Common Questions and Answers about Pneumonia in ventilated patients

pneumonia

Avatar n tn Many chemical sealant have large disclaimers about the potency of noxious fumes, especially in under-ventilated areas. I would be worried primarily about caustic chemical inflammation to upper & lower airways, which in severe cases can progress to respiratory distress and/or failure. If the patient is of advanced age with known or potential cardiac risk factors, it would be doubly important to rule out any potential for acute coronary syndrome that might result from such stress exposure.

Avatar m tn Mortality from influenza is increased in patients with cirrhosis. Therefore, these patients should receive annual injections of influenza vaccine. During flu season cirrhotics are part of the high risk groups that are given priority for obtaining the vaccine. As far as other levels of liver disease or treatment, there is no standard recommending all of these vaccinations. Obviously they can't hurt. As you will never have to worry about becoming infected with these viruses. Cheers!

Since the surgery which is now 9 months ago has never had a day without abdominal pain sometime so severe he can't move and is unable to get out of bed for days. Avatar n tn I was working in a poorly ventilated classroom in file cabinet. The product was "Write off" and it had spilled out of the bottle in the back of the top drawer. I was working in the second drawer. After putting together a make-up packet for a student that was absent for the past 3 months, with copies of the chapters, worksheets, assignments, and tests and quizzes, I went to my desk to check my e-mails and I got a dizzy spell that lasted about 5 sec., it went away.
Avatar f tn I was told it doesn't matter as long as the area is ventilated and you're not getting dizzy or nauseous from the fumes. I'm just letting my roots grow out since they are close in color. Just to be safe.
Avatar n tn with double pneumonia and had to be ventilated for 11 of the days as his breathing was so bad and he could not lay down past a 45 degree angle. Since coming home from hospital, he still has to be at about a 10degree angle. He has had a multitude of test and his heart is fine. His oxygen levels in his blood are fine. They have no clue. We would like an answer, even if it is bad, just so we have something to deal with.
Avatar f tn My baby has been diagnosed with pneumonia, a week ago. She still acts as if she is in pain, and has short rapid breaths. She is on Zeniquin, and a pain med. She was originally in an oxygen kennel for 2 days, and was pretty good when we brought her home. Now it seems like she gets these bouts of gasping for air, her gums are still pink. I am startin to think her vets arent sure what is wrong with her.
Avatar n tn Husband had headache with 103 fever off and on (mostly on) for more than a week. Finally, on the third time to the ER, they admitted him, diagnosing with pneumonia. He's been at the hospital for a week now, and although fever and headache gone, after CT scan and a couple other procedures, they just told him that his pneumonia hasn't gone away. The doctor said he's going to try different treatment, and tomorrow get a lung biopsy.
Avatar n tn What is happening is the pneumonia is exacerbating the diabetes. Once you get the pneumonia under controll her glucose levels should start leveling out again along with all her other vitals....She needs to go see Dr. and get put on a round of antibiotics....depending on how serious the pneumonia is, she may have to go on IV antibiotics, but that would be the doctors call, hopefully shes not that far off.
Avatar n tn t a specific diagnosis of what caused the pneumonia. Most pneumonia is infectious, and is most times caused by strep bacteria, so they throw antibiotics at it, and see how the patient responds, there are more aggressive atypical bacterial pneumonia that may require more aggressive treatment, also a persons age, and strength of their immune system is a major factor as well. But there are also viral, fungal, or less commonly parasitic causes of pneumonia.

Avatar n tn After much hesitation and thought I am going to provide you with specific advice. Of course you should consult your physicians, who will undoubtedly disagree with me. You are entirely correct in viewing the mucus as the problem. The organism causing the trouble (Let's call it"Harvey") is living the good life in what is called a "biofilm". Harvey can exist in a Lugols solution (which kills every known bacteria)in one of these films.

Avatar n tn It was repaired two days later. She suffered aspiration pneumonia and a UTI fungal infection in the hospital. She was finally transferred to a rehabiliation center after being in the hospital for 4 weeks. In the rehab center, they told us she now has MRSA pneumonia. What are her chances of overcoming all of this? She is on a trach and at times seems very coherent. How much longer do we let her endure all of this? She never says she's in pain or uncomfortable.
Avatar m tn These complications can include dehydration, ear or sinus infections, and bacterial or viral pneumonia, which can fill the air sacs in the lungs with pus or fluid, making it difficult to breathe and depriving older patients of adequate oxygen. In some cases, pneumonia may be asymptomatic, but it is still contagious if it results from a bacterial or viral infection.

Avatar m tn This is a common occurrence in heart failure patients. It is possible, however, that the confusion could be caused by electrolyte disturbances and by some renal failure ( you didn't mention that but should check for it). The metolazone can also worsen heart function when it removes too much fluid from the vasculature too fast thereby not filling the heart properly leading to decreased output. That could cause confusion, especially in the setting of electrolyte imbalance.

Avatar f tn I have had bronchitis 3 times, pneumonia once, and a sinus infection once...in the past 3 months. I feel confused alot. My blood test show highly elevated white blood cells. First it was my lymphocytes, then it was my neutraphils, then it was my lymphocytes. Then my WBC dropped to a normal level, but my neutrophils were really low.
