally last longer than a short bit. https://www.healthline.com/health/aspiration-pneumonia#treatment. Please let us know how you are doing now.
