Common Questions and Answers about Pneumonia recovery elderly

pneumonia

Avatar n tn Pneumonia due to methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection of the lungs can be life-threatening, especially in the elderly, but recovery is possible, especially if your mother has never smoked and heretofore, had healthy lungs. Assuming that she is receiving intravenous antibiotics, either at the rehab center or the hospital, whether she is to recover or not should soon be evident by clearing or worsening of pneumonia.
Avatar f tn I had the same situation before but just a pneumonia bilateral not covid pneumonia. Are you feeling fine now? Based on my research on pneumonia, the person having it usually recovers for about 6 months. That is totally normal coz you're still on process of healing your lungs and our body is recovering from the illness due to pneumonia. Until now I am having the urge of taking deep breaths and still working on it until my breathing is normal.
Avatar m tn A month long chest infection has developed into Pneumonia. After earlier courses of Amoxicillin, then Zithromax, upon determining Pneumonia I have been prescribed Levaquin, a much stronger antibiotic; But the Levaquin costs $ 264, which I can not afford. Is there a comparable antibiotic I can take that is more reasonably priced?
Avatar n tn I have been to many many doctors and they either tell me I have a breathing problem and give me a breathing treatment and send me home. I am now with pneumonia and not able to go to work, i work in an assisted living place with many elderly clients and I am not willing to give them anything that they do not need. Please help me. I am tired of going to so many doctors to be sent home. Thank you.
Avatar n tn He is very fragile, has frequent trips to the hospital for pneumonia (currently at home but trying to recover from this third pneumonia in two years. Had terrible reactions to mouth problems, no appetite for several months, therefore, lost substantial weight. His weight is now down again (137lbs at 5' 9" height) and normal weight from three years ago was 155lbs.) He was first dx with prostate cancer 10 years ago and had surgery to remove it.
Avatar f tn then quick onset of death usually only occurs in infants or elderly - or in people who have a weakened immune system. Pneumonia caused by bacteria is more angers than pneumonia caused by a virus, but oftentimes a virus can pave the way foe the bacteria to thrive. However, a bacterial pneumonia usually comes with a fever. There was a famous man named Jim Hensen (who created the Muppets) who died from a bacterial pneumonia.
Avatar m tn I asked my doctor if I could get the pneumonia shot this year since I struggled so much last year with my second bout of Pneumonia. He said I should only get the shot if I am 65 years old or diabetic. I do not want to struggle this year like I did last year. Am I too young? Am I not eligible? Is it a health risk for me to get this shot?
Avatar f tn my mom has walking pneumonia and she is 86. they are giving her steroids, but she is still having trouble breathing. what is the likleyhood at her age that she will pull through? also i am helping her out at home- will flowers, detergents, etc. make it worse? any advise you have would help.
Avatar m tn In regards to people with elderly family members who suffered a stroke, did they have feeding tubes or sources of nutrition provided? I am really struggling with this and feel like it is giving up. She is conscious and aware.
Avatar f tn I have a horrible cough. So 5 days ago I went to the Urgent Care and Dr said probably pneumonia. She gave me antibiotics, prednisone, and albuterol. It has been 5 days. The fevers are just higher. They dont even get better with ibuprofen. I can't function. I have small kids. I feel to sick to drive to the doctor. I need help. My cough is a lot better, my chest doesnt hurt as bad but these fevers are killing me. Any ideas? I've never felt so terrible.
Avatar m tn He has a small patch of pneumonia on the lung uncured for about three months now, and he has been on and off Levaquin. The cardiologist saw this and told me that he thinks my father has months to live. He feels mental cloudiness and inability to walk are confirmation that the heart has become too weak to support normal function. The doctor holds out hope that if we can treat the pneumonia and any electrolyte imbalances that we might get him to snap out of this.
Avatar n tn An asthmatic should also be using their rescue inhaler exactly as prescribed (number of doses at the shortest time interval) to prevent/minimize a flare. Also, if the are elderly or have otherwise compromised health they need to see a doctor. You need to agressively work to prevent dehydration. Depending on other medications she may be on, guaifenesen (generic Mucinex) would be a good idea. I hope that helps you some. I pray that your mother is feeling better soon.
Avatar f tn If pneumonia, is this a new pneumonia, a pneumonia condition caused by the flu virus itself, or standard pneumonia(s)? If a standard pneumonia, will a pneumonia shot five years ago give any protection, and/or would one now give any protection? Also, will Tamiflu from 2004 still work?

Avatar m tn Elderly people suffering from conditions like dementia are often pumped full of powerful meds unfortunately it turns out, these drugs can actually increase the risk of potentially deadly pneumonia. Researchers looked at data on nearly 2,000 seniors -- 258 with pneumonia, and 1,686 without -- they found that the patients on antipsychotic meds were twice as likely to get sick.
Avatar n tn In general, the sooner a person can safely get up and moving around, the better--Helps maintain strength, prevent pneumonia, helps get the bowels moving regularly, improves circulation, etc. Good luck!
611067 tn?1458591483 I received a phone call this morning that my father was taken to the ER having had a mild heartache on top of having severe pneumonia and congestive heart failure! He is being admitted to the ICU. We live in Utah and he's in PA. My stepmother will call me when she knows more! My heart is breaking!!! There had been a fallen out in our family with my stepmother a few years ago and just recently I made amends with her.
Avatar n tn In older adults with already existing medical problems, a severe illness such as MRSA pneumonia can leave permanent damage. If swelling of the brain occurred, I am not entirely clear what the exact meaning of that was, but one question to try and clarify is: was there suspected anoxic injury to the brain, meaning that there is evidence, either historically or by imaging (such as CT scan or MRI of the brain) that there was a time period when the brain did not receive enough blood.
Avatar n tn To determine if pneumonia is still present, direct clinical examination is important together with diagnostic tests. Pneumonia caused by a virus infection usually resolve after couple of days and recovery may also be affected by various factors including the medical history of the patient. If it persists, it is best that you have this checked by your doctor. Take care and regards.
Avatar f tn A few months ago, my mother was diagnosed with pneumonia. After a round of antibiotics and breathing treatments, she was pronounced well. Since being cured of the pneumonia, she developed diverticultis. This was quite a surprise. Mom is very healthy -- she is 70 and takes care of everyone else. She is very diligent about eating yogurt and taking her probiotics, often scolding others to do the same, especially while on antibiotics.
Avatar n tn Dear Doctor, I am a 36 year old asthmatic woman and I take 250 seretide evohaler 2 puffs twice daily. I got pneumonia 2 months ago (end of August) and I still feel tired, no energy. Do you think I would be strong enough for the swine flu (H1N1) vaccine, or should I wait until I have made a full recovery? Thanks.
Avatar n tn Will a patient see significant improvement on their PFT test after taking medication for a period of time. This was my orginal PFT test three weeks after having pneumonia and the second set of tests were performed two months afterwards. Do most people with COPD see this much of an improvement on their later PFT results or is there a possibility that maybe what I have is more asthma seen COPD? These were the results of my first test FVC ref 3.51 pre 2.74 78% post 3.
1733547 tn?1310332865 I am looking for ANY advise on helping my heart recover from congestive heart failure. It was brought on by a severe infection (believed to be a pneumonia infection). I was put into an induced coma for 9 days while the infection ran it's course and I'm thankful to God for bringing me back to life (my wife was told more than once to prepare for my leaving this world). My recovery has been miraculous - I broke every time line laid before me.
